Entry:
so, after a kind of rough week of people passing away in the hospital...i decided not to go to work today. instead i spent the day back in my old stomping grounds of mariscal! Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) is a world famous artist from Euador. this museum houses the most complete collection of his work. he was also a collector, so it also contains a lot of his collections. his collection of religious art includes a crucifix by the famous indigenous carver Caspicara and a tiny crucifix with a pendulum heart inside that ticks against the chest cavity when touched. this part of the museum was the scariest because they had a bunch of life size figures and i was sure that one of them was going to come to life...scary, scray, scary

We are here, first because we were invited by the (anti-war, anti-dictatorship) Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, second to celebrate their 32nd anniversary and thirdly, because their fight is the same, the fight of Guayasamin using shapes and colours to protest against war and violence in defence of human rights and peace in the world, is the same as the fight of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo.

15. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Pablo Guayasamin, son of the painter:
This is a message valid for the whole world. The seven women crying are from the Spanish Civil War but they could be mothers anywhere in the world. The other paintings showing mothers are a symbol of the home and the society. The five paintings behind me were painted when he went to Cuba and visited the places where Batista tortured the people who fought against his regime.

STORYLINE:
An exhibition of the work of Ecuador's most famous and respected artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin, has opened in Argentina.
The works are a dramatic reaction to fifty years of torture and oppression in South America and around the world, with the organisers choosing the notorious naval mechanics' school ESMA (Escuela de Mecanic de la Armadas) in the capital Buenos Aires as a location.
The complex was one of Argentina's biggest detention and torture centres during the Argentina military dictatorship where over 5-thousand political dissidents were detained and tortured between 1976 and 1983, with little more than a hundred survivors, according to the protest group Mothers of Plaza de Mayo.
The exhibition commemorates the founding of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, 32 years ago, and the 90th anniversary of Oswaldo Guayasamin's birth.
The artist's son Pablo presides over the Guayasamin Foundation in memory of one of the most important names in 20th century South American art.
His paintings, colourful, dramatic, sometimes brutal but tender at the same time, were made to injure, to scratch and to hit people's hearts, to show what the man is capable of doing to another man, according to his own words.
Guayasamin never joined any political party but his work reflects his anti-imperialist feelings, his obduracy against military dictatorships and his solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the indigenous people of Latin America.
The exhibition brings paintings from his second series called The age of rage and from the third, called While I live, I always remember you, a homage to his mother and all the mothers of the world.
The age of rage paintings, created between 1964 and 1984, reflect the cruelty of the Spanish civil war, the Nazi concentration camps, Hiroshima and Vietnam and the cruelty of dictatorships in Latin America, from Panama to Paraguay.
According to Pablo Guayasamin, his father had been working on a painted mural dedicated to the Mother of Plaza de Mayo when he died in 1999 and some of the sketches he made for the mural are on display at the exhibition.
