Jinshan Gong, a shrine in the rock. Jiufen, Taiwan | 20181024
I took a solo trip to Jiufen in northern Taiwan. It's a beautiful tourist town built on the mountainside. This shrine, Jinshan Gong, was built along an old mining road in the community. Originally a carved bas relief of the Bodhisattva Guanyin and her assistants on a rocky outcrop, it was later enlarged and more altars were added. The shrine dates to the reign of Japanese emperor Taisho (1912-1926), from a time when Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945). Jiufen's old street now runs through the current shrine's worship space.
TAIWAN - BUDDHIST MONASTERY STAY - GIGANTIC DRAGONS - TALL TOWERS - ROBIN NOWACKI'S TRAVELS
ROBIN NOWACKI DISCOVERS MONKS, MOUNTAINS, AND A GIGANTIC DRAGON! – IN TAIWAN................Known throughout the world for its “Made in Taiwan” trade mark this Far East island state now hopes to lure travellers by offering a delightful sub-tropical fusion of friendly people mixed with a fascinating cultural heritage and fabulous food.
Essentially Taiwan is pure China – the government of the Republic of China deposed by the communist takeover on the Chinese mainland came to this offshore island in 1949 – creating an alternative capitalist state - and as a result the few million people who fled here at the time escaped the influences of Chairman Mao Zedong’s “Cultural Revolution”.
MONKS AND VEGETARIAN MEALS
My Taiwanese experience was to include fine hotels, wonderful dining, and lively cocktail bars, but first I was to purify both body and soul by entering into a spiritual world at the Fo Guang Shan Monastery.
I had been given the opportunity to spend the best part of 24 hours here, joining the Buddhist monks and nuns at dawn for lessons and then sharing with them a vegetarian breakfast eaten in total silence.
Upon entering the monastery one leaves behind many of the pleasures we enjoy - alcohol, meat, fish, coffee, tea, and even milk, to name but a few.
As a guest I could wear my normal casual clothes, but had to dress modestly covering arms and legs. The shaven headed monks and nuns wear long woven brown robes with light beige leggings and thick woven boots – for them not even leather sandals are allowed.
By day and during the vegetarian dinner in the evening the monks and nuns were quite outgoing and communicative, and the meal of noodle dishes and hotpots, Fo Guang Shan style, was quite unique and in some cases delicious.
Just before dawn however as the chants of the monks and nuns drifted from temples and dormitories it is the time for silence and serious prayer.
Along with a handful of other guests I made my way to the main shrine dominated by three magnificent 20 foot high bronze Buddha on the altar with an incredible 14,000 more little Buddha each illuminated in the high walls.
In this candle lit and incense smoked atmospheric setting it was quite moving to listen to the devout prayers and chants punctuated at times by the deep boom from a huge ceremonial drum.
No one could question the devotion of the monks and nuns to their god, etched as it was on all their faces during the ceremony, and shortly afterwards as they sat in long rows in total silence at the breakfast of steamed bread, spinach like leaves, and watered down soya milk.
A new day had dawned and I had experienced something I stall never forget!
The Fo Guang Shan Monastery is situated in the far south of Taiwan near the second city of Kaohsiung. Most guests make a donation towards their stay (fgs.org.tw).............
TAIPEI
One feature of Taiwanese cities are clean safe streets, and genuinely friendly people who are usually happy to talk to you and help without any thought of reward. This also applies to Taipei, the modern capital.
Here broad shopping boulevards featuring most of the world’s top brand names are to be found, however two attractions unique to the city stand out.
The National Palace Museum houses a very large part of China’s entire artistic heritage brought to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland by the troops of the Republic of China in 1949.
Guaranteed appeal to the erudite the exceptional collection of ancient paintings, scrolls, porcelain, and statues here, give a fascinating insight into just how advanced Chinese culture was – even thousands of years ago. npm.gov.tw
By contrast the other Taipei attraction is definitely of the modern age, and until 2010 it was the world’s tallest building.
The Taipei 101 Tower is still in a very respectable second place with 101 stories and reaching an overall height of 509.2 metres or 1,671 feet. Its elevator is capable of ascending an incredible 1010 metres in just one minute.

Amazing Taiwanese Buddhist Temple Tour 台灣佛教寺廟
A tour of an incredibly beautiful buddhist temple I found in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
台灣佛教寺廟
Buddhism is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs, and practices largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as the Buddha (meaning the awakened one in Sanskrit and Pāli). The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end ignorance (avidyā), craving (taṇhā), and suffering (dukkha) of dependent origination, realize sunyata, and attain Nirvana.
Two major branches of Buddhism are recognized: Theravada (The School of the Elders) and Mahayana (The Great Vehicle). Theravada has a widespread following in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Mahayana is found throughout East Asia and includes the traditions of Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Shingon, Tiantai (Tendai) and Shinnyo-en. In some classifications, Vajrayana—practiced mainly in Tibet and Mongolia, and adjacent parts of China and Russia—is recognized as a third branch, while others classify it as a part of Mahayana. There are other categorisations of these three Vehicles or Yanas.
While Buddhism remains most popular within Asia, both branches are now found throughout the world. Estimates of Buddhists worldwide vary significantly depending on the way Buddhist adherence is defined. Lower estimates are between 350--500 million.
Buddhist schools vary on the exact nature of the path to liberation, the importance and canonicity of various teachings and scriptures, and especially their respective practices. Two of the most important teachings are dependent origination and sunyata. The foundations of Buddhist tradition and practice are the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma (the teachings), and the Sangha (the community). Taking refuge in the triple gem has traditionally been a declaration and commitment to being on the Buddhist path and in general distinguishes a Buddhist from a non-Buddhist. Other practices may include following ethical precepts, support of the monastic community, renouncing conventional living and becoming a monastic, the development of mindfulness and practice of meditation, cultivation of higher wisdom and discernment, study of scriptures, devotional practices, ceremonies, and in the Mahayana tradition, invocation of buddhas and bodhisattvas.

Dharma Drum Mountain
Founded by Master Sheng Yen, the Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education is a unique sanctuary nestled among mountains and streams that was opened on October 21, 2005. The scenery, pathways, and corridors have an understated grace and the landscape architecture creates a serene atmosphere. The center exudes an elegance that is seldom seen in Buddhist architecture.
