Guildford Castle
it is thought to have been built shortly after the 1066 invation of England by William the conquerer. He built castles in all the important towns to prevent rebellion and strengthens hold in the country. Guilford was an obvious site for a castle as it was the only town in Surrey apart from South Wark. It was also an important route between London and South coast and the West of England.

There is always a beautiful church around the corner and the cathedral church of the Holy Spirit, Guildford is no different. An Anglican Cathedral designed by Sir Eduard Maufe, It was built between 1936 and 1961 and remains the seat of the Diocese of Guildford. Guildford Cathedral markets itself as the peoples cathedral, a place of welcome, worship, inspiration, and engagement for people off all ages. Also for horror buffs you'll be pleased to know that scene in the classic horror film The Omen were filmed at the Cathedral.

Service of Consecration of Guildford Cathedral, 17 May 1961:
(This is a restored version of a damaged telerecording copy of the live BBC TV broadcast of the Service of Consecration, which took place in the still-unfinished cathedral in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, with the cathedral choir, directed by Barry Rose and accompanied by Simon Preston. The commentator was Richard Dimbleby. The cathedral choir was enhanced for the occasion by professional singers from London and by choristers from St Andrew’s Kingsbury, North London, where Barry Rose had been organist and choirmaster before taking up his appointment at Guildford. The film shows just how far apart the choir stalls at Guildford are – the furthest apart of any British cathedral, in fact, which is why Guildford broke new ground by having its services conducted “from the floor”, a practice that was virtually unheard of at the time. We ask your indulgence for the generally poor quality of the audio, which makes the choristers sound as if they suffer from vibrato, and for occasional missing frames in the film, whereby both picture and sound jump from time to time. Age UK Surrey and Guildford Cathedral have teamed up to hold their annual carol concert. Around a thousand people assembled in the building, which has recently opened after renovation. Our reporter Katherine Bett joined them to see what was going on.

Guildford was made a diocese in 1927, covering most of Surrey. Work on its consequent cathedral to be a lead centre of worship and community events venue began nine years later. The diocese chose Sir Edward Maufe as its architect and the foundation stone was laid by Dr Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1936.
Construction was intended to be over many years to raise further funds, to achieve great height by incorporating exceptionally large arches and blocks of angular stone overlaid with brickwork and was suspended during Second World War — the building could not be consecrated until 17 May 1961.
In the meanwhile Guildford's restored medieval Holy Trinity Church served as pro-cathedral. In 1952 Walter Boulton, who had ministered mostly in India, was made provost (head priest at the pro-cathedral and pastor of the parish), and revitalized the fund-raising for the new cathedral. When it was completed sufficiently for public worship, another cleric was chosen as first dean of the cathedral by the bishop, after consulting with various benefactors and influential clergy within Anglicanism.
In the 1950s a buy a brick scheme was used to raise funds for construction, to great success. Each brick cost 2s 6d and entitled the buyer to sign their name on the brick. The Queen and Prince Philip both signed bricks, which are on display inside the cathedral.
It stands in a commanding spot on Stag Hill — so named because the Kings of England used to hunt here — and its solid red brick outline is visible for miles around; it immediately overlooks the University of Surrey. Its bricks are made from clay taken from the hill on which it stands.

Guildford has Saxon roots and historians attribute its location to the existence of a gap in the North Downs where the River Wey was forded by the Harrow Way By AD 978 it was home to an early English Royal Mint. On the building of the Wey Navigation and Basingstoke Canal Guildford was connected to a network of waterways that aided its prosperity. In the 20th century, the University of Surrey and Guildford Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral, were added.
Due to recent development running north from Guildford, and linking to the Woking area, Guildford now officially forms the southwestern tip of the Greater London Built-up Area, as defined by the Office for National Statistics.
Guildford lies at the eastern end of the A31 and is bypassed by the A3, which links London and Portsmouth. The M25 is to the north-east of the town. Guildford has two railway stations. The main station is on the west side of the River Wey, across the river from the main shopping area and the bus station. It is on the Portsmouth Direct Line between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour. Guildford's other station, London Road, is about half a mile (1 km) north-east of the town centre, on the New Guildford Line. It is served by stopping services only between Guildford and Waterloo.
