The Trail (from Janda Baik)
Arrive at the trailhead early as the hike can easily take up a whole day (7-10 hours).
The first two kilometres lead through farmland and along a farm road before you enter the jungle in earnest.
The trail is moderately difficult, getting pretty steep as you approach the summit. The clay soil is generally fine, but becomes treacherous when wet. There is a small technical section just before the summit.
Along the way there are several small streams to navigate so hiking boots are recommended over running shoes.
Travel Logistics
Janda Baik is around a 60-minute drive from central Kuala Lumpur (depending on traffic).
Getting to the trailhead by public transport is not easy, so if you don’t have a car, then a Grab taxi is another option. They are very cheap in Malaysia.
There are accommodation, parking and basic toilet facilities at the trailhead.
Officially you need a permit to climb Gunung Nuang from Janda Baik, although the process is complicated and lengthy so many people do not bother.
More information about permits can be found here (
I made the trip with Singapore-based travel agent SG Trek ( who organised everything including transport, permit, guides and food (for the trek only).
Drones
There are no known restrictions on the use of drones around Gunung Nuang, although tree cover means the trailhead area and the summit are the only places where it is practical to fly. Bad weather (strong winds and mist) prevented me from filming.

20171210 Mount Nuang~Hiking in Malaysia
Mount Nuang is situated in the Hulu Langat district of Selangor state with the height of 1,493 metres. it is the 3rd highest peak after Gunung Semangkok and Gunung Ulu Kali.
Many reviews said that it is harder than climbing Mount Kinabalu. I started from 6am and finished at 4pm. The start of the trail is around 200m above sea level. It was really a gruelling and strenuous trip to go up and down 23 kilometers in one day.
Hulu Tamu Hot Spring
The Hulu Tamu hot spring is near Batang Kali. It offers a peaceful green environment for one to unwind. Suitable for family outing and picnics. There are chalets around the area from RM80 to RM150. An entrance fee of RM3 is charged for adults while children are allowed in free of charge. There is no charge if one wishes to just have a look around the area and not planning to dip into the water. HIKING MALAYSIA: Gunung Datuk sunrise and traditional Malay food in Malacca
While Gunung Datuk in Malaysia may not be high (855m) it does offer a spectacular sunrise and superb views over the peninsular and Straits of Malacca. Join Richard and the SG Trek crew as they get a 4am start to knock off another peak before spending a relaxing afternoon in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Malacca.

The Trail
The Gunung Datuk trail is like many other Malaysian paths as it features a lot of tree roots and orange, clay-like soil.
From the trailhead hut to the summit is only around 2.5km, but there is one extremely steep section around 30 minutes in that requires some scrambling and rope work.
The trail levels out afterwards and after around 2 hours you should reach a large rest area below the rocky summit from where everyone likes to watch the sunrise.
Scaffolding has been erected to enable hikers to climb up the rocks replacing ladders and ropes that were there previously.
The boulders top out at 710m but the official height of Datuk is 855m and there is another higher summit although not many venture that way.
Travel Logistics
Datuk is around a 4-hour drive from Singapore once across the border or a 1-hour drive south from Kuala Lumpur.
Getting there by public transport is possible, taxis will drop you off at the trailhead from the nearby towns of Tampin or Rembau.
A climbing permit (5 Ringgit) is required for Datuk and this can be purchased at the trailhead office. If you climb early the office will be closed, but you can buy it on the way down.
I made the trip with Singapore-based travel agent SG Trek, who organised everything including transport and guides. (
Drones
There are no known restrictions on the use of drones around Gunung Datuk.

Waterfalls of Malaysia - Lepoh Fall, Hulu Langat
Just another day at one of Malaysia's waterfalls.
1st attempt to make pasta and failed. :)
And found an iPhone & shades in the falls.
Upon arriving the fall site, we found many leftover thrash. It's quite disappointed to know that those people that left it there really don't give a fuck about it.
Whatever you bring in, bring back out!

PhatBoys Hiking to Jeram Perlus
Jeram Perlus, a less than popular waterfall haven can be accessed via Langat Dam (2.5hrs) or Sungai Gabai (4hrs). Though we took the former route, a technical glitch (more like guide glitch :P) brought us off course for over 5 hours.
The area is also known as Hutan Pacat for the sheer density of pacat population. How'd they breed this much when no one's around? That got me asking.
Seeing the beautiful nature negated all physical and mental exhaustion. It was well worth it.
