4K Movies - The Most Beautiful Places in the World: “Gulf of Fonseca”
The Most Beautiful Places in the World: “Gulf of Fonseca”
The Gulf of Fonseca part of the Pacific Ocean, is a gulf in Central America, bordering El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Gulf of Fonseca, Spanish Golfo de Fonseca, sheltered inlet of the Pacific Ocean, was discovered for Europeans in 1522 by Gil González de Ávila, and named by him after his patron, Archbishop Juan Fonseca, the implacable enemy of Columbus
Gulf’s entrance, marked by Cape Amapala in El Salvador and Cape Cosigüina in Nicaragua, is about 20 miles (32 km) across, but widens to approximately 50 miles (80 km).
In entrance in the Gulf there is series of rocky volcanic islands which according locals are monumental lava bombs from cataclysmic Cosigüina Volcano eruption in 1835 which was the biggest volcanic eruption in Central America in human history.
While sailing across the strait between Nicaragua and El Salvador it was obvious that islands of size big enough to accommodate military base could hardly be erupted from volcano eruption – even as large as Cosigüina’s 1835. Since islands are in line of volcanoes parallel with Cocos Plate boundary which subducting under Central America Caribbean Continental Plate, it is probable that islands are remnants of volcano in the middle of the Gulf of Fonseca which was gradually eroded.
Whatever the true geological explanation is – sailing across the Gulf and around the islands with Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras background was one of the greatest panoramic views of my “Expedition Nicaragua 2018”.
Enjoy
Jiri

EL SALVADOR: AID OPERATION MOUNTED ON POVERTY STRICKEN ISLANDS
Spanish/Nat
In a joint effort by the Salvadoran and U-S military, the poverty-stricken islands and coastline of the Gulf of Fonseca received much needed medical aid last week.
The region, which belongs to El Salvador, is home to some six thousand people, but only one clinic services the population.
The aid operation also included extensive medical training to give local people the skills to improve their own health system.
The U-S Navy, in collaboration with El Salvador, has invested over 35 million (m) U-S dollars in providing aid to the impoverished area.
The medical brigade of the Salvadoran army and medical experts from the Seventh Battalion of the country's Special Forces arrived here last week.
They were joined by 13 medical staff from the U-S military group and personnel from the U-S Departments of Health, Agriculture and Husbandry.
The 6 day operation ended on Monday.
The region comprising the islands of Meanguera, Conghaguita and Perico and the coastal area, Barrancones, is governed by El Salvador.
Although electricity and telephone cables reached the island in 1992, sanitary levels are poor.
Many inhabitants lack clean water and a proper drainage and sewage system is yet to be installed.
Most depend on fishing and small scale agriculture to make a living.
Poverty levels are high, and the incidence of chronic disease- especially among young children- is on the increase.
But with only one clinic and limited medical staff to meet the populations needs, islanders are forced to travel to the mainland- a two hour boat journey- to receive medical care.
The expedition was greeted with relief by local residents.

It's helping the community a lot because there are those who can't go to a doctor's office and now they have the opportunity so it has benefited the poor people.

The aim of the operation was also to provide local people with the skills needed to be able to treat diseases locally.
Medical aid groups held discussion forums and gave lectures on preventative health care including dietary and food hygiene issues.
The expedition ended on Monday, and provided a variety of medical services, targeting young children, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.
But the population as a whole all received general health and dental check ups.
Veterinary checks up were also carried out, and farmers given anti- parasitic drugs and vitamins to treat their livestock.
At the end of the operation local residents expressed their gratitude in a small ceremony where military officers were awarded medals for their efforts.

There is no other activity that could give us more pleasure than to help people, because it gives us immediate satisfaction.

The region's geographical location also makes it susceptible to natural disasters due to extreme weather conditions.
Disasters such as flooding and hurricanes can greatly increase the spread of disease if water supplies are contaminated.
The aid operation has therefore also been a useful training exercise for the Salvadoran military, in the event of a disaster occurring in the region in the future.
