In Taiwan jitong are people who go into trance and are thought to be possessed by the gods. To validate that they are truly possessed by the gods many jitong flagellate themselves at temples and ritual processions. This footage is of several jitong as they make their way from temple to temple in a religious procession. This footage was filmed by Marc L. Moskowitz.

Parade of Taiwanese Deities
Taiwanese are very religious. Or you can say superstitious. You bump into temples everywhere. In the past, I got accustomed to such kind of parades and sometimes even found them boisterous and disturbing. But on that sunny spring afternoon, as I heard the thundering drums and gongs from my room, my curiosity was piqued. I rushed out of my apartment to join them, realizing that the religious rituals and all the vanishing traditions were fascinating and charming. They distinguish Taiwan and make this tiny place interesting. For example, the Tongji (乩童), a possessed shaman, in trance, walked into firecrakers fearlessly, out woundless. The gigantic colorful local deities marched, dancing with the entrancing music. They protected the main deities sitting inside the palanquins.
During childhood, a temple fair would attract most residents in the neighborhood. Then performances of Taiwanese opera or puppet shows would be staged in front of a temple for several days. It was difficult to find a seat. Nowadays there're performances, but there's no audience. Sadly they perform only for the gods.
Perhaps the world inside the tiny screens has already grabbed most people's attention.
Thus I would like to record them for people experiencing most things from the screens. Then next time, probably they would pay attention as they see, would like to walk out, participating in what's happening right now.
And we might think about the significance of culture. What are we losing, progressing to the time of fast progress and huge development?

Confessions of a Tangki (Taoist Medium)
People view taoist mediums with both fear and reverence. Taoist rituals involving underworld gods can be shocking for the modern folks whose idea of religious practices are peaceful and subdued.
When the deities take over the medium's body, they usually converse in ancient dialect and can appear to be rather hostile in their mannerism. In Chinese mythology, Hei Bai Wu Chang 黑白無常 are two deities who dress in black and white respectively and in charge of escorting the spirits of the dead to the ruler of Underworld. Depending on the person it encounters, the Hei Bai Wu chang can appear as either a benevolent deity who rewards the person for doing good deeds or a malevolent deity who punishes the person for committing evil. Locally, they are also referred to as Tua Li Ya Pek or Dua Di Ah Pek, which means Big and Second Brother.
Ken (not his real name) talks openly about how being a tangki has affected his relationships and how he tried to reject the calling but there was simply no escaping heaven's will.
