Jagannath Mandir Puri Odisha - Rath Yatra | Neel Madhava | Gundicha Temple
relizian.com VIDEO 7 (History and Legend Series): Shree Jagannath Temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath | Balabhadra (Balram) | Goddess Subhadra. Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra 2018. Lord Jagannath Visit Gundicha Temple in Ashadh. Bahuda Rath Yatra starts from Gundicha Temple to Puri Temple. VIP Darshan are allowed.
The Jagannath Temple is one of the sacred Vaishnava pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Form of Krishna), which is located on the eastern coast of India at Puri, Odisha. This is an important pilgrimage destination of Lord Shri Krishna and one of the char dham pilgrimage to visit in one's lifetime. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was attracted by Lord Jagannath and lived in Puri for many years.
Temple is known by many names as Puri temple, the Srimandira, the Baba deua or Jagannath temple. Puri Temple is one of the tallest monuments in the entire, sub-continent of India. The height of temple is about 214 feet from the ground level. Temple is built on a site of 10 acres and bounded by two walls. An outer wall is known as Maghananda Pracira and inner wall is known as Kurma Pracira. The current temple architecture is beautifully craved with lovely sculpture in Kalinga style. The temple is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. There are gates in north, south, west and east directions and namely as elephant gates, the horse gate, the tiger gate (known as Khanja Gate) and lion gate respectively. After crossing the main gate, immediately you find yourself on flight of steps which is locally called Baisi Pahaca which means twenty two steps. Devotees walk on the steps with piritual belief.
Bhog and Ananad Bazar ( Bajar)
There is traditional belief that Lord Vishnu takes his bath in Rameswaram, meditates at Badrinath, dines at Puri and retires in Dwarka. Therefore, there is significance of maha prashad in puri and treated as Anna Brahma.
As we cross the main entrance on the east side, on the left hand side you will find a vast area of temple kitchen which is the biggest hotel of the world. Within two or three hours, it can feed more than one lakh devotees. Food preparation process is more hygienic and traditional. There is Ananad bajara known as food selling market.
Maha prashad is cooked only in earthen pots and medium of cooking is fire wood only. The steam cooked food first offer to Lord Jagannath and then to Bimaladevi and hence, it becomes mahaprasad. Devotees can enjoy this mahaprasad without considering caste or creed. Mahaprasad items include cooked rice, dal, vegetable curry, sweet dishes etc. When Mahaprasad is carried to Lord Jagannath in an earthen pot, no smell emanates from the food and when the same food is carried back for devotees at sale points, delicious smell surprises the devotees. Thousands of devotees purchase and eat Mahaprasad together forgetting their caste and status.
Devotees can carry dry Prasad known as Khaja which stays fresh for days together. Another dried rice Mahaprasad known as Nirmalya, is used by devotees and visitors.
Temple allows only orthodox Hindus to enter into the temple, while other pilgrims are allowed from the top of the Emar Matha building which is located near the east facing gate of the temple.
Lord Jagannath is Siva for Saivite, Ganpati for a Ganapatya, Kalika for a Skata and so on and so forth. It represents the integration of all the important Hindu culture including the Vedic, the Puranic and the Vaisanava along with Jainism and Buddhism.
Nabakalebara
Jagannath Temple is famous for rath yatra or chariot festival, when the three main deities are placed on huge decorated temple cars in the month of June-July. The image of Lord Jagannath is made from wood, while other Hindu deities worshipped are in made from stone or metal. Every twelve or nineteen years, wooden images are replaced with the exact replicas which are carved using special sacred margosa tree. Wooden objects need to be changed after certain periods of time. So, the idol of Jagannatha requires a changeover to new body normally after twelve years. The process of change over ceremony is known as Nava Kalevara. The shortest period is eight years and longest period is nineteen years. Numbers of steps are taken by the temple administrative to celebrate this festival in traditional manner.
Specific person including the daitas is deputed from the temple at Puri to the Mangala temple in Kakatapur village to implore the mercy of the said goddess, so they would be able to find out the best margosa trees. There are number of specifications checked such as in environment, location, height and age of the trees. Once trees are selected a small ritual including homa takes place and it is brought to the temple.
