The Flåm Line (Norwegian: Flåmsbana) is a 20.2-kilometer (12.6 mi) long railway line between Myrdal and Flam in Aurland, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flamsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. The line's elevation difference is 863 meters (2,831 ft); it has ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 percent (1:18), making it the steepest standard
gauge railway in Europe. Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flam Line is now almost exclusively a tourist service and has become the third-most visited tourist attraction in Norway.
Construction of the line started in 1924, with the line opening in 1940. It allowed the district of Sogn access to Bergen and Oslo via the Bergen Line. Electric traction was taken into use in 1944; at first El 9 locomotives were used, and from 1982 El 11. Until 1991, the train connected with a ferry service from Flam to Gudvangen. In 1992, freight services were terminated, and due to low ticket prices and high operating costs, the line was nearly closed. In 1998, Flam Utvikling took over marketing and ticket sale for the line, prices were heavily increased and El 17 locomotives were introduced. The trains remain operated by the Norwegian State Railways (NSB), while the line itself is owned and operated by the Norwegian National Rail Administration.

Norway In A Nutshell
Norway in a Nutshell takes you on a journey through the country’s breathtaking fjords and snowy mountain peaks. Our adventure started in Bergen, where we boarded a train to Myrdal to meet the Flamsbana – one of the World’s steepest and most famous railways. After a night in the small hamlet of Flam we cruised the Sognefjord to Gudvangen for our bus to Voss, where we boarded our train back to Bergen. Our round trip was Norway at its finest, squeezed into just 48 hours (or two minutes here).

The scenery keeps getting more spectacular as we climb through the central regions of Norway, getting a little bit like Switzerland with tall mountains in the distance and glaciers, with lakes where the water is clear blue color.
We change trains mid-way at Myrdal and board the Flam railway which is one of the most scenic rides in Europe. It travels about four miles from the mountain tops down through seven lush valleys to the waters below in the Sognefjord, Norway’s largest fjord. There we catch a boat to Bergen through the Sognefjord. There's lots of great scenery during the boat ride, with the mountains towering high above on both sides of this chasm.

Roadtrip Norway 2015: Flambanen tour
Flambanen tour made in June 2015.
Tour started with a traintour from Myrdal (really cold there!) to Berekvam. From there we took the mountainbike down to Flam. In Flam the fjordsafari took us over de Aurlandsfjord en Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen.
Breathtaking Norwegian Fjords & the famous Flam railway!!
Easter weekend 2015.
From Bergen airport we checked in at the Radisson Blu Royal. We hired a Hertz car and drove from Bergen to Flam (or 'Flom') where we took the famous 'Flamsbana' to Myrdyl taking in some epic mountain scenes and cute snowy villages.
Then we drove the Hardargen Fjord (Hardangerfjord) to see amazing views and a Norwegian ski party in the snow!
I totally recommend visiting Norway! Beautiful and dramatic scenery across the Fjords.
Happy viewing!
