Perugia, in Umbria, Italy
Perugia, the main city of Umbria, Italy, offers many attractions including lively pedestrian lanes, palaces, art by native son Perugino, an underground city created in the foundations of a Renaissance palace, several universities, excellent hotels and restaurants. Perugia's location in central Umbria is surrounded by other historic towns easily reached by train, bus or car. While nearby Tuscany is more famous, this region of Umbria is a traveler's delight. We take you inside the cathedral and walk the little lanes that lead from one piazza to the next, following the original medieval layout whose roots reach all the way back to the Etruscans 3,000 years ago.

PERUGIA OVER ROME | Why Perugia is our favourite Italian city
We stayed in Italy for 3 weeks, basing ourselves in Perugia (right in the centre of Italia when you look on the map) and visiting Florence and Rome for a weekend each.
Perugia was by far and away our favourite though, it's the perfect 'la dolce vita' Italiano experience without the crowds. The food is cheaper, the air is cleaner and the people are lovely. Plus the mini-metro (the cute transport system that gets commuters up the hill) is a big kid magnet! Total novelty every time you ride it.
If you're ever in Italy, don't miss Perugia, plus the big sites like Florence and Rome. Perugia is a hidden gem.

Perugia, Umbria, Italy
We're taking you to the city of Perugia in Umbria in northern Italy – not so well known as Rome or Florence, but lovely to visit.
Perugia is located 100 miles north of Rome, about a two-hour drive. It's in Umbria, a region just east of the more famous Tuscany.
The main street of Perugia is this grand Corso Vannucci. It's a wide pedestrian boulevard and it's just one of the great streets of the world. Not too long, it's about a kilometer from one end to the other, and just wide enough that there's plenty of room for people streaming along, or stopping and standing and talking, walking the dog, families out for a stroll. It's the gathering place of town. It's the location of the passeggiata when everybody comes out at 5 PM before dinner, buy the newspaper, have a drink, out for a stroll, see their friends, see their neighbors, perhaps make a new friend and just generally be part of the fabric of the city.
The old town has a network of narrow streets that are perfect for strolling. Some of them are for pedestrians only and some have some automobiles but the traffic is never terribly heavy, especially when you're on foot. And the whole town can be seen on foot, it's a compact zone. It makes a beautiful walk.
You'll find a variety of places to go strolling and exploring. Some of them are wide thoroughfares for shopping, others are narrow, that hearken back to the medieval days.
This is a longer more complete video that combines several shorter pieces presented earlier.

Umbria is a region of historic and modern central Italy. It is the only Italian region having neither a coastline nor a border with other countries. It includes the Lake Trasimeno, Cascata delle Marmore, and is crossed by the River Tiber. The regional capital is Perugia. Umbria is known for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy, and influence on culture. The region is characterized by hills and historical towns such as Assisi (a World Heritage Site associated with St. Francis of Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and other Franciscan sites, works by Giotto and Cimabue), Norcia (the hometown of St. Benedict), Gubbio, Spoleto, Todi, Città di Castello, Orvieto, Castiglione del Lago, Narni, Amelia, and other small cities.
Umbria is bordered by Tuscany to the west, Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. Partly hilly and partly flat, and fertile owing to the valley of the Tiber, its topography includes part of the central Apennines, with the highest point in the region at Monte Vettore on the border of the Marche, at 2,476 m (8,123 ft); the lowest point is Attigliano, 96 m (315 ft). It is the only Italian region having neither a coastline nor a common border with other countries. The commune of Città di Castello has an exclave named Monte Ruperto within Marche .
The Tiber River forms the approximate border with Lazio, although its source is just over the Tuscan border. The Tiber's three principal tributaries flow southward through Umbria. The Chiascio basin is relatively uninhabited as far as Bastia Umbra. About 10 km (6 mi) farther on, it joins the Tiber at Torgiano. The Topino, cleaving the Apennines with passes that the Via Flaminia and successor roads follow, makes a sharp turn at Foligno to flow NW for a few kilometres before joining the Chiascio below Bettona. The third river is the Nera, flowing into the Tiber further south, at Terni; its valley is called the Valnerina. The upper Nera cuts ravines in the mountains; the lower, in the Tiber basin, has created a wide floodplain.
In antiquity, the plain was covered by a pair of shallow, interlocking lakes, the Lacus Clitorius and the Lacus Umber. They were drained by the Romans over several hundred years. An earthquake in the 4th century and the political collapse of the Roman Empire resulted in the refilling of the basin. It was drained a second time, almost a thousand years later, during a 500-year period: Benedictine monks started the process in the 13th century, and the draining was completed by an engineer from Foligno in the 18th century.
In literature, Umbria is referred to as il cuor verde d'Italia (the green heart of Italy). The phrase is taken from a poem by Giosuè Carducci, the subject of which is the source of the Clitunno River in Umbria.Wikipedia

Minimetrò Perugia
MiniMetro is a family of cable propelled automated people mover systems built by Poma/Leitner Group. The vehicles either run on rails or an air cushion and have either a detachable grip (to the cable) or a fixed grip. Leitner has a test track for the vehicles in Sterzing. Current maximum capacity of the system is around 8000 passengers per hour. The latest system installed with the MiniMetro brand was the Cairo Airport People Mover that opened in May 2013.
In Perugia, a 3.2-kilometre (2.0 mi) stretch with seven stations opened in February 2008 to relieve the inner city of car traffic. It consists of more than 25 vehicles of 5 m each, with a capacity of 25 passengers and a speed of up to 25 kilometers (16 mi) per hour. The interval between successive vehicles is around 1,5 minutes. In 2013 the system carried 10,000 passengers per day.Plans exist for a second line.Similar systems are under consideration in Bolzano and Copenhagen.
It runs by cable, from Pian di Massiano on the outskirts -- there's a stadium and a lot of car parking, past the main FS train station at Fontivegge. Then it starts to climb, to Madonna Alta, plunging underground for two stops. The first underground stop is Cupa, which is at the foot of the escalators that descend from Via dei Priori. Then it parallels the Galleria Kennedy, plunging under the very center of down (very deep at this point) to Pincetto, which is adjacent to the covered market (Mercato Coperto). You go up a few escalators and emerge in Piazza Matteoti, which is a block over from the Corso Vannucci. It's easy to use -- there are ticket machines at every station, and they're multilingual. They accept coins, bills, credit cards and ATM cards (bancomat). A single ride costs 1 euro; there are discounts for multiple rides, or you can buy a pass.
Don't forget to hang onto your ticket! While officials might not be necessarily checking tickets, you need your ticket to open the turnstile to get onto the train platform AND again to exit the platform at your destination. The trains are little silver cars and are cute, really. They come every couple of minutes. They're painted bright red inside. The stations themselves are ultramodern and striking, and were designed by the award-winning French architect, Jean Nouvel.
