Welcome Drink at Xijiang Qianhu Miaozhai China
Welcome Drink at Xijiang Qianhu Miaozhai China
Located on the north side of Leigong Hill, Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is about 35 km (22 miles) away from Kailicity; the capital of Qiandongnan, and about 260 km (162 miles) from Guiyang City; the capital city of Guizhou Province.
Being the largest gathering place of the Miao in China and even the world, about ten natural Miao ethnic villages exist in Xijiang Town and the Miao culture is best preserved in this area. According to the latest statistics, there are about 1,288 families with a total population of around 6,000 people living there. 99.5% of the local people are Miao nationality.
In Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, layer upon layer of closely connected wooden-stilted houses are built along the contour of the hill with the Baishui River passing through the bottom of the mountain. Wind-rain bridges connect the banks of the river. During the day the sunlight makes the red wood board shine brightly, and in the evening, smoke from the chimneys spirals, forming a white belt around the mountain's waist.
The Miao Nationality Museum: Eleven exhibition halls in the museum show every aspect of Miao life from culture, clothes, living behaviors, customs, construction and art. At the entrance of the museum, visitors are required to show their village entrance tickets.
The Singing and Dancing Show: The Old Songs of Miao Nationality sung by seniors in the village is excellent. Two performances are held twice everyday, one at around 11:30 and the other at around 17:00 on the square. The exact performance time is a little different everyday, so it is suggested to confirm the schedule when you are there.
Two Streets: There are two main streets in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, an ancient one and a modern-built Youfang Street. As well as unique shops the old street has many snacks stores, restaurants, and silver products stores.
Original Lifestyle of Miao Nationality: If one wants to appreciate the local life, wandering around maybe the best way. Roaming around the wooden-stilted houses and twisting lanes, travelers can see and absorb the authentic local life. Around Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, one can see the terrace and appreciate how locals work on the farms.
The Panorama of the Village: The best place to see the panorama of Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is the Sightseeing Platform. Many visitors like to take photos from here. One can even rent a traditional costume of the Miao people if you are interested. Viewing the night scene on the platform is the most wonderful thing. The lamps of different houses twinkling in the dark make the night bewitching. It is really worth seeing.

Quilts of Southwest China
Textiles are material evidence of history and culture and can tell us much about trade, religion, traditions, migration, communities, and individuals. The intangible characteristics—the uses, meanings, stories, skills and knowledge about production—associated with these textiles are often integral to the identity and cultural heritage of individuals and communities.
The textile traditions in China of making and using quilts or bedcovers have received little attention by scholars, collectors, and museums; few examples are in public or private collections and little has been published on them. The research and collecting done for Quilts of Southwest China provides some of the first documentation of the intangible and tangible cultural heritage associated with the practices of piecing and appliquéing fabric together to form artistic and functional textiles.
Visit quiltstudy.org to view the online exhibition and learn detailed information about the pieces featured in this video.
Quilts of Southwest China originated and debuted at Michigan State University Museum in 2015. The International Quilt Study Center & Museum version of the exhibition includes pieces from the IQSCM collection in addition to those from the Yunnan Nationalities Museum, Guangxi Nationalities Museum and Guizhou Nationalities Museum that were part of the original MSUM installation. Curators of the IQSCM exhibition: Marsha MacDowell, Ph.D. (MSUM), Lijun Zhang, Ph.D. (Guangxi Nationalities Museum) and Marin Hanson, M.A. (IQSCM).
This exhibition would not have been possible without the commitment of the following institutions to engage in and support a collaborative, bi-national research inquiry into the intangible and tangible aspects of a material culture tradition in southwest China:
Michigan State University Museum (East Lansing, Michigan, USA), Mathers Museum of World Cultures, Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana, USA), Museum of International Folk Art (Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA), Yunnan Nationalities Museum (Kunming, Yunnan, China), Guangxi Nationalities Museum (Nanning, Guangxi, China), Guizhou Nationalities Museum (Guiyang, Guizhou, China), and the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Lincoln, Nebraska, USA).
Guizhou, China (Part 2)
A group of 28 friends toured Guizhou, China in April 2009. This video records their visit to Xingyi's Wedding Museum to learn the culture of its people and to Wanfenglin Park where they beheld the unique beauty of its many cone mountains. They walked through a village in its valley to see how the villagers lived and tracked through the rough but magnificent Melinghe Gorge. The finale of this part of the sojourn was to experience the power and vastness of the Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Yun Feng Tun Bu, Guizhou
In the Qiyan Town, Anshun City of Guizhou, are scattered more than 40 well-preserved Tunbu villages. Yun Feng Tun Bu Scenic Area is the most representative one. It comprises eight Tunbu villages such as Yunshantun, Benzhai, Leitun and Xiaoshanzhai.
According to historical records, Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty, once deployed his troops to start Southern Expedition, aiming at conquering the southern China. After the Southern Expedition, the troops were ordered to station and farm the wastelands. Yun Feng Tun Bu was the core area where the troops stationed.
Today, the defense walls, watchtowers, lanes and residential buildings of the Tunbu villages in Yun Feng Tun Bu Scenic Area are well preserved. The residential buildings were courtyards (Siheyuan in Chinese), featuring the characteristics of those in the southern China.
Walking Suzhou's Pingjiang Lu Area / 平江路
Pingjiang Road / 平江路, historically known as Shiquan Li (十泉里), is a street and historic district in Gusu District (formerly the Pingjiang District), northeastern Suzhou.
The main street (Pingjiang Road) is located along Pingjiang He (平江河) and is 1,606 metres (5,269 ft) in length. It stretches from Ganjiang Donglu (干将东路) in the south to Baita Road East (白塔东路) in the northwest, near the Humble Administrator's Garden and Suzhou Museum. The entire historic district covers an area of 0.4 square kilometres (0.15 sq mi). The city of Suzhou was known as Pingjiang during Southern Song Dynasty. As a major thoroughfare of eastern Suzhou back then, the street carries on the former name of the city. It was featured in the map Pingjiang Tu (平江图), produced in the year 1229. There are 51 smaller alleys intersecting the street. There are also about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) of canals within the historic district.
In 2009, Pingjiang Road is listed as a Zhongguo Lishi Wenhua Mingjie (中国历史文化名街, literally: Famous historical and cultural street of China), one of the first nine streets with such title across China.[6] Along with Shantang Street, the area was also declared a Zhongguo Lishi Wenhua Jiequ (中国历史文化街区, literally: Historical and cultural block of China) in 2015.
Couple's Retreat Garden (Ou Yuan), a noted Classical Garden located within the historic district, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Classical Gardens of Suzhou. Guanqian Street is also in walking distance. There are 2 national-class and 12 provincial-class protection units within the historic district. Pingjiang Road undergone a major renovation prior to the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee which took place in Suzhou in 2004.

The forum, which lasts from July 19th to 21st, will focus on building the concept of an ecological civilization in China, with goals to develop into an internationally influential forum. But why is such an important forum being held in Guiyang, one of China's lesser known cities deep in the interior.

Sandu Shui Village People, Danzhai County, Guizhou
Sandu is the China's only autonomous region for the Shui people. The Shui are the descendants of the Luoyue people, one of the ancient tribes living in Danzhai County, Guizhout. Shui means water in Chinese, wherefore, the Shui people refer to people living along the waterside. The Shui People gained their name because they mainly dwell along the rivers and streams; their living customs, worship, and folklores, all revolve around water.
