East Iceland - Hengifoss and Gufufoss waterfalls, Seyðisfjörður
Do you long for seeing the more remote parts of Iceland? The East fjords and surrounding highlands are certainly off the beaten track!
For info on East Iceland, visit:
The eastern part of Iceland is the part of the Icelandic Ring Road least travelled but is home to many natural wonders and rare natural beauty. Here we have a glimpse of Hengifoss, the third tallest waterfall in Iceland, the stunning high street in Seyðisfjörður village, a harbour nestled in the narrow fjord by the same name, where the ferry Norræna sets anchor and Gufufoss, a waterfall close to Seyðisfjörður.

Seydisfjordur Iceland
A place of singing waterfalls and peculiar characters, Seydisfjordur is a welcoming town booming with creativity and rich in history. Inhabited by about 700 people the town acts as one big family, and a friendly one at that. Everybody is welcome to our little paradise and we want to share the goodness with you.
The long, calm, deep fjord of Seydisfjordur twists and turns 17 kilometres from its mouth to the head of the fjord, where the town of the same name shelters beneath Mt. Strandartindur and Mt. Bjolfur.
In the valley above the town, the river Fjardara cascades from the edge of the heath above in innumerable beautiful waterfalls, down to Lon (the lagoon) at the head of the fjord. A road leads up from the fjord, along by the river, to the Herad district, 26 km away across Fjardarheidi heath. Once a hazardous place to travel, the heath is now crossed in a mere half-hour by a high-quality road, commanding splendid views of the surrounding area. The route (Stafirnir) down into Seydisfjordur by the Fjardara river is one of Iceland’s most spectacular roads.
Distance from Reykjavik: 679 km / 422 mi
Seydisfjordur, experience the flourishing art scene, try our guided tours and delightful hiking trails. Enjoy the local cuisine and the sensation of our unique town. Seydisfjordur is one of Lonely Planet’s top picks in Iceland.

Gufufoss and Seyðisfjörður- Iceland with a toddler
This book was an excellent resource to have on our Iceland trip. I highly recommend it:

The road from Egilsstaðir to Seyðisfjörður is quite fun to drive along, and fun to enjoy through the window. The road winds and move through snow covered mountains, waterfalls, and rocky fields.
We had heard a lot from guide books and friends about Seyðisfjörður, which is reputed to be a small artist town hidden away from the main roads, and we were looking forward to getting a sense of the culture.
Maybe it was our timing, but the town seemed quieter than we’d expected. We wandered about and saw almost no one else. A number of the shops weren’t open in the middle of the day on a Saturday, and those that were open were more crafty than arty. It’s worth noting that we were there in mid-May, and so it could just be that the locals were busy with other things or still nestled in for winter.
There was certainly a charm to Seyðisfjörður. As we wandered about, I tried to imagine what it would be like to live there. I could imagine how easy it would be for children to play with one another throughout the small, seemingly safe neighbourhoods and not have to worry much about traffic. It seemed like the kind of place where it would be easy to be social (or nosey!) and be a member of the community.
We left, admittedly a little underwhelmed compared to our expectations, but it was a different kind of stop on a road trip that was very rooted in nature.
Speaking of nature, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble on Gufafoss waterfall on the way into Seyðisfjörður. Coming down the hill into town, it would be very easy to miss this waterfall, which is tucked in beside the road. It’s worth a stop, and along the way anyway.

Hengifoss & Litlanesfoss | Two amazing waterfalls in the east of Iceland
Hengifoss is the third largest waterfall in Iceland, measuring 128 metres tall. The area around Hengifoss is the most popular hiking trail in the east of Iceland. Hengifoss has a little brother called Litlanesfoss. It measures about 20 metres high and falls over two steps.
Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss are just two natural wonders in Iceland’s beautiful east.
