Guandu Bridge - New Taipei City, Taiwan
The Guandu Bridge sat straddling across the Tamsui River
and make a good traffic among Tamsui, Bali, Guandu,
Beitou, etc. The bright, red arch looks like a rainbow
across the sky. Visitors may enjoy the Riverside Walk
or Bike Riding along the path and see beautiful scenery.

The Natural Symphony of Guandu in Taipei City
The main section at Guandu Nature Park is the main area for preserving the areas natural resources. There is a core reserve area with displays for eco education. And another area behind me here is the so-called heart wetlands. This section functions just like a humans kidney does, acting to decontaminate the wetlands.
When you walk out of the park and onto the bicycle path in the Mangrove Reservation Area, Taiwans natural beauty is only a short distance away.

{Hiking} Taiwan Travel -- Mt. Guanyin (觀音山)
Mt. Guanyin is the mountain you can see from the town of Tamsui on the other side of Tamsui River. It's a steep climb over hundreds of stone steps, but from the peak you have awesome views.

From Travel in Taiwan (2016, 3/4)
By Richard Saunders
Mt. Guanyin is one of the scenic highlights you’ll see on the way to the port town of Tamsui from central Taipei. Situated on the opposite side of the Tamsui River, the mountain resembles Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, lying down. There are numerous trails on the mountain, ranging in difficulty from easy but steep to steep and challenging. The views from the peaks are magnificent, and there is also a very special tiny temple in a narrow cave to be explored.
That fine profile is one of the main reasons why Mt. Guanyin is such a popular hiking spot in the Taipei area. There are several ways to the top of the highest of its various summits, known as Yinghan (“Tough Man”) Peak because the Japanese military used the trail for fitness training during the 1895~1945 Japanese occupation period. The most popular route is the relatively easy one from the southwest, beginning at Lingyun Zen Temple, which sits in a beautiful spot, backed by the sheer cliff face of an outlying peak. Below lies the much smaller Lingyun Temple, a pretty and very photogenic place of worship.
After arriving at Lingyun Temple bus stop, walk uphill, following the signs, to the Lingyun Zen Temple complex. After exploring the temple and enjoying the magnificent view, walk past the front of the main prayer hall and through the temple grounds and car park, to reach the adjoining road. The signposted, stepped trail that leaves the road here, on the right, is the path to Mt. Guanyin’s highest summit.
Winding up the wooded hillside, the first section of the climb is quite steep, so proceed slowly. Turn right at a “T” junction reached after about half an hour. From here the gradient becomes a bit more gradual as the trail gains the main ridgeline and follows its rolling curves, and there are views at intervals through the trees over the Taipei Basin and ahead to Yinghan Peak.
After about 20 minutes of hiking from the “T” junction, you come upon a trail crossroads just below the summit. Turn right up the stone steps and walk for a couple of minutes to reach the main Mt. Guanyin summit (616m). The view from the peak is tremendous, and you can see Yangmingshan on the opposite site, the whole of Taipei City laid out far in the distance to the right, and Tamsui and the mouth of the Tamsui River to the left.
To descend the mountain, you have several choices. One is to retrace your steps to the crossroads just below the summit, and then to follow the stepped trail on the right, which descends the eastern side of the mountain. After meeting a narrow lane after about 30 minutes walking, turn left and follow the lane downhill through a cemetery and orange orchards until you reach the highway (No. 15) that follows the west bank of the Tamsui River.
Cross the busy highway with care, and walk to the bicycle path that runs parallel and right beside the river. Turn left and follow the path (north) for about 20 minutes, to the Bali Ferry Pier. For a fare of just NT$23 (get your ticket at the ticket booth behind the pier before joining the queue, or swipe your EasyCard before boarding the ferry), you can take the little ferry across the river to Tamsui. There are services every 15 minutes or so. Don’t forget to look back at the towering bulk of Mt. Guanyin while crossing the river, or, even better, spend an hour or two exploring the promenade at Bali Left Bank before boarding the ferry in time to see the famous Tamsui sunset (weather permitting), which looks especially great from the deck of the boat. The ferry docks right in the heart of old Tamsui, 10 minutes from MRT Tamsui Station.

Guanyinshan (觀音山) & Bali (八里), Wugu, Taiwan, 03/13/2011
Guanyinshan is on the west bank of the Danshui River, with the main mountain chain between Wugu and Bali Districts in New Taipei City. It is a young extinct cone-shaped volcano, part of the Datun mountain group. Its north slope is mainly lava while the south is mainly debris flow deposit. Viewed from Danshui and Guandu areas, the mountain looks like Guanyin Buddha lying on her back, hence the name.
Guanyinshan is the home of many species of raptor and is also visited by many migratory birds of prey.

Guandu Temple
Dating back to 1661, Guandu temple—the oldest Matzu temple in Taipei is built right into the side of a mountain.
For many visitors, Guandu is a perfect example of the mixed role that most Taiwanese temple play: house of worship, art house, carnival venue and street food market.
The walls, pillars, and the stone lions were carved according to many historical stories. The legends of Mazu the residents spread add more mystique to the Guandu Temple.
S: Are they worshipping Mazu?
M: Yes, one of the legends about Mazu happened in 1895. One day, three old banyan trees standing at the temple's entrance died suddenly; local people believed that this might have been a message from Matzu warning of impending disaster and sure enough, the area was soon occupied by the foreign intruders.
S: Wow, that’s cool! Mazu is so efficacious!!
M: yeah, that’s why we believe in Mazu for such a long time.
S:咦? what’s that on the rooftop?
M:Oh, that’s jiannian!
S: What is jiannian?
M: jiannian is a kind of decorative arts, which is popular in Minnan and Hakka’s traditional arts and crafts.
S: Hmm…There seems to be an abundant culture here in Guandu Temple.
M: Yes, come here in Chinese New Year, and you’ll find more about Taiwanese’s traditional culture.
Guandu Nature Park
After visiting the Guandu Temple, there is another attraction waiting for you. Here is the Guandu Nature Park.
This park is a major stopover site for migrating birds, especially waterfowl and shorebirds. Besides, it is an important wintering and breeding ground for many species. 229 species of birds have been observed qualifying this wetland as an Important Bird Area (IBA)
This is the visitor center. There is an indoor observational area on the second floor. You may observe the birds by the spotting scopes here and enjoy the panoramic view of the Guandu plains cape.
In Guandu Nature Park, two buffaloes are selected as conservation partners. The older sister's name is Nougat (牛軋糖) and the younger sister's name is Caramel (牛奶糖). They are so cute and attract many visitors to treasure the value of wetland in Guandu.
Once a year in Autumn, Taipei International Birdwatching Fair is held here to share with people. If you visit Guandu in October, you may have chance to join this activity.
What are you waiting for?
Pack your luggage and book some appointment, you’ll realize the pleasure of traveling in Guandu.

10. Kaohsiung Lotus Pond
Also called Lotus Lake, it is a man-made pond and a popular destination in Kaohsiung. It is known for its lotus plants and also for the temples around the lake. Among those temples, we can highlight the Dragon and Tiger pagodas (you can enter inside them), and the Confucius Temple.
09. Fo Guang Shan Temple
Among all the Buddhist temples in Taiwan, this one is the largest, and certainly one of the most impressive (if not the most). Located in Kaohsiung, this huge place is the HQ for the Fo Guang Shan, an order that calls itself as the International Buddhist Progress Society. If a giant golden Buddha isn’t enough to make your mind, there are eight pagodas, pavilions, halls, gardens, museums and much more. Actually, I would need an entire post just to talk about this amazing place
08. Chimei Museum
The Chimei Museum is a private property open to the public. Its art collection is divided into western art, musical instruments, natural history, military artifacts, and antiquities.
07. Taijiang National Park
An ecological paradise in Taiwan, the Taijiang National Park is on the migration route for Asian birds. Every autumn and winter thousands of birds can be seen there.
06. Alishan Sunrise
The best way to see this amazing sunrise is to get the train to the top of the mountain, in the early morning. The train is usually crowded, but it is a short trail to the top.
05. Sun Moon Lake
You will find yourself in a pleasant city surrounding this beautiful lake. It’s almost mandatory you rent a good bike (and a good one, please!) and give a ride around this huge lake. Don’t worry. If your concern is where to find a place to rent your bike, the city has plenty of options. You have to check the conditions of the bike before you rent it, though. There are good prices everywhere, but sometimes the savings do not pay for your comfort and safety. The bike path is well maintained, with tons of places to eat, to take pictures, to relax, and to enjoy.
04. Beitou Hot Springs
Beitou, with its wooden houses and old stone bridges, is a charming city. It is only 30 minutes from Taipei and is a top place in Taiwan to visit. It is famous for its spas and hotsprings.
03. National Palace Museum
With 700,000 pieces of artifacts and artworks, the National Palace Museum, in Taipei, is one of the largest of its type in the world. The collection holds over 10,000 years of Chinese history from the Neolithic age to the late Qing Dynasty.
02. Elephant Mountain
People traveling to the island should see the Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world and a top place in Taiwan. It is beautiful indeed, and you may want to visit its interior, but don’t miss the view from outside. It can be even prettier. That’s why we recommend going to the Elephant Mountain. Not only an amazing place to visit, the top of the Elephant Mountain is also perfect to get one of the best views of the city and its tallest building.
01. Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall
The National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is a national monument, erected in memory of Chiang Kai-Shek. Right of the entrance, you will notice how wide the place is, with the National Concert Hall on your left, the National Theater on your right, and the Memorial Hall in the middle, at the end of the square. The entrance to the square is something impressive too.
