Barisal backwater and biggest floating market trip|Floating Market Bangladesh
Barisal is one of the 7 administrative divisions of Bangladesh. Located in the south center part of the country Barisal is called the land of Dhan-Nodi-Khal (Rice, River and canals). Barisal division is criss-crossed by numerous rivers and canals. Recently we visited the backwater of Barisal and a seasonal guava floating market around 20 miles from the city. We took a tooktook and reached Jagadishpur then ride a Trowlar (Local Engine boat). The Trwaler started to run through the narrow canals and after 2 hours reached to Vimruli, the biggest Guava garden of Bangladesh. After whole day passing in backwater, we returned Barisal city in the morning.

Explore Beautiful Bangladesh: Floating Guava Market of Pirojpur
Among some of the most fascinating things in the Southwestern region of Bangladesh is the beautiful floating guava market of Swarupkathi of Pirojpur. And all of this started 125 years ago when one Purno Mondal from Nesarabad upazila brought back some guava seeds from Goya and planted them in his village home. The guava was a culinary hit with the locality and its fame gradually spread across the country.
Today guava is cultivated in five unions of Swarupkathi (presently known as Nesarabad) across 640 hectares of land. Watch the beautiful video of the most famous guava orchards of the country.

The southern region of Bangladesh is famous for guavas, more popularly known in Bangladesh as ‘Bengal’s Apple’. Especially in Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila and at Swarupkathi and Banaripara Upazila in Pirozpur, farmers heavily rely on guava farming. Such diversity of life is hardly to be found in other places of the country. Loss in guava farming in one season usually leads to extreme distress for the farmers throughout the year. The current year is one of those.
The eye-soothing guava orchards on canals over Jhalakathi’s Sugandha, Bishkhali, Gabkhan and Sandhya River are Southern region’s main places of guava farming. Every day, thousands of tons of guavas are supplied all across the country. Boats are the main transportation for supplying. Farmers carry the guavas onto the boats from the river-adjacent orchards. There are hundreds of boats filled with guava and all the trades occur on boats.
The floating market appears as the center of Barisal’s (aka The Venice of Bengal) beauty. Nobody knows when the idea of this floating market began, but it’s a hundred-year old tradition. Development and modernization are taking over the country but it’s surprising to see them not reaching to this river-oriented life yet. For more than 100 years, the local farmers have been experiencing the ups and downs of life along with the ebb and flow of the river. Many farmers and wholesalers gather here every day. Not only guava, there are other fruits sold in this market.
Boat Market: Boat makers at the weekly “Noukar Haat” (boat market) in Kuriana (কুড়িয়ানা) under the Swarupkathi upazila of Pirojpur district are doing brisk business during this monsoon season. The two-kilometre-long marketplace is noted for the trade in different varieties of boats during the monsoon season. The market runs every Friday from May to November. “Panis” or “Pinis”, “Dingi” and “Naak Golui” are the types of boats available for sale, built by local craftsmen from the Muktahar, Chami, Boldia, Inderhaat, Boitha Kata, Dubi and Kathali villages.
How to go
After reaching at Barisal Rupatoli bus stand, take “Dhanshiri Paribahan” leaving for Khulna. Ask the bus supervisor to stop at Kirtipasha Mor in Jhalakathi. Bus fare would be 60 taka. From there, take shared Auto Rickshaw to reach Vimruli by paying 20-30 taka.

Travel to Barisal | Floating Market | Durga Shagor | Shondha River | Travel Bangladesh
It was an event by Eco Tourist Group a renowned travel group in Bangladesh. The admin Apu was a very old online friend of mine. I has no intention to travel Barisal at that time but hearing from Apu, I planned to travel with them.
It was a day of bad luck! I started from Gazipur & met other tour mates at Sadar Ghat Launch Terminal where a launch ticket was pre booked by out admin Apu.
We arrived at Barisal at around 4 am. First, we started journey to Shatola to see red lily. But, bad luck! There was not enough lily to impress us!
Then, went to Durga Sagar Dighi, this place was awesome. We all took a bath there. After that, We went to Floating Market & Guava Garden via Backwater. But, what a bad luck again! We missed that too because of delay.
At the end of the day we spend evening on Shondha river & the evening is beauty not describable.
At night, we visited Kherua Mosque, which was out of light at that time!!!
Bad Luck again!!!!!
Note: Time to go Floating Market via back water is early morning (before 10 am). Don't miss it like we did.

Canals and floating markets are no more a scene only from Thailand, Indonesia, Kashmir or Venice. Anyone visiting the southwestern part of Bangladesh will find that floating markets are also a part of the diversity of our country, reports UNB.

This village is about 15 kilometers away from the district town and its floating market is always crowded with buyers and sellers and different types of products are traded here. If one gets hungry, then no worries, floating food stalls are also there!
Throughout the year Bhimruli offers various products to buy. But the place gets more crowded in the season for guavas and hog plums.
Every day of the week from 12pm to 3pm the floating market of Bhimruli sets up in the estuary where three canals meet.
Like Bhimruli, similar floating markets are also in Khurana and Atghar while several floating markets can be found in Barisal. Another famous floating market is in Baithakata in Nazirpur Upazila of Pirojpur, which has been floating for 60 years. It starts at 8am and ends around 12pm.
Farmers along with hundreds of boats come to these markets to trade their freshly cultivated products like vegetable, rice, fruits and so on. Buyers also accumulate crowds here to buy fresh products.
So if one wants to have formalin-free vegetables and fruits, or simply want to enjoy the beauty of green floating market- Bhimruli is a must-visit place. It can also be the perfect tourist destination in the season as the fresh guavas are calling!
