Sao Paulo Travel Guide - The Charm of Brazil
Sao Paulo Travel Guide - The Charm of Brazil
São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, with a city population of about 12 million and almost 22 million in its metropolitan region. It is the capital of the Southeastern state of São Paulo, and also a beehive of activity that offers a jovial nightlife and an intense cultural experience. São Paulo is one of the richest cities in the southern hemisphere, though inequality between the classes typically observed in Brazil is blatant. Historically attractive to immigrants as well as (somewhat later) Brazilians from other states, it's one of the most diverse cities in the world.
Just south of the city lies the Parque Estadual Serra do Mar (part of the Atlantic Forest South-East Reserves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a mountain range covered by exhuberant rainforest that faces the coast and provides various ecotourism options. Following São Paulo's extraordinary growth during the 20th century, most of the old city buildings have given way to contemporary architecture. This means that most historical buildings are concentrated downtown, where 17th-century churches stand in the shadows of skyscrapers. The best of São Paulo's gastronomy, nightlife, and museums are concentrated in the historic downtown and neighboring areas to the west. Consequently, this is where most visitors to the city tend to stay. Those who are adventurous enough to venture beyond these areas may discover a completely different São Paulo, including areas of preserved natural beauty, affluent suburban neighborhoods, as well as more dangerous and impoverished districts.
Downtown
The birthplace of the city, with many historical areas, cultural centers, and a universe of diverse people rushing to work or to school.
West
Home to the government of the state of São Paulo, it is probably the most vibrant area of the city for business, science, gastronomy, nightlife and culture.
South Central
The wealthiest region of the city contains Parque do Ibirapuera, one of the most important recreational and cultural areas of São Paulo, and inumerous shopping malls.
Southeast
Home to hundreds of thousands of immigrants who settled in the city, that is where Museu do Ipiranga, the São Paulo Zoo and other attractions are located.
Northeast
The Northeast is São Paulo's event arena, where the annual Carnival and and many other large scale events take place. Part of the magnificent Parque da Cantareira is also here.
Far South
The largest region of São Paulo is still have some parts covered by forest, farms and water, and can offer many unique experiences to a visitor.
Far East
São Paulo's City of Workers contains two of the most beautiful parks of the city, and was the host of the FIFA 2014 World Cup in the city.
Northwest
The Northwest is a more suburban area which is home to Parque Estadual do Jaraguá, where the highest point of the city is located.
The Bilhete Único is a transport smartcard that is used for paying fares on buses, subways, and trains. In essence, a single billing of the card grants a person up to four trips in São Paulo's public transportation system with free transfers between the subway system and buses within 3 hours.

Jardim da Luz, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Jardim da Luz is a small park in the city of São Paulo. The park is near the Luz station, and the Pinacoteca, a museum which holds shows of modern and contemporary art, near the Historic City Hall. Originally created in 1798 as a botanical garden, the garden was transformed into a public park only in 1938, initially serving partly as a big pasture for cattle and horses.
In 1900 it was inaugurated as the headquarters of Museaum of the Artes for São Paulo, a building that nowadays holds the aforesaid Pinacoteca.
During a big part of the 20th century, Jardim da Luz passed by a severe period of degradation, serving as a zone of prostitution and drug trafficking. The situation reverted itself with the revitalization of the central region led by the state government. The results were, among others, the installation of sculptures in the park, the reform of the Pinacoteca do Estado, and better police supervision of the area.
Nowadays, on the first Sunday of each month, car collectors, bike enthusiasts, and every type of wheeled vehicle restoration buff, brings there works of rolling art to the Jardim da Luz to show-off their restoration work.

Thunderstoms on GOL Boeing 737-800 São Paulo Congonhas to Brasilia & IATA Aviation Day Brazil
Today’s flight is São Paulo Congonhas to Juscelino Kubitschek airport in Brasilia BSB on PR-GUB, a Boeing 737-800 delivered to GOL in 2010 that flies also with Transavia in the Netherlands on the high season.
Congonhas is the third busiest airport in Brazil, after São Paulo Guarulhos and Brasilia
The airport is located in the middle of urban areas. There is a small but nice lounge.
Congonhas used to be the main airport in São Paulo. In the past, there were flights to domestic destinations in Brazil and to other countries as well. That was until 1985, with the opening of São Paulo Guarulhos airport. Nowadays, CGH is a very congested airport, serving domestic destinations. It is especially popular for the CGH-SDU (Santos Dumont in Rio de Janeiro) shuttle, or ponte aérea.
This plane still had GOL’s old livery.
This is a 1 hour 20 min long flight and they served a snack and water (the other drinks were not complimentary, coffee included). Actually, I prefer to pay less, as I did, and have almost no frills.
There were some heavy storms ahead and we could see some cumulonimbus clouds. We had to fly around the storm.
This was the first time that I visited Brasilia. The reason of this trip is to attend the IATA Aviation Day Brazil, a one-day conference where there were many aspects about the airline business in Brazil being discussed.
The last panel included the Presidents/CEOs of the four main airlines in Brazil:
Claudia Sender (LATAM), Frederico Pedreira (Avianca Brasil), Antonoaldo Neves (Azul) and Paulo Kakinoff (GOL).
The discussion was very interesting. The main complaints were about high costs due to bureaucracy, fuel costs, airport fees, strict
regulations, compensations and taxes.
As they all agreed, should those costs be reduced, the market would grow much bigger.
Other complaints, especially by Mr. Neves (Azul) included the poor infrastructure in some airports that prevents them from flying there (i.e. due to a lack of a functioning fire engine).
At BSB there is still at least one Boeing 767-200 parked that belonged to the defunct Transbrasil, that ceased operations in 2001. The airline used to be the third largest in Brazil, after VARIG and VASP.
BSB is an impressive airport, it actually looks like a crystal palace. This hub has flights to all big cities in Brazil and also to neighboring countries, the US and Europe.
Brasilia was built in the middle of nothing to become the capital of Brazil. The plano piloto is an airplane-shaped city. Many constructions have been designed by the infamous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, among others the cathedral.
Unfortunately the day before there were some demonstrations. Many monuments were painted and some buildings invaded by demonstrators. Due to that, the buildings and museums that I wanted to visit were all closed to the public.
In the video you will also see the Esplanada dos Ministerios and the Congresso Nacional.
On the radio they were talking about the crash of the plane with the Chapecoense football team that happened a few days before my trip.
