LEAD IN :
The Chinese communist party and nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party fought two civil wars for control of the Chinese mainland between 1927-1936 and 1946-1949.
Those civil wars were interrupted, when both parties joined forces to fight Japanese invaders during World War 2.
The truce and cooperation lasted for 8 years, from 1937 to 1945.
The KMT lost the second civil war with the communists and many sought refuge on the island of Taiwan which still remains separate from the mainland.
However over fifty years later some of the surviving veterans of those wars are hoping to be recognised as war veterans by the Chinese government and receive some economic aid in their final years.
STORYLINE:
Hu Zi Kun is an eighty-two year old veteran of the two civil wars between the Chinese Nationalists (KMT) and the communists and also the war with the Japanese when the opposing Chinese forces fought side by side.
Hu fought for the losing side, the KMT.
Over half a century later he still regularly visits the graves of his old comrades in the town of Guo shang, in Teng chong county, in China's southern Yunnan province.
Sixty years ago he and his friends fought against the Japanese here in Yunnan province.
More than 6000 soldiers dead during the battle, two thirds of Hu's regiment were killed.
After the second civil war in 1945-1949, the KMT were defeated and the Communist party took power in China.
