Refugio del Quetzal - In search of the Quetzal - GuateGuides
Find more information at:
The Quetzal is Guatemala's national bird. Nowadays this bird is hard to find because people hunted this beautiful animal for it's feathers. And today it's in danger of extinction.
In just a few places in Guatemala you have a chance to see this magnificent bird. One of the places where you have a big chance is the Refugio del Quetzal in the department of San Marcos. (Not to be confused with the Biotopo del Quetzal in the department of Baja Verapaz on the road to Cobán!) The Refuge is part of a beautiful cloud-forest that lies on the foot of the Tajumulco volcano.
During the mating- and nesting season from December till May, Quetzals can be seen almost every day. February, March and April are the most spectacular because the Quetzals are always close to their nests and easy to be seen.
We offer excursions from Quetzaltenango to the Refuge for 1 or 2 days. We recommend doing a two days excursion because in this way it's almost impossible to not see the Quetzal.
We use the service of a local guide to locate the birds. Quetzals are very habitual and the guides know exactly when and where to look for the bird. Also they recognize every sound the Quetzal makes. There are at least 5 different sounds, and the guides can recognize from just the sound if it´s from a male or female.
When you stay for the night we sleep and eat with a local family near the refuge. Accommodations are basic and shared between the group, but there´s a hot water shower. If you would like to stay in a hotel this is possible for a surcharge. Camping inside the refugio is also possible. Contact us for more information.

About Quetzaltrekkers Guatemala
We are the only all non-profit, all volunteer-run trekking and outdoors association in Guatemala.
Quetzaltrekkers was founded in 1995 as a means of self-sustainable, grassroots fundraising for the functioning of Associación Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC), with the overall aim of combating the unfortunate reality of children living and working on the streets of Quetzaltenango. Our job is to see that tourism dollars directly benefit those Guatemalans that need them most: namely, street children and children at risk of becoming street children. We do this by running tourist-oriented, guided-treks through the beautiful Guatemalan highlands: hence the slogan, ’Hike and Help’.
Join us on one of our awesome hikes!

Guatemala Tours Video
Guatemala Tours Video - Mysterious and often challenging, Central Americas most diverse country offers landscapes and experiences that have been captivating travelers for centuries.
Colonial Grandeur
Say what you like about the Spanish in Latin America, you have to agree that they left behind some stunning architecture. From Antiguas crumbling ruins to the stately cathedral in Guatemala Citys central plaza, there are plenty of opportunities to get snap-happy. In even the smallest towns you can find picturesque buildings -- the small coastal town of Retalhuleu has a charming central plaza, while larger coffee-boom towns like Cobán and Quetzaltenango maintain vestiges of their glory days in their cathedrals, town halls and other public buildings.
The Timeless Maya
While many ask whatever happened to the Maya, the simple answer is nothing -- theyre still here, and some traditions continue to thrive. If youre interested in archaeology, the must-see sites are Tikal, Copán (in Honduras), and Guatemala Citys superb selection of museums.
Living Maya culture can be witnessed in its pure form in towns like Rabinal and sacred sites such as Laguna Chicabal. And the Maya themselves? Well, theyre everywhere. But the most traditional villages are in the highlands -- the Ixil Triangle is a good place to start.

Quetzaltenango (Xela) to Lake Atitlan with Quetzaltrekkers, Guatemala 2018
Three Day Hike from Quetzaltenango (Xela) to Lake Atitlan with Quetzaltrekkers, Guatemala 2018
What to do in Xela in 1 day? What to see in Xela if you are limited with time and budget?
Some of us have very limited time to travel, and I understand that. Therefore, although I spent in Xela (Quetzaltenango) 6 full days, I am sharing my recommendations with those of you, who do not have that much time. What would I do in Xela if I only had 1 day? Well, it depends... On what kind of experience you are looking for.
If you are a good hiker and you would like to see one of the three active volcanoes in Guatemala, then I would recommend to you a climb up Santa Maria volcano (with the height of 3,772 m, which is 12,375 ft). Like this, you will be able to see the Santiaguito volcano. It is a strenuous hike, constantly 3 hours up, and that if you are quite fit. It can take up to 5 or even 6 hours, from what I have heard! Some recommendations here: leave as early as possible! Because it clouds up after 10-11am and then you might not be able to see absolutely anything from up top.
The tours normally cost 275 quetzales, but it is easy to do it by yourself with the public transport. For more details on how to organize it by yourself, you can follow the video below:
And if you are not sure if you are fit enough to climb that volcano, you can see the type of hike under this link:
If you see, that the Santa Maria climb wouldn't be for you, since it is too high and too exhausting to get there, you can go to the Chicabal Lagoon. It is a lake that is up on a volcano on a height of 2,712 meters (8,879 feet).
But you cannot really feel you are on top of a volcano. But it is interesting to see how the locals are doing their offerings on the lake. It is a bit of a hike, but definitely not as difficult as the one to Santa Maria. And also, the whole concept on being on a lake that is in a crater of a volcano, is quite cool.
Here, again, the same advice: go as early as possible, cause it fogs up quite quickly - like around 10-11am. It is possible and easy to get to Laguna Chicabal on your own, in DIY style. And pay way less than for an official tour. You can find the details in the video under this link:
If you are not a keen hiker, and you would like to relax a bit, you can go to the thermal baths of Fuentes Georginas, which are natural hot baths close to Zunil, to which you can also get from Xela with the public transport.
In the evening I relly recommend the Indian Restaurant, el Sabor de India. I know, i know... I would normally not do this type of recommendation. But the food is absolutely extraordinary!
If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below. I am always very happy to answer any of your doubts. Cause I want you to have a fabulous time, even if you are very limited time in Guatemala!
More videos to come. If you need any particular content - please let me know. It would be great to create something that is useful for you!
Quetzaltenango Tours Video
Quetzaltenango Tours Video - Quetzaltenango may well be the perfect Guatemalan town -- not too big, not too small, enough foreigners to support a good range of hotels and restaurants, but not so many that it loses its national flavor. The Guatemalan layering effect is at work in the city center -- once the Spanish moved out, the Germans moved in and their architecture gives the zone a somber, even Gothic, feel.
Quetzaltenango is big, like its name -- which the locals kindly shorten to Xela (shell-ah), itself an abbreviation of the original Quiché Maya name, Xelajú -- but by Guatemalan standards, it is an orderly, clean and safe city. It tends to attract a more serious type of traveler -- people who really want to learn Spanish and then stay around and get involved in the myriad volunteer projects on offer.
Xela also functions as a base for a range of spectacular hikes through the surrounding countryside -- the ascent to the summit of Volcán Tajumulco (Central Americas highest point) and the three-day trek to Lago de Atitlán, to name a few.
