Gunnedah - Koala Capital of The World
We're proud to be home to one of the largest and healthiest Koala colonies in the world. You can travel to Gunnedah on any budget, and stay anywhere from 4 star motel accommodation to a caravan park. There's a rural museum, a historical museum, arts & crafts, bushwalking, camping ... Nip out to Lake Keepit for some fishing, sailing, water-skiing or gliding at the soaring club. The landscape is striking with hills dotted around on through the sweeping plains -- the landscape that inspired Dorothea Mackellar to pen My Country.
Moree Up 4---Baan Baa-Gunnedah HD
In April 2007, the Sydney bound Xplorer, having left Moree that morning, last safe-working stop Turrawan, south of Narrabri, runs through the level crossing at Baan Baa at speed, passes the Boggabri coal loop, stops for passengers at Boggabri and for the staff at Emerald Hill, then passes the coal stage outside Gunnedah, the old abattoir and flour mill before rolling into Gunnedah station, where shunters wait for it to pass before resuming their work with the Manildra Group flour wagons.
The level crossing at Baan Baa features lights, bells and barriers, in a tiny village, while major crossings over highways have no boom gates. This is because in May 2004 a car across the rail line derailed the Down Moree Xplorer and killed the car driver. The lead car of the train stopped, on its side, over 400 metres beyond the crossing. The northwestern railway was closed for three days. In a typical over-reaction, the government slowed down all trains in NSW to a maximum of 120 kph, as if that would make any difference when hitting a stationary vehicle, and installed superfluous boom gates and lights at the hamlet of Baan Baa while all up and down this and other lines across the state remain half-controlled or uncontrolled level crossings.

Detecting Coal Fields and Saw Mills Buried In A Rain Forest
This little bit of Wilderness has 1440 acres of the old coal field which had a mine shaft at top of the mountain go down to meet a shaft that came in from a river gorge below. Two saw mills went into operation to both supply the coal mine and to export timber. All this fury of activity went on between 1901 and 1926,then the area was abandoned.
Local history text describes how due to the steepness of the terrain that literally when the mining company went broke they left all the equipment behind and walked away.
This time i got the car as far into forest as i could, found some evidence of coal on the roadside and then began the hike up the mountain through the rain forest.
Teknetics T2 detector set to all metal mode with the aim to dig all targets, the more iron i dig the more likely the chance i am near a major site like the mills or one of the 26 homes that used to house families of the workers.

WW1 Fromelles - Cobbers - Stuart Curry
During the Great War Four members of my family fought at Fromelles on the 19/20th July 1916. Both my Grandfathers and brothers survived one of Australia's worst battles in military history. Standing here at Cobbers was very touching for me knowing what could have happen to my family.

Sponsor a Convict Sleepover program at Hyde Park Barracks Museum
Join Telarah Public School students and their teachers as they take part in the Unlocking Heritage Convict Sleepover, an immersive overnight excursion where they eat convict inspired meals, play convict games and take a lantern lit tour of the museum before settling down for the night in the hammock room where convicts slept 200 years ago. With the assistance of the Unlocking Heritage pilot project, 3,000 students and their teachers from 100 primary schools in regional and rural NSW took part in this fully subsidised excursion between July 2015 and June 2017. SLM Foundation is now looking for corporate sponsors to revive this program in 2018 for disadvantaged primary schools in remote areas of NSW.
