It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, described as having influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries and reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature.

Tour of Guo's Villa (Hangzhou's West Lake)
Guo's Villa or Guo Zhuang / 郭庄 or 郭庄景点 is the best existing traditional private residence in Hangzhou. It was first built in late Qing Dynasty in 1851 and opened to the public in 1991, after being restored.
With a mountain in the back and the west lake in the front, the garden is known as 'Number One Garden of the West Lake' thanks to its tranquil environment, well-preserved buildings, and tasteful landscaping layout. The key feature, or spirit, is water. Cleaverly juxtaposing shade and light, curved and straight, yin and yang, the garden of Guo Zhuang is a wonderful embodiment of the Chinese wisdom of Taoism and the Way of Nature.
Guo's Villa faces Spring Dawn, by the Sudi Causeway which crosses the West Lake, and has a distant view of the serene Southern Screen Hill and the Baochu Pagoda.
The villa has two sections: (1) Living in Quietness, where the owner lived, (2) the Sky in the Mirror garden, with a pond surrounded by roofed corridors (lang), bridges, rockwork, trees and flowers.

Hangzhou West Lake's Yue Fei Temple / 岳王庙
The Yue Fei Temple / 岳王庙 or commonly known in Chinese as Yuewang Temple / 岳王廟 is a temple built in honour of Yue Fei, a general of the Southern Song dynasty who fought against the Jurchen Jin Dynasty during the Jin–Song wars, after the capital of China moved south to Hangzhou. The temple ground is located near the West Lake, in central Hangzhou.

The temple was first constructed during the Song Dynasty in 1221 to commemorate Yue Fei. The site includes Yue Fei's Temple, Loyalty Temple and Yue Fei’s Mausoleum inside. The temple was reconstructed several times in later date. The tombs and the tomb sculptures in the temple all date from the 12th century, and have been meticulously restored.

HANGZHOU - Tea House & West Lake
“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” ― E. Welty
With our China tour slowly coming to an end, we prepared ourselves to relish the experiences that today’s adventures in Hangzhou offered. Our morning started with our bus weaving through the picturesque terraced tea-plantations of the Meijiawu Tea Culture Village. Prior to us arriving at the charming Tea House, our knowledgeable tour guide (a green tea connoisseur himself) described the process the farmers use to produce the fragrant West Lake Dragon Well Tea. At the Tea House a qualified tea expert explained and demonstrated the processes for picking, drying and grading the leaves. She also amazed everyone with a ‘magical’ chemical demonstration that emphasized the health benefits of green leaf tea. And, of course we all got the opportunity to sample and purchase some high-grade tea leaves and other goodies. Michael’s sweet tooth didn’t allow him to leave the Tea House without buying a couple of packets of delicious green tea lollies!
Back on the bus for a short drive to the most popular place in Hangzhou - West Lake. This beautiful fresh water lake located in the middle of the city is the subject of many poems and paintings. Utterly mesmerising with the pagoda-topped hills rising over willow-lined waters and stunning temples, pavilions, gardens and bridges surrounding it. There were many kinds of boats, including large painted boats and small rowing boats that drifted along the lake. An aura of romance was added to our boat trip as Joe told us the legendary story originating in West Lake …. isn’t love grand!
After our lake cruise we had some time to ourselves for arranging lunch and strolling around the nearby shops. We then wandered back to the bus and admired the beautiful tree-lined streets and stunning parks with manicured garden beds. Then it was all aboard for our scenic 2hr bus ride to Shanghai.
The scenery was remarkable! We goggled at the vast rice fields and sprawling farmlands interwoven with impressive farm houses. The dense high-rise apartment buildings extended towards the horizon (as far as the eye could see) and all of this was intertwined with an abundance of cranes signalling further development and construction.
As we neared Shanghai, we took a moment to reflect on our day’s adventures (so far) and agreed that the picturesque scenery was nothing short of SPECTACULAR!
Time to hit the road!

Walking Hangzhou's West Lake Causeways / 西湖
West Lake / 西湖 is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou divided into five sections by three causeways. There are numerous temples, pagodas, gardens and artificial islands within the lake.
At the beginning of the Song dynasty's Yuanyou era (1086–1094), another great poet, Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo), came to Hangzhou to serve as its governor. At that time, the farmers suffered greatly drought again, due to overgrowth of the weeds at the bottom of the lake clogging the irrigation ducts. He ordered dredging of the lake and piled up all the mud into another causeway, in the style of Bai Causeway, but much wider and nearly three times as long: he also planted willow trees along its banks. This causeway was later named after him as the Su Causeway. There are six bridges along the 2.6 km Su Causeway (蘇堤), and they are called separately Yingbo(映波),Suolan(锁澜),Wangshan(望山),Yadi(压堤),Dongpu(东浦),Kuahong(跨虹) Bridge, which all symbolize the characteristics of the bridge itself and also expose the structural beauty and its colorful connotation. Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring 蘇堤春曉 is one of the attractions.
A Ming dynasty dredging project extended the water surface from west of Su Causeway to Hongchun Bridge and Mao Jia Bu. The excavated silt was used to broaden Su Causeway, and also used to build a long causeway in western Inside Lake, called Yanggong Causeway (楊公堤).
