Gondar (Ethiopia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Gondar in Ethiopia.
Gondar is a city of palaces and castles: Ethiopia in the seventeenth century. For the first time in the country’s history, Kaiser Fasilidas began with the construction of a walled palace. Until then, the emperors of that time took part in various campaigns during the dry season. Only during the rainy season was the court located in a camp thus, in the course of a century, a huge fortification was built with several royal palaces and a number of churches. Emperor Yohannes, son of Fasilidas, took over the throne after his father’s death in 1667, when he had the palace extended considerably. But apart from the library tower and an adjoining wall, little of it is visible today. The remaining architecture is reminiscent of European castles. The next emperor, Fasilidas’ grandson, Iyasu The first, had a further two-storey palace built close to the original one. Set in a magnificent location overlooking the city, the palace ruins stimulate the imagination as to how splendid this all once was. Finally, the Empire disintegrated into warring principalities, a fact that spelled the inevitable decline of the imperial city of Gondor.

Gondar or Gonder (Amharic: ጎንደር?, Gonder is a city and separate woreda in Ethiopia. It has a latitude and longitude of 12°36′N 37°28′E with an elevation of 2133 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by the Gondar Zuria woreda.Gondar previously served as the capital of both the Ethiopian Empire and the subsequent Begemder Province. The city holds the remains of several royal castles, including those in Fasil Ghebbi (the Royal Enclosure), for which Gondar has been called the Camelot of Africa.
Gondar traditionally was divided into several neighborhoods or quarters: Addis Alem, where the Muslim inhabitants dwelled; Kayla Meda, where the adherents of Beta Israel lived; Abun Bet, centered on the residence of the Abuna, or nominal head of the Ethiopian Church; and Qagn Bet, home to the nobility.Gondar is also a noted center of ecclesiastical learning of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and known for having 44 churches – for many years more than any other settlement in Ethiopia. Gondar and its surrounding countryside constitute the homeland of most Ethiopian Jews
The modern city of Gondar is popular as a tourist destination for its many picturesque ruins in Fasil Ghebbi (the Royal Enclosure), from which the emperors once reigned. The most famous buildings in the city lie in the Royal Enclosure, which include Fasilides' castle, Iyasu's palace, Dawit's Hall, a banqueting hall, stables, Empress Mentewab's castle, a chancellery, library and three churches. Near the city lie Fasilides' Bath, home to an annual ceremony where it is blessed and then opened for bathing; the Qusquam complex, built by Empress Mentewab; the eighteenth century Ras Mikael Sehul's Palace and the Debre Berhan Selassie Church.
Downtown Gondar shows the influence of the Italian occupation of the late 1930s. The main piazza features shops, a cinema, and other public buildings in a simplified Italian Moderne style still distinctively of the period despite later changes and, frequently, neglect. Villas and flats in the nearby quarter that once housed occupation officials and colonists are also of interest.
The town is home to the University of Gondar, which includes Ethiopia's main faculty of medicine.
Air transport is served by Gondar Airport (ICAO code HAGN, IATA GDQ), also known as Atse Tewodros Airport, after the Emperor of Ethiopia (Atse) Tewodros. It is 18 km (11 miles) south of the city.Intercity bus service is provided by the Selam Bus Line Share Company.Wikipedia

What to Do While in Gondar
Gondar City is home to a number of historical attractions:
Fasil Ghebbi, 16th and 17th centuries: This fortress-city was once the residence of the Ethiopian emperor Fasilides and his successors. It houses palaces, churches, monasteries and unique public and private buildings with Hindu and Arab influences. The fortress city functioned as the centre of the Ethiopian government until 1864. After its decline in the 19th century, the city of Gondar continued to be an important commercial and transport hub for northwest Ethiopia
Debre Birhan Selassie Church: This is one of the most important churches of Ethiopia. It was named Debre Birhan, Mountain of Light, after the Emperor's nickname. The ceiling is covered with the faces of hundreds of angels while the walls depict biblical scenes and saints.
Fasilides Bath: This was the bathing place of Emperor Fasilides, the 17th century founder of Gondar, his capital. It is now used for Timket which celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.

Ethiopian Emperors, Castles and Ruins
Tamirat Belay- Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Heritage Management at Gondar University leads a tour of the ancient castle ruins in Gondar Ethiopia.
Filmed and Edited by: Mark Miessner
The walled palace compound was built during the reigns of the Ethiopian emperors, who ruled between 1632 and 1855. Fasilades (r. 1632-1667) and chose Gondar for his residency.
During the Fasilades’ reign and years which followed, many churches were built in the town.
Also the succeeding emperors had their palaces constructed for them.
Yohannes I (r. 1667-1682), Iyasu I (r. 1682-1706), Dawid III (r. 1716-1721), Bekaffa (r. 1721-1730), Iyasu II (r. 1730-1735), Yoas (r. 1755-1769).
Empress Mintiwab (wife of Bekaffa) had her palace built in the south-north direction.
Apart from the royal castles within the walls, there are also many other remains of the court life. They include stables, situated next to the Bekaffa’s palace, or kitchen of the Fasilides palace. Also a library and archive built for a Fasilides’ son, Yohannes I, and lion cages from the reign of Dawit III.
One can see what is left from a music hall and in the bathes there are still cow’s horns which used to serve as hooks for the clothes. The horns are not 17th century originals, but that does not matter.
Unfortunately, apart from the castles themselves, the condition of most ruins do not make it easy to imagine the purpose for which they were used. Here, the Gonder guides of knowledge and talent help to see what life was like at the royal court of the time.
The latest built is Kweskwam, palace and monastery of Empress Mintiwab. It is situated in the western outskirts of the town at a distance from the main palace compound. Kweskwam is impressive, huge and quite well preserved, with nobody to disturb the visitor, except for hordes of birds and crowds of lizards.
Another highlight of Kuskuam is a coffin, which can be shown by the guardian of the place to those who are interested. The coffin, placed in a church crypt, contains three skeletons. A bit crowded? Obviously, it is.
One of them is said to be Queen Mintiwab herself, accompanied by Iyasu and Yoas. How much is this true? Probably nobody will ever know. However, the three skeletons placed in a tiny coffin manage to produce a royal impression.
Horses and horse trade played a very important part in the history of Gondar.
Horses, according to the color as well as other features, marked the level of nobility of the owner.
The fact is even more interesting, when you consider that throughout the history of Ethiopia, horses were seldom used.
Mules ridden by the aristocracy provided the most efficient mean of transportation in the mountains.
During Fasilades’ reign Gonder rose to power and its fame started circulating in the contemporary world.
Apart from the Emperor Fasilades Palace, there is also his bath compound which was named after him.
This place, known as Fasil Mewagnia, is composed of a rectangular pond, or pool, with a tiny lion-shape castle-like building on its side. The baths are at a walking distance from the castles and still today, the pool serves for the baptismal ceremony during the Timqet celebration every year.
Huge old trees sitting at the sides of the pool, impressive with their external roots holding the pool’s walls, turn the baths today into a city park. A benefit of a shadow makes a special prize for the tired tourists, who can take a nice break here from the hard job of exploring distant lands and visiting historical places.
