Duister Den Haag / Dark The Hague (ENG subtitled) - short preview
A short preview about the most spine-chilling and bloodiest city tours of The Hague, The Netherlands.
See the dark side of The Hague as you go on a historical, yet spine-chilling walk through this Royal city. Follow in the blood-soaked footsteps of murderers, executioners and their victims. Hear stories that even the locals dare not talk about! Visit places with a mysterious or strange history, where you can still smell the scent of death and where ghostly apparitions appear when night falls...
The atmospheric Hofkwartier is one of the oldest and most picturesque parts of The Hague. But hiding behind this façade killers, executions, diseases and other mysteries are hidden, making the blood of politicians, nobles, kings and the ordinary Hagenezen still cling to the walls. Even centuries after their deaths they can still be heard (sometimes even literally)...

Migrant influx divides young Dutch.
The Netherlands is readying for general elections next year, and just like other countries in Europe, the political landscape is being shaped by the migration crisis.
A heated public debate is asking whether the Dutch people want their country to welcome newcomers. And young people particularly, like cousins Robbert and Wolf, are struggling with the question.

NETHERLANDS: SEX TOURISM INDUSTRY
Eng/Dutch/Nat
Officials in the Netherlands are concerned that a growing number of women are being brought to the country to work as prostitutes.
Criminal organisations, eager to cash in on the sex tourism industry, lure women from abroad with the promise of well-paid jobs in bars.
While many of these women travel from Latin America and Asia, APTV has found the latest recruits are from Eastern Europe and Russia.
Amsterdam's picturesque canals and tolerance of drugs and sex attract tourists from all over the world.
Recently, there's also increasing evidence that the Netherlands is becoming popular with men from Eastern Europe who specialise in smuggling women.
Dominique, from Poland, chooses to work as a prostitute. But she's in contact with many women who are forced into selling their bodies.
The traffickers seize their passports once they've arrived in Holland, then force them to hand over large chunks of their earnings.
Dominique explains that women are forced to work with pimps who often beat them or blackmail them.
SOUNDBITE (English)
They are going to kill their husbands, their children. They are putting bombs in their house, they are going to kill the mother, the father, they will not have any life of their own if they don't pay them the money that they want them to pay.
SUPERCAPTION: Dominique, Prostitute
While Dutch brothels are not officially legal, the government takes a liberal approach to commercial sex focusing on improving safety and health standards.
Of the estimated 25-thousand women working in Holland's sex industry, it's difficult to say just how many working the windows and dark alleys of the Red Light districts are doing it against their will. The trafficking of women takes place well underground.
Today's victims are seen as just another commodity, to be traded like arms and drugs. Before 1991, most of the women came from South American and Asian nations. But now about 70 per cent come from Russia, Poland and other Eastern European countries.
To combat the growing problem, the Dutch government has set up the Foundation against the Trafficking of Women. The organisation's director says illegal recruiters are eager to exploit poor women by promising higher wages abroad.
SOUNDBITE( English):
Sometimes the man is known by the family of the women, so everybody trusted that man and he brings mostly a few women to Europe and on the way in Holland they lost their papers.. And it's not a job in the restaurant or bar.. it's forced prostitution.
SUPERCAPTION: Ineke von de Wolff, Director Foundation Against Trafficking of Women
At the Criminal Intelligence Service, the Dutch equivalent to the F-B-I, inspectors are trying to stem the flow of women.
SOUNDBITE (Dutch):
There is good cooperation with many East European countries, as well as with Russia, Moscow through Interpol. Fortunately we can exchange information with almost every Eastern European country involved, which is a great help in combatting this problem.
SUPER CAPTION: Inspector Henk Hagen, Criminal Intelligence Service
Dominique warns if the women aren't smuggled into Holland -- they're sometimes sold into sex slavery even further afield.
SOUNDBITE (English):
It's boys from Russian Mafia who want to make money on it. They're bringing them here or they are selling them to countries like Turkia and Arabia.
SUPER CAPTION: Dominique, Prostitute
Some police and social workers believe that only legally recognising prostitution will put an end to these cruel abuses of women.

Suzanne Joinson talks about A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar
Suzanne Joinson, author of A LADY CYCLIST'S GUIDE TO KASHGAR, talks about her inspiration behind the book.
It is 1923 and Evangeline English, keen lady cyclist, arrives with her sister Lizzie at the ancient Silk Route city of Kashgar to help establish a Christian mission. Lizzie is in thrall to their forceful and unyielding leader Millicent, but Eva's motivations for leaving her bourgeois life back at home are less clear-cut. As they attempt to navigate their new home and are met with resistance and calamity, Eva commences work on her book, A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar...
In present-day London another story is beginning. Frieda, a young woman adrift in her own life, opens her front door one night to find a man sleeping on the landing. In the morning he is gone, leaving on the wall an exquisite drawing of a long-tailed bird and a line of Arabic script. Tayeb, who has fled to England from Yemen, has arrived on Frieda's doorstep just as she learns that she is the next-of-kin to a dead woman she has never heard of: a woman whose abandoned flat contains many surprises - among them an ill-tempered owl.
The two wanderers begin an unlikely friendship as their worlds collide, and they embark on a journey that is as great, and as unexpected, as Eva's.
A stunning debut peopled by unforgettable characters, A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar is an extraordinary story of inheritance and the search for belonging in a fractured and globalised world.
