Gurez Valley IN KASHMIR | Border Between India and Pakistan
Gurez, or Gurais, is a valley located in the high Himalayas, about 86 kilometres from Bandipore and 123 kilometres from Srinagar in northern Kashmir and southern Gilgit-Baltistan. At about 8,000 feet above sea level, the valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
Gurez Valley Kashmir
Gurez or Gurais (Guráai in the local Shina language) is a valley located in the high Himalayas, about 86 kms from Bandipore and 123 kms from Srinagar in northern Jammu and Kashmir. At about 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level, the valley is surrounded by snow capped mountains. The Kishanganga River flows through the valley. The road to Gilgit runs through Gurez. Gurez is divided into three regions. The area from Toabat to Sharda Peeth is administered by Pakistan as Neelum District, that between Kamri and Minimarg is part of the Astore District, Northern Areas, Pakistan, and that from Toabat to Abdullae Tulail is known as Tehsil Gurez, and is part of Bandipore district. People of Gurez valley are Dards, they speak Sheena language and have their ancestral connection with Gilgit valley now in Pakistan. The feature and attire of the Dards are similar to Kashmiri people of mountain region. Though Gurez is a far flung area but the people of the Dard race have uplifted themselves by the hard work and proper education. Dard women are fair with athletic built, who spend the summer in collecting wood from mountains for the harsh winter; when it is impossible to move in 20 feet out side. Ultimate adventure destination to the north of Kashmir, Gurez, is a gateway to the famous silk route across central Asia. Due to heavy snowfall in winter, (approx. 6-7 fts)the valley remains cut off for six months of the year. Gurez's most formidable peak is Habba Khatoon, around which legends abound. This pyramid shaped peak was named after the Kashmiri poet Habba Khatoon. She was a beautiful and intelligent woman from Saffron village chandhara, and originally known as Zoon (which means Moon in English). She was the daughter of a peasant Abuddi Rather, who married her to an illiterate peasant boy named Habba. Zoon was ill-treated by her mother-in-law and husband, because she spent most of her time in poetry and singing. Dejected by her plight, she changed her name to Habba Khatoon.
The emperor of Kashmir, Yousuf Shah Chak, was enthralled by her beauty, intelligence and poetry. He arranged her divorce from Habba and married her. According to the story, Shah Chak was imprisoned by his rival King Akbar, Habba Khatoon used to wander near the peak that now bears her name to look for her lover. After her husband's death, she wandered the banks of river Jhelum in mourning. She died twenty years later by drowning into the jhelum and now her tomb is at Athwajan
The roar of mighty Kishan-Ganga river flowing across the valley, resonates with surrounding mountains that lulls a visitors to sound sleep. The traditional log wood houses make Gurez no less than a European country side. The trekking Routes from Gurez and Tilel lead upto Gangabal and Sonmarg to its east and Drass , Dahanu and Zanskar to its north.. Gurez has lovely campsites where the tents can be pitched near the river.
Stay:
Guest houses of JKTDC
3-4 home stays are also there.
Network:

Permission:
You just need to carry your Aadhar card with you, that will be enough to let you pass through 4 heavily guarded Army check posts for entering Gurez.
Best Time to Visit :
May to October
Reaching Gurez:
6-7 hours journey from Srinagar, 4-5 hours from Bandipora.Sharing tata sumo from Bandipora.Road condition from Razdan pass to gurez is in very bad condition ,so its better to start early to reach Gurez before sunset, as it will be very difficult to drive in dark in those roads.Gurez has only one fuel station, so better to fill in bandipora only.
Helicopter service: State government has introduced helicopter service to Gurez for locals and tourists to promote its tourism potential. The tickets are available at the TouristCounter at airport and also at Tourist Reception Center Srinagar. But you need to be at least 5 persons to avail this service.

YES, It is SAFE to travel SOLO in Kashmir | Gurez Valley | Episode 1
Hey guys! Most of you know me from instagram ( and I thought I'd finally fulfil your wishes by trying my hands on vlogging and so, here is my first vlog.
Before stepping out of my house, my father had warned me, my mother was freaking out and my friends were uncertain about me being in Kashmir by myself. To break that taboo, I decided that I really needed to experience Kashmir alone. So, I went ahead and took the plunge and trust me when I say this, I wasn't disappointed at all. I travelled to Gurez Valley which is 120 kms north of Srinagar and falls under the Southern GIlgit-Baltistan region of the country. Every village is lined by barbed wires; Pakistan is only kilometres away. The beautiful Kishenganga river flows throughout the valley making the landscape look as jaw dropping as it gets.
People in Gurez do not associate themselves with Kashmir. They speak Shina and in actuality originate from the Balitstan region divided between India and Pakistan. The mindsets, viewpoints and their lifestyle is totally different from the rest of Jammu and Kashmir.
This vlog takes you through my experiences in Gurez while I was by myself, the picture perfect sceneries and the ever so warm Gurezis.
