Gunthorpe to Newark Canal Boat Timelapse
Broad Waterways 1960 from the Trent Vale Partnership
This is an edited version of a film made in 1960 to show how British Waterways were upgrading their broad waterways for more commercial traffic. At that time the container revolution had not really started, but within ten years container ports including inland container ports enabled goods to tranship quickly and without all the handling shown here.
In 1960 coal accounted for half the tonnage shipped on our waterways. But tyranny of coal, which had driven our industrial revolution, was almost over and although some oil and gas still goes by barge it can also use pipelines, railways and roads.
So what has happened to our Broad Waterways such as the River Trent, featured in this film? There is still some commercial traffic, mainly aggregates, but much of he Trent is now used by pleasure craft , fishermen and folk who like the peace of walking besides the river, either with or without their dogs. But there is more to be had from the River, once the central focus of the communities along it. Find out more by visiting the Trent Vale Partnership web site at

Newark Lock
A short film of some boating action at Newark Lock. My thanks to the people featured who all gave permission for the drone to fly in their vicinity. Unfortunately, some great shots of a narrow boat going through the lock did not survive.

12: Where can we leave Lou’s narrowboat for 2 weeks?!
Lou, one of my top patreon supporters, heading up the Crank It Crew, with her lurcher dog Maeve - is doing amazingly and still set on getting her boat to its mooring in Sheffield. I’m joining her once again to help her get cranking!
Come with us as we venture out onto one of the largest rivers in the UK, experience some huge locks, and beautiful scenery from Gunthorpe to Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire.
Marina cost was £60 per week.

Do you know the dangers of river weirs?
We are urging river users in the North West to look out for flashing warning lights for their own safety as the Environment Agency monitors river levels to help protect communities from flooding.
Our Hydrometry & Telemetry team are often called out to measure river levels when the water is at its highest, enabling them to issue flood warnings to communities in danger.
However, recently they have spotted canoeists and other boat users putting themselves in unnecessary danger, ignoring flashing warning signs and coming close to heavy duty measuring equipment deployed in the water.
View our Flickr album that allows river users to compare online river level guides to actual photos of weirs to assess if it is safe to use the river.
