Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail (桃园谷远足径) | The Sleeping Dog | The Batanes of Taiwan ????????
Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail (桃源谷)
(The Sleeping Dog) (The Batanes of Taiwan ????????)
Taoyuan Valley in northern Taiwan has a very large dog sleeping on its beautiful grassland.
This time we returned to the northernmost part of Yilan County, to be exact, the coastal mountains between the villages of Dali (大里) and Daxi (大溪), to visit Taoyuan Valley (桃源谷), a grassy highland area with gorgeous views.
If you start at either Dali or Daxi the whole walk to the other village/railway station takes about seven hours depending on your pace. You’ll have to conquer some steep section with a lot of stone steps but you will be rewarded by probably the best coastal views in northern Taiwan. From high up you can take in the ocean and the coastline below. Make sure to get an early start and only attempt the whole walk if you are in good shape.
After about two thirds of the way (when starting from Dali) you’ll come to what is called Taoyuan Valley. Grazing water buffaloes are responsible for the short cut grass here, similar to the Qingtiangang (擎天崗)area of Yangmingshan National Park (陽明山國家公園) in the north of Taipei City. While this “valley” is quite a distance from Dali and Daxi, it is surprisingly well visited on weekends, thanks to a small access road and a small car park, the road connecting to the town of Gongliao (貢寮), west of Fulong.
We took the train to Daxi Railway Station and started from there. Instead of choosing the more popular route via Mt. Fanshuliao (蕃薯寮山; 456m) we decided to get to Taoyuan Valley on the Stone Guanyin Trail (石觀音線步道), which starts near the coastal highway, about halfway between Dali and Daxi. The trail is named for a temple dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, which you will pass on your way up.
To get to the trail head, turn left after exiting Daxi Railway Station. Walk about 25 minutes north along the highway. You will see Guishan Island (Turtle Island) to your right. The river you’ll pass (take the smaller road parallel to the highway to avoid dangerous encounters with gravel trucks on the shoulder-less highway bridge) is presumably the reason for the village’s name, which translates as “Big River”.
At the far end of the valley is a pavilion where you can take a rest and take in the scenery. The area is marvelous. On weekdays you might have the whole place all to yourself, safe for your bovine companions.
Final recommendations. If you are up to the task, do the whole trail from Daxi to Dali or vice versa. I wouldn’t combine it with the Caoling Historic Trail from Fulong. That trail is only interesting once you come to Yakou, which you will pass on your way from Dali or Daxi anyway. Like mentioned before, pick a day when the weather is perfect. You don’t want to walk all the way up only to find out that everything is covered in mist. During the summer, bring plenty of water and sun protection. There is no shadow once you are up there.
The trail stretches approximately 5 kilometers and passes the peak of Mt. Fanshuliao at 456 meters above sea level. It is tougher than all the other trails because it is the steepest. Hikers get occasional breaks as the trail levels off or drops down briefly, then rises again.
However, the hardship is more than revarded as the trail passes through natural forests where hikers can enjoy cooling shade as they savor the expansive and relaxing views of the Pacific Ocean at nearly every turn of the trail. This is a perfect place enjoy an invigorating green shower and a mildly challenging mountain walk.
Slopes flat len near the top of the ridge, where the Taoyuan Valley is located. Taoyuan Valley consists of a wide swath of grass covered slope land that streches about three kilometers and offers 360-degree views that include Turtle Island and the layered peaks of the Toucheng and Gongliao areas. The expansive vistas of Taoyuan Valley uplift the spirits of all who enter here.
How to get there?
There are 3 options to get there:
From Fulong Station, You can hire a Taxi going to the trail. Just show the photo and the name in a Chinese.
From Dali Station, Caoling Historic Trail. You can also start your trail here going to the peak..It takes 3 to 4 hrs of walking going to the peak then you can exit going Daxi Station (5 kilometers).
From Daxi Station, walk around 15 to 20 minutes until you reach the sign Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail then follow until you reach the peak. It takes 3 to 5 hours of walking.

I did not film that much this time, but I hope you can enjoy watching nonetheless.
The start of the video: After arriving in Dali the 31st I went hiking up Caoling Historic Trail during the morning of the 1st of April.
As I was hiking I heard there was snakes around, and I did not only encounter a cat but also a water buffalo! It was a rainy day, but the view was still beautiful.
04:10 - Later I headed south to Toucheng where I bicycled to the beach.
04:50 - During the April the 2nd I joined a bout tour, on which I saw cute whales and I also went to Guishan Island.
09:22 - The 3rd I went to Changhua, where I first visited the Confucius Temple there.

宜蘭龜山島賞海豚 Dolphin Viewing around Guishan Island, Yilan County , Taiwan, 0517, 2010-2
2011 LOHAS Farm – Episode 025 A Trip to Toucheng and Jiaoxi
Formerly known as Touwei, Toucheng is located on the northernmost side of the Lanyang Plain, facing the Pacific Ocean. Of the total area of the Lanyang Plain (more than 100 square kilometers), mountains account for 60% and were exploited by Han people earliest. Located at the Lanyang Plain at 24 degrees, 48 minutes North, Jiaoxi Township belongs to the subtropical climate zone combined with the temperate and tropical climate zones. The weather is hot and humid with abundant water that facilitates irrigation and leads to fertile land, making Jiaoxi Township a place suitable for agriculture, fishery and animal husbandry. The show brings the audience to Toucheng Township and Jiaoxi Township to join a whale-watching tour around Guishan Island and enjoy a rural life in a farm, where local wine and souvenirs are offered. Next, the show takes the audience to Jiaoxi nearby to experience the life as a fisherman and then visit a gallery to relax. Last, the show visits the Lotus Ecological Museum to appreciate lotus and taste lotus cuisine.

Lanyang Museum (蘭陽博物館), Yilan, Taiwan, 12/20/2012
The museum was designed by renowned architect Kris Yao, modeled on the shape of the cuesta landform commonly seen along Taiwan's northeast coast, with reference to other local geographical features including Guishan Island and the Wushi coral reefs. It reflects Yilan's scenic, cultural and historical characteristics.
The Lanyang Museum in Taiwan's northeastern Yilan County is among the winning buildings in the 2012 International Architecture Awards, according to the county government Sept. 3.
The IAA awards, launched in 2005 by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, aim to honor and celebrate the most outstanding architecture designed and built throughout the world, the museum website noted. The event is currently co-organized by the museum and the European center.
