Walk Okinawa along Gusuku Road in Tamagusuku Apr 17, 2019
My 2019 Trip Back to Okinawa included many walks. One, for exercise. Two, to add to my collection of walking vids that I use during the winter when it's too nsty cold in Montana to get outside for long walks. I play these vids on the big screen in front of my treadmill!

Chinen Peninsula, Okinawa 1988 or 89
First things first - Chinen is in the SOUTHEAST, not the southwest as I said while filming. My bad.
These videos were made for sending home to my folks while I was on island.
In the course of re-tooling the website I am trying to eliminate a bunch of the old 1990s-vintage
coding and especially focusing on the Scrapbook which is admittedly a mess. I want to retain the
images from the old days though and in doing so have created this Legacy Series. I can't bring
myself to throw away those old photos so I think this is the best way to keep 'em in storage! I have
included the commentary that I provided on the original pages verbatim. Those comments reflect my
understanding of what the photos represented at that time. In time my entire website will be a legacy!
In addition to the photos that I've salvaged from the Scrapbook the Legacy Series will include my old
home movies (Super-8 in the 1970s) and 3rd generation copies of VHS and 8mm video from the '80s-1990.
Chinen Castle Ruins: Walking Through The Site [Limited Editing]
Chuu uganabira! My name is Kathryn and I have been living on the beautiful island of Okinawa for almost a decade. I spend most of my time immersing myself in the culture, learning about the history of the island and way of life past and present. In 2011 I decided to start sharing my experiences here on YouTube to offer newcomers and those interested in the island the perspective of someone who has been living here long term. Breakfast this a.m. is a mini-bento and veggie salad from the supermarket next door! Still early in the morning so I looked through the hotel guide book. Check out the couple of pages I took pictures warning us of jelly fish, snakes, etc. At 9:15 a.m., I told the front desk guy I wanted to walk to the AEON Mall and he said going take 20 minutes so go catch the bus! Geeeez. So I walked and took pictures along the way. I got to the Mall at 9:45 a.m. -- took me a lazy 30-minutes from hotel to the Mall. I got there too early so I had to wait 15 minutes. Met “M & J” there. This is Chinese New Years weekend so they all kinds of specials. Took a look around for 30 minutes and had enough so we left. Jumping in “M’s” car I took pictures of the hi-tech parking spaces. Each stall is monitored and lights up a status light overhead. Can you guess where they have an open stall?
We went the street a bit and ended up at a playground. Some times “M & J” walk around the track for exercise. “J” goes swimming at the pool about twice a week. Today they had the annual Okinawa City Festival. So we walked around the stalls. Wow, lots of onolicious food stuffs. There was a wrestling ring set up for a 12:00 p.m. contest so I entered “S-boy’s” name on the list to beef the 300-pounder. Kekekeke I had enough of looking at stuffs so we jumped in the car then we headed south. Went to the Yuinchi Hotel Nanjo which is an onsen complex and got in line for lunch. The guy said the buffet wait is 30-minutes so I said, a buffet is a waste for me as I only want a mini dish. So, we left, drove some more and got to a place east of Naha. Yep, that was a long drive! We ended up across the street from the Ryukyu Golf Course. “M” goes there once-in-a-while and then goes to this restaurant, CR which stands for Charlie’s Restaurant. I got a bowl of curry rice. ONO! If you look on the wall, you’ll see those 12” x 12” posters. These are autographs left by pro golfers for the restaurant. Took a drive up to the golf club house and we headed back for another long drive back to Kitanakagusuku. Visited “M’s” hobby patch. He grows things for fun and just gives them away. Papayas, potatoes, lychees, mangoes, bananas, onions, flowers cabbage, Hawaiian taro and more. I oughta teach him how to pound his Hawaiian taro into POI! Kekekeke We were gonna stop at the AEON Mall for coffee but the line to get into the parking lot was too long so we ended up in a neighborhood A & W for coffee. They have parking lot machines where you can shout in your orders and they will deliver your order out to the car. We went inside and talked story for a while and then I went back to my hotel to get ready for dinner.
Went dinner to the Ishimatsu Restaurant in the Awase district.
Yesterday, I forgot about an interesting experience. After viewing the cherry blossoms, we went east of Nago to Futami. While driving on this special road, I thought I heard music. Then thought my head and ears were playing tricks. Turns out that they tune the roughness of the road so the tire noises create music. Really neat! “M” said there are 2 places he knows has this capability. The other one is on the road someplace around Mount Fuji.
This is PAU for this trip. Laterz.
Gyokusendo bj11.mov
Gyokusendo in the Tamagusuku district.
Widely known as a mysterious limestone cave, it is a prominent destination for sightseeing in Okinawa and is visited by many tourists daily.
There are said to be over one million stalactites in Gyokusendo.
The high temperature and humid tropical climate are a factor in the stalactites comparatively fast growth rate of one millimeter every three years, and leads to the creation of this unique underground world.
