City Description:
Christchurch, known for its English heritage, is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Flat-bottomed punts glide on the Avon River, which meanders through the city centre. On its banks are cycling paths, the green expanse of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens. In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes destroyed many of the historic centre's stone-built buildings.Christchurch’s Cardboard Cathedral,” named after one of its primary construction materials, is a temporary stand-in for the former neo-Gothic edifice. Stores and cafes inhabit shipping containers at the Re:START retail complex. Canterbury Museum, telling the story of the city, also has Maori and Antarctic exploration collections. Christchurch Gondola travels up Mt. Cavendish for panoramic views of the city, the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps. Christchurch is a gateway for dolphin-spotting in the Banks Peninsula's Akaroa Harbour, skiing at Mt. Hutt and scenic TranzAlpine railway trips through the Southern Alps.
Weather and Events:
The city receives most of its visitors Nov–Apr, the warmest months. May–Oct is cool, with nighttime temperatures around freezing Jun–Aug. In the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, the city is sunny and relatively dry and can be subjected to strong Nor’wester winds. The World Buskers Festival (Jan) brings street performers to the city. The New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival (Apr) features artists from around the world. The NZ Cup and Show Week (Nov), a major agricultural fair, also encompasses horse racing and fashion.

Walk with me on the Quail Island, Christchurch, New Zealand,
Ōtamahua/Quail Island is an inner harbour island, reached via a short ferry ride from Lyttelton. It's Canterbury’s largest island but is easily explored in a day.
Wildlife
Birds such as black-backed/karoro and red-billed gull/tarāpunga, white-flippered penguins/kororā, terns, shags and oystercatchers are often seen from the observation point. Fantails/pīwakawaka and grey warblers/ iroriro are present on the island.
Banks Peninsula tree weta have recently been transferred to the island - you may see custom-built weta homes attached to the trunks of manuka trees.
On warm summer days you’re likely to spot resident lizards like geckos and skinks.
The Ōtamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust and DOC are working to establish native vegetation and re-introduce native wildlife. A maintained network of traps protects the island from introduced predators, with the exception of mice. The island has been free of possums, rabbits, cats, hedgehogs, mustelids and rats since 2006.
Know before you go
Toilets are located at Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach), Skiers Beach and the Caretaker's Cottage.
Most track surfaces on the island are evenly graded or grassed, but sturdy footwear is recommended.
The island contains a number of tracks used by the Ōtamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust for planting access. Stay on marked tracks to avoid stepping on new plants and for your own personal safety.
Carry adequate clothing and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather - parts of the island are very exposed.
All walking times are approximate.
There are preciptitous unfenced cliffs. Supervise small children at all times.
There is a danger of windfall or treefall in high or gusty wind conditions.
Ōtamahua / Quail Island is at times subject to extreme fire danger. If fire breaks out on the island:
Head to the nearest beach or coastal area, if it is safe to do so.
If you have a mobile, dial 111 for fire.
Look after the island
No fires except gas-fired BBQs in the picnic area on Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach).
All animals, including dogs, are prohibited, as is the carrying of firearms.
All wildlife, plants, natural and historic features are protected. Be respectful.
Take home your rubbish.
No unauthorised vehicles (including mountain bikes) allowed.
Camping is permitted only in designated areas.
Bait stations and predator traps are in use at all times. Read the warning signs on the wharf and around the island.
Do not remove rocks from the sea wall along the beach.
Camping on the island for approved groups
Overnight camping on the island is available at Whakamaru Beach (swimmers beach) for approved groups.
Christchurch City Highlight New Zealand Sights
Hey, everybody!
I wanted to show you guys the wonderful little bits and pieces that I get to see every day in Christchurch, New Zealand. I don't know if I love Christchurch but it certainly has some nice spots and interesting art to see. The earthquake damage is also interesting and adds another element to the cityscape.
I hope you guys enjoy this little video and if you ever visit Christchurch I hope you recognise some of the sights in this video. Take a tour of Christchurch and soak up the old, the new, and the damaged.
Chch city leaders call for CBD to be tidied up
Crown rebuild agency Otakaro will begin guided walking tours tomorrow to showcase the inner city. But, as Logan Church reports, some people are questioning whether there is anything to show off at all.
New Zealand South Island 9 Day Road Trip 2019
We arrived bright and early at Christchurch Airport on Saturday 26th of January 2019, picked up our rental car from Go Rentals NZ and then were on our way for our 9 day road trip around New Zealand's South Island.
We travelled over 2600kms in our rental car across the 9 days. We had done a lot of research prior to arriving in NZ and planned out the following itinerary that we followed:
Day 1: Christchurch to Hokitika - along this route, we stopped at Castle Hill and Arthurs Pass. We then chilled in Hokitika for a bit, before heading out to Hokitika Gorge, Dorothy Falls, Sunset Point and the Glow Worms at night.
Day 2: Hokitika to Franz Josef - unfortunately our Heli Hike tour got cancelled at the Franz Josef glacier due to bad weather so we took our time getting to Franz Josef, stopping at Lake Maniapua, Lake Matheson and then doing the walk to Fox Glacier.
Day 3: Franz Josef to Wanaka - our Heli Hike tour got cancelled again today so instead we just walked to the start of glacier. It was a long drive to Wanaka and we made many stops along the way on the scenic route, including at Knights Point, Roaring Billy Falls, Thunder Creek Falls, Haast River, Fantail Falls and we did the Blue Pools Walk. Also, along the way, we had great views of both Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawae. When we got to Wanaka, we chilled at a lakeside bar and walked to That Wanaka Tree!
Day 4: Wanaka to Queenstown: we started the day early and visited the Wanaka Lavender Farm and had a quick look at Puzzling World. We then challenged ourselves with the Roy's Peak Hike and cooled off after at Glendhu Bay. We took the beautiful route to Queenstown via Cardrona Valley. By the time we arrived in Queenstown, it was fairly late so we just picked up some food and went to bed.
Day 5: Queenstown - in the morning we went for a nice drive along Lake Wakatipu, making stops at Glenorchy Wharf, Bennett's Bluff Lookout and Bob's Cove. In the afternoon we did white water rafting at Shotover River with Go Orange which was a definite highlight for us! After, we explored Queenstown some more and chilled by the lake.
Day 6: Milford Sound - today we made the long trip Milford Sound where we did a 2 hours cruise in the fjord. There were many nice stops along the way including, Te Anau, Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, Gertude Valley, The Chasm, Tukoto Bridge, Pop's View and Falls Creek. After a long day of driving, we treated ourselves with an essential stop at Fergburger back in Queenstown.
Day 7: Queenstown to Mt Cook - it was another amazing drive towards Mt Cook/ Aoraki National Park. We stopped at Pillars of the Kings, drove through Lindis Pass and made stops at the amazing blue lakes of Lake Ruataniwha and Lake Pukaki. When we arrived in the national park, we first did the Hooker Valley Track which was incredible. At night, we did some star gazing!
Day 8: Mt Cook to Christchurch - we started the morning with walks to Tasman Lake and the Tasman Glacier View. We then stopped at the breathtaking Lake Pukaki again before arriving at Lake Tepako. In Christchurch, we had a little look at the city, including at the earthquake memorial and a walk through the botanical gardens before having dinner and then dessert at Strawberry Fare.
Day 9: Christchurch - our flight wasn't until 9pm so we made the most of our last day by spending a few hours at Hanmer Springs to chill. We then had a bit more of a look in Christchurch, walking down New Regent St and looking at the devastation of the earthquake at Cathedral Square.
Overall, we had an amazing time in the South Island of New Zealand. We were constantly amazed by all the incredible views and natural wonders the island has to offer. I can't wait to explore New Zealand some more in the future!!

Sumner Beach, Christchurch NZ
A few scenes taken during a walk along the beach.
Christchurch, New Zealand
The largest city of the South Island, Christchurch is also New Zealand's oldest, having been granted its Royal Charter in 1856. Known as the ‘Garden City’, for its high percentage of green areas, Christchurch has the feel of an old, English city, thanks to the ambitions of settlers who wanted to recreate the similarly-named area of Oxford.
