Isla Mujeres (Spanish for Island of Women) is an island in the Mexican Caribbean Sea, located eight miles off of the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, near Cancun Mexico. Isla Mujeres was a Mayan sanctuary to goddess Ixchel for about a thousand years. In around 1850 the first modern inhabitants moved to the island and established the village of Dolores. The island is part of the Isla Mujeres Municipality in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico and includes an impoverished colonia on the mainland.
Transportation on the island of Isla Mujeres consists primarily of taxis or golf carts and moped scooters. There is also a bus service that runs from the downtown to the different neighborhoods, called colonias in Spanish (where most locals live). The island is about 7km (4.3 mi) in length. The north end sees the most tourist action with the main town area (which is extremely compact and walkable) and the ferry while the south end is host to mostly private homes and guest houses. Many locals live in the central part of the island. Taxis from the ferry terminal will take you anywhere in town for 30 pesos, but for multiple excursions to the south end of the island, the best option is to rent a scooter or golf cart.
Hidalgo Street is full of restaurants catering to the tourist crowd and tends to be the most lively and also the priciest, while the central portion of the island is where the locals tend to eat and has slightly lower prices. Beach restaurants are also plentiful, with options near the ferry terminal being more lively while those on Playa Norte and other beaches featuring a more relaxed atmosphere.
Isla Mujeres generally has a quieter and more relaxing vibe than what you'll find across the bay in Cancún, and there's just enough here to keep you entertained: scuba diving and snorkeling, visiting a turtle farm or simply swimming and lazing around on the island's gorgeous north shore.
Sure, there are quite a few ticky-tacky tourist shops, but folks still get around by golf cart and the crushed-coral beaches are undeniably lovely. As for the calm turquoise water of Isla Mujeres, well, you really just have to see it for yourself. Come sunset, there are plenty of dining options, and the nightlife scene moves at a carefree pace. Some people plan their vacation around Cancún and pencil in Isla Mujeres as a side trip, but the island is truly a destination in its own right, and a surprisingly affordable one at that.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of devotees of the Virgin of Guadalupe crowded the streets and main avenues of Mexico City to arrive for the feast day celebration that takes place each year on December 12.
They came from all across Mexico: some spend days walking from their home towns to comply with pledges to complete a pilgrimage or simply to thank the Virgin.
Pilgrim Jacobo Corona journeyed over 130 kilometres (80 miles) from his home in La Trinidad, Tlaxcala, with a group on bicycles.
They have done the same trip to Mexico City for the last 30 years.
We came here to thank God and the Mother (the Virgin of Guadalupe) so that she takes care of us and gives all of us, all the pilgrims and all our family, who come here year by year, more strength to keep going, said Corona during a brief stop before arriving at his final destination.
They also come on foot and in vehicles to celebrate the date that is celebrated as the Virgin of Guadalupe's birthday.
Sleeping where they can and eating as they walk, people carry framed images, towels and pottery depicting the Virgin.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared to Indian peasant Juan Diego on the Hill of Tepeyac in December 1531.
Thousands of faithful make the pilgrimage for the occasion each year.

Isla Mujeres - Festival of The Virgin 03
[Much of the following is same as description for last video. Only the second paragraph is different/new.]
The Festival of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception on Isla Mujeres started tonight with Mass, the Procession of the Virgin around town, fireworks, and entertainment in the town sguare.
This video is of the final leg of the Procession, as the Virgin arrives back at the town sguare and is taken into the church to await tomorrow's festivities.
The festivities continue until 8 December, with activities every day in various neighborhoods around the island, sponsored by various businesses and organizations.
The last day, after some of the young children celebrate their first Mass at 10:00 am, the Virgin goes for a boat ride around the island. Anybody with a boat can join the waterborne procession. Then they bring the Virgin back to church and put her in her proper place until next year.

On November 28th after the 7:00 p.m. mass, the Virgin was removed from her niche in the church, as she is every year, and carried through the streets of Isla Mujeres. This is known as the bajada, literally ´the lowering´. Sometimes, up to two or three thousand participants attend the opening event.
