EP8 Seeing Taiwan: King's Garden Villa Guanziling hot spring, 原味山產美食 and 桶仔雞 barrel roast chicken
關子嶺溫泉 Guanziling is a hot springs town in the district of Baihe (which translates to white river). The hot springs water here is slightly chalky due to the mineral deposits. It's not the easiest place to get to so we hired a driver at the Shangri La (TW$1,500 = £40 for the 1hr trip from Tainan to Guanziling).
The drive through the mountains was beautiful and our driver was able to tell us a lot about the area (his contact details below). There are plenty of resorts in Guanziling but King's Garden had a more boutique feel to it. The rooms, resort grounds and spa are all kept really well with lots of small details making it feel more cosy.
Each room/villa in the resort has it's own private hot spring which is pretty much 2 stone baths with hot spring taps. It was great to make use of our private spring while the main one was so busy. The cost of the room includes 1 night stay (with private spring), single access to the main spa, single access to the nude spa (we gave that a miss) and breakfast.
The main spa area has strict rules on swim wear and everyone must wear swim caps (otherwise refused entry). We stayed on a Sunday night so the main spa was packed with people during the day but it is open until 10pm so we went in around 8pm and most day guests had left so we almost had the whole place to ourselves!
The facilities at the spa are insane! They have everything you can think of and more. Not captured on the video was the steam and sauna rooms, lounging areas, feet warming/massage chairs and the Jacuzzi beds in the pool.
A short walk from the hotel is the main street which has some shops and restaurants. The must try dish is 桶仔雞 (barrel roast chicken) and pretty much every restaurant in the area either specializes in it or sells it. Slow cooking the chicken in the barrel is meant to keep it moist (it wasn't).

Guanziling Water and Fire Cave hot spring 關仔嶺的水火同源

FIRE hot springs! What other reason do you need to visit this place? Hopefully that should be enough, because there is not much else to see besides a natural gas fire and a hot spring. It's name Chinese literally means water and fire coming from the same source (水火同源). Some have called it one of the seven wonders of Taiwan. This is a place that we have wanted to go for a long time, and the first place that we have checked off of our “secret places” list.
The Fire and Water Hot Spring and Cave was supposedly discovered by a Fujianese monk from a nearby monetary on the mountain in Baihe. After the Japanese Colonial Period ended in Taiwan, the local people created a shrine here and placed a God atop the spring called “不動明王” “unmoving king.” The natural gas for the fire is supplied from the Liuchong River Fault that runs underneath the ground here. In 1964 there was an earthquake that apparently split the fire apart, whereas before the fire all came from one hole. Nowadays this place is a tourist destination that from which locals can cash in on by selling various snacks and merchandise.
Getting here:
We came south on National Highway 3 from Jiayi and exited near Tainan Baihe district. If you do not have a vehicle, Water and Fire hot spring can also be reached via Xinying Bus (新營客運) or tour bus.

There is also a poolside café for guests to take a break and hydrate with a cool drink.

白河水庫，是位於台灣台南市白河區的一座人工水庫，建造於1965年，是攔截急水溪上游之白水溪溪水而成。水庫潭面面積約170公頃，有效蓄水量1068萬立方公尺。
白河水庫是一座具備灌溉、防洪、給水等用途的多功能水庫，可提供台南市白河區、東山區及一部分後壁區的農田灌溉所需，並供應台灣紙業公司新營紙廠的工業用水，以及台灣自來水公司白河營運所的民生用水。位於西拉雅國家風景區範圍內，被納為「關子嶺遊憩系統」的一部分，臨近有關子嶺溫泉、鹿寮水庫、白河大仙寺、六重溪溫泉等景點，由於水庫內淤沙嚴重，削弱了灌溉與防洪功能，因此嘉南農田水利會在枯水期採取「水力抽泥」與「陸上開挖」兩種方式以減緩淤沙累積速度。
Baihe Reservoir is an artificial reservoir located in Baihe District, Tainan City, Taiwan. It was built in 1965 to intercept the water of Baishui Creek upstream of Jishui Creek. The reservoir pond area is about 170 hectares, and the effective water storage capacity is 10.68 million cubic meters.
Baihe Reservoir is a multi-purpose reservoir with irrigation, flood control, water supply and other uses. It can provide irrigation for farmland in Baihe District, Dongshan District and part of the back wall area in Tainan City. It also supplies industrial water for the Taiwan Paper Company Xinying Paper Mill. And the water for people ’s livelihood at the Taiwan River Water Company ’s Shirakawa operation. Located in the area of Silaya National Scenic Area, it is considered as a part of the Guanziling Recreation System, and is close to attractions such as GuaZiling Hot Spring, LuLiao Reservoir, Baihe Daxian Temple, Liuzhongxi Hot Spring. The irrigation and flood control functions have been weakened. Therefore, in the dry season, Jianan Farmland Water Conservancy will adopt two methods of hydraulic pumping mud and land excavation to slow down the rate of sediment accumulation.

(1)これまでの沿革とこれからの将来構想
私は昭和22年4月生活保護法により余部村授産所を開設。生活要保護を対象に就労の場を
運営して来ました。
別紙の通り、老人ホーム、障がい者、生活保護施設等15種類の施設を開設し、
現況約1,000名の人々の生活の支援を行っていて、現在に至っております。
又、平成4年10月、それらの施設を運営する中、障がい者自らが経営する「就労の場」を
設置することを考案し、私の過去における世界の古代文明と近代文明の足跡を見学した実績を
纏め、太陽公園と名付けて施設を建設、運営も開始。その効果は障がい者の方々の喜びと
希望は絶大なるものであり、少資本ではありますが、自らの資本投資による経営と地位の確保、
年齢に関係なく就労期間の維持、高額の賃金を獲得等、生活上において安心と安全の満喫、
これが福祉施設だろうかと疑う位の満足度を障害をもつ方々に味わって頂きたいと願っております。
更に太陽公園の施設運営の効果を高め、より多くの障がい者の就労場の拡大のため、平成21年4月
ドイツのノイシュバンシュタイン城と同型の白鳥城を竣工させました。
この白鳥城こそは障害をもつ人々の就労の場であり、障害をもつ人々のシンボルとなり、
日本中の障害をもつ人々が相集まり、生きる力の源となり、障害をもつ人の希望であり、夢であり、
現実でもあります。
尚且、今回世界の国々のご支援を得て、国際的なFestivalを挙行し、その上世界民族衣装の
博覧会も併設、世界は一つと言えるような夢。行事を展開させて頂き、日本中の御理解ある皆様にご協力を得、
障がい者と生活に困窮している人々の就労を支援しようと実現しつつあります。そして、彼等が一日も早く
社会復帰される事を念じて、尚且、太陽公園が益々発展して行くことを願って居ります。

(4K) 白河水火同源 Fire and Water Spring
水火同源，又名水火洞、水火河，是一處水與火共存的自然景色，位於台灣台南市白河關子嶺風景區，枕頭山麓西南側，六重溪斷層附近上脊斜軸部上的石壁。壁上冒出的天然氣可使點燃的火焰不熄滅，同時又有泉水從崖壁細縫中潺潺流出，火噴其間，無煙亦無燄，形成水中有火，火中有水的特別景觀。
自康熙四十年(1701年)被白河大仙寺的參徹禪師發現後，火勢一直維持至今。1964年白河地震前一直是集中一束，火勢旺盛；地震之後，火焰分散自幾個孔隙冒出，火勢較弱，猶如水面浮花。台灣日治時期，鄉民刻一尊名為水火神君或稱不動神君的神像在出火處之上，以供膜拜。
