Guilin, China 桂林 中国
Guilin 桂林 is a prefecture-level city in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of far southern China, sitting on the west bank of the Li River. Its name means forest of Sweet Osmanthus, owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city. The city is famous for its unique scenery.
'East or west, Guilin landscape is best!' Located in the northeast of Guangxi Zhuang in south China, Guilin is considered to be the pearl of China's tourist industry. The natural beauty and historic treasures is well known. The city is rather compact when compared with other major tourist cities in the country. The stunning landscape in which the city is situated has a kind of magic that is all its own. The strangely shaped hills or karsts, with the verdant vegetation ranging from bamboos to conifers together with crystal clear waters and wonderful caves make the city such an appealing destination. It is also an important cultural city with a history of more than 2,000 years.
桂林山水甲天下 - Guilin's scenery is best among all under heaven.
China Tours - Guilin, China
Guilin is celebrated for its picturesque limestone mountains and the meandering Li River.
An ancient Chinese saying describes the landscape in Guilin as the best scenery under heaven.
Its misty peaks rise as suddenly from the earth as trees in a forest, they surround the city like mountains floating in an imaginary sea.
With China Spree you are never far from the action, so your beautiful hotel is located in the heart of the city on a riverside avenue of the sweet-scented trees and walkway that overlooks the Li River. It's a great place for relaxation and meditation.
This part of the country encompasses China's most famous scenic landscapes.
While in Guilin we travel to Long Sheng for an off-the-beaten-path hiking tour of the spectacular Dragon Spine Rice Terraces.
Over the centuries, the drong and Yao minorities have sculpted 2,000 foot high peaks with remarkable step-like terraces. They use the terraces for growing rice. This transformation over time has created landscapes of utility as well as immense beauty.
In Spring, when the terraces are full of water, they resemble irregular silver ladders; and in autumn, when the rice ripens, the mountains turn into golden waves.
Visit the unique culture of local minorities and their villages where life has remained unchanged for thousands of years. We are able to hike between the villages following tiny stone paths carved out by the local people. This memorable journey is rarely included in the conventional itinerary.
A beautiful day waits! After breakfast, you take a scenic ride through the countryside, passing lush green fields and rice paddies, to reach the Bamboo River pier, where you embark on a memorable cruise down the picturesque Li River. The 40-mile trip has countless twists and turns and the scenery is reminiscent of classical Chinese landscapes—bamboo groves, sleepy villages, fishermen on bamboo rafts, cormorants, water buffalo, soaring karst pinnacles and mist shrouded peaks... your cruise concludes at Yangshuo, a rural town, amidst a haunting and surreal setting.
Time permitting you will have free time to explore this fascinating town on your own, followed by a tour on tuk-tuk to visit local farmers' fields and homes. Yangshuo's landscape of limestone hills, rice fields and lazy rivers is the very image of rural China, and ride on a tuk-tuk through this much-painted landscape provides a great way to experience the dramatic countryside, ancient villages and bustling local markets in a very intimate way.
Traveling back to Guilin in the late afternoon, en route, we will make photo stop to shoot signature sceneries of the countryside
If time permits, you will tour the Reed Flute Cave, nature's subterranean wonder filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Its name comes from the verdant reeds growing outside that are used to make flutes. The grand chamber known as the Crystal Palace, is an awesome spectacle.

Reed Flute Cave known as the Palace of Natural Arts is located in the northwest of Guilin City , 5 kilometers away from the center of the city.
According to a legend, Reed Flute Cave got its name because people believed that the reed by the cave's mouth could be made into flutes. The length of the Reed Flute Cave is 240 meters and offers a majestic fairyland of karst caves with landscape and rural scenery. It is a magic fairyland of stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, birds, plants and animals in fantastic shapes and colors, all glistening in colorful lights.

Li River, Guilin, Yangshuo, Guangxi, China, Asia
The Li River or Li Jiang is a river in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. It flows 83 kilometres (52 mi) from Guilin to Yangshuo, where the karst mountains and river sights highlight the famous Li River cruise. The Li River originates in the Mao'er Mountains in Xing'an County and flows in the general southern direction through Guilin, Yangshuo and Pingle. In Pingle the Li River merges with the Lipu River and the Gongcheng River and continues south as the Gui River, which falls into the Xi Jiang, the western tributary of the Pearl River, in Wuzhou. Tourist rafting boats cruises from Xingping on the Li River. The upper course of the River Li is connected by the ancient Lingqu Canal with the Xiang River, which flows north into the Yangtze; this in the past made the Li and Gui Rivers part of a highly important waterway connecting the Yangtze Valley with the Pearl River Delta. The 437-kilometre (272 mi) course of the Li and Gui Rivers is flanked by green hills. Cormorant fishing is often associated with the Lijiang (see bird intelligence).
Tourist boat cruises from Guilin to Yangshuo are famous, attracting millions of visitors a year. The Li River and tributaries drain the area from Guilin to Yangshuo, descending from 141 m at Guilin to 103 m at Yangshuo. Mean flow past Guilin is 215 cubic metre per second, and alluvium sediments consisting of well sorted gravels covered by silty sand, form floodplains and terraces along its route. Yet, it is the 2,600 m of Devonian and Carboniferous limestones and karst terrain within the Guilin Basin, that gives the area a dramatic landscape. Two distinctive types of karst are found, Fengcong, and Fenglin, which have evolved for the past 10-20 million years, within the Cenozoic. Fengcong karst dominates the course of the Li River and is defined as a group of limestone hills with a common limestone base, with deep depressions or dolines between the peaks, and sometime described as peak cluster depression karst. Hundreds of caves are present in this terrain, with 23 having passages longer than 1 km alongside the Li River gorge. The longest is the Guanyan Cave System that extends from Caoping to Nanxu. Fenglin dominates the area around Yangshuo and south of Guilin and is defined as isolated limestone hills separated by a flat limestone surface generally covered by loose sediments, and sometimes described as a peak forest plain. The best known fenglin is the tower karst around Yangshuo. These towers consist of strong and massive limestone forming near vertical sides with base diameters less than 1.5 times their height. Heights of the towers range from 30 to 80 m in the central basin, but can be as high as 300 m near the Fengcong. In fact, Fenglin evolves from Fengcong by slow and continuous tectonic uplift, associated with the Himalayan orogenic zone, and even slower erosion of the towers. Famous Show caves in the Guilin area include Qixing Dong and Luti Dong.

Amazing Places to Visit in China - Guilin
Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. For a country of its massive size and varied geography, however, it's surprising how relatively few people outside China appreciate the extent of the country's other attractions, many of them natural wonders to rival any in the world.
Guilin is a scenic town and one of the best-known tourist destinations in China. The riverside town in southern China is most famous for its karst hills and traditional fishing-village lifestyle. Guilin is China's most picturesque region and has long been one of the world's most famous travel destinations. It's breathtaking scenery has attracted many famous poets and artists for thousands of years. Guilin, Wade-Giles romanization Kuei-lin, also spelled Kweilin, formerly Lingui, city, northeastern Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi, southern China. The natural route centre of the Gui River basin, Guilin lies along the easiest of all the routes leading from central China to Guangdong province.

What to eat in Yangshuo (Guilin) CHINA
Yangshuo (Guilin) is a popular tourist destination for both local Chinese and foreigners these days. But besides from the scenic sights there are also some incredible regional foods which shouldn't be missed, plus some for the more adventurous souls too!
Google is blocked in China so for all our China videos, we'll do our best to provide restaurant names and addresses, but these will often have Chinese in them too so if you have the Chinese apps like Dianping for food recommendations you'll be able to enter them in and use DiDi-Rider (Uber equivalent in China) to get to the locations.
First up we try some authentic dishes from a local Guilin restaurant for breakfast. Oily tea cereal? Rice in a bamboo shoot? These were some of the unique regional Guilin dishes that were completely new to us which we were excited to try.
Restaurant name: 恭城油茶小吃店
Pinyin pronunciation: Gōng chéng yóuchá xiǎochī diàn
Address: 广西壮族自治区-桂林市-叠彩区-复兴里3号
Next up we tried some Guilin rice noodles (Guilin mi fen) thanks to a local recommendation from our Airbnb host. Guilin mifen is an absolute must try dish when you're in Guilin, China.
Restaurant name: 桂林米粉
Pinyin pronunciation: Guìlín mǐfěn
Address: 广西壮族自治区-桂林市-阳朔县-阳朔镇滨江路25号滨江花园酒店旁
To try scorpions and many other different types of regional street foods head over to West Street which is a popular tourist street in Yangshuo, Guilin. There are many food court areas all serving similar delicacies at West Street, Yangshuo. Beware though! The smaller scorpion species can apparently be more venomous than the big ones so only eat them if you dare ????
While in West Street Yangshuo, Guilin you can also go to the restaurant where we ate the fisherman cakes and pork belly with yams from. They're also well known for their beer fish too.
Restaurant name: 漁夫啤酒鱼 (西街店)
Pinyin pronunciation: Yúfū píjiǔ yú (Xī jiē diàn)
Address: 广西壮族自治区-桂林市-阳朔县-益田西街118号(星巴克附近)
Finally we've saved the best for last a massive 2kg fish cooked with beer. To have perhaps the most famous dish of Yangshuo (Guilin) BEER FISH! Beer fish is definitely one of those must-try dishes when you're in Yangshuo, China.
Restaurant name: 厨先生
Pinyin pronunciation: Chú xiānshēng
NB: Unfortunately this restaurant has since changed into a BBQ skewers shop, but don't worry, beer fish is so popular it's easy to find all around Yangshuo.
