Gunnuhver is the largest geothermal field on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The name derives from the legend of a poor woman named Gudrun.
That woman lived near the village Sanderdi, whose owner was a lawyer Vilhjálmur Jonsson. When Gunn had from which to pay the rent, Vilhjálmur took her only property - kettle for cooking. The woman fell into a frenzy of rage, she refused to drink holy water and died. On the way to the cemetery, the men carrying the coffin, they noticed that it has become suspiciously light, and digging the grave of the people heard the voice, You do not have to dig too deep. I'm not going to lie long. Soon the entire peninsula began to be haunted, ghost Gudrun threatened and harassed locals, while living near the priest Eirikkur Magnusson not pledged to trap him, and through the ruse did not imprison him in a geyser .. Reportedly, these events took place over 300 years ago and notes about Gudrun can be found in the list of Arnie Magnusson from 1703.
After all still believe that bubbling and hissing from the earth is really moaning condemned Gudrun and that the get victims who too licked off the geyser by wearing a cloud of poisonous gas, which after a while melts together with imprisoned in the souls.
In Gunnuhver can observe countless holes in the ground, in the air ejection cloud of gases, and the pool of boiling mud, which give the place gloomy climate.
The explanation of the phenomenon of the place is as interesting as the above legend. Located beneath the earth's surface magma heats seeping through the cracks and port rock sea water, which then evaporates under pressure, bringing to the surface of the earth. Are each other minerals, including a lot of sulfur and sodium chloride.
Walk allow wooden bridges. This is the heart of planned future geo-park, which is an area within which there are important and unique from the geological point of view position.
How to get to the Gunnuhver?
To reach the cliffs Valahnukur, we follow the road 425 valahnukur-klifyjadąc coast from the town hafnir toward Grindavíku, pass the geothermal power station and exit to the lighthouse Reykjanesviti, after a few hundred meters, suggesting a sign, turn right on gravel road leading to the parking lot at Gunnuhver.

Gunnuhver Hot Springs, Iceland
Gunnuhver hot springs, Reykjanes (south west Iceland). Scary and mysterious alien scenery of this impressive geothermal active area that, it is said, is ihabited by the spirit of a ghost woman, a witch from the past.
The hot springs, mud pools and steam vents on the southwest part of Reykjanes, close to Reykjanes lighthouse, are named Gunnuhver after a ghost woman that was laid there. She had caused great disturbance until a priest set a trap for her and she fell into the spring. This happend about 400 years ago.
The mud pools form where steam from boiling geothermal resevoir water emanates and condenses and mixes with surface water. Accompanying gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide make the water acid. This causes alteration of the fresh lava rock to clay.
Iceland´s larges mud pool at present prominent, highest up in the Gunnuhver group. It is 20 meters wide across a rim of mud, boiling vigorously.

The geothermal area Krýsuvík is situated on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. It is in the south of Reykjanes in the middle of the fissure zone on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which traverses Iceland.
Krýsuvík consists of several geothermal fields, such as Seltún. Here have formed solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs, the soil is colored in bright yellow, red and green hues.
