Latvia, Gutmanis Cave. Exploring Sigulda, Part 3
Latvia. Gutmanis Cave lies halfway between Sigulda Castle and Turaida Castle and has a small stream flowing from it. It is the largest cave in the Baltics. The cave still bears inscriptions from as early as the 17th century; drinking the water is supposed to be healthy and is said to increase one's lifespan. My travel vlog: Trip to Latvia.

Gutmana Cave, Sigulda, Latvia (Gūtmaņa ala) (Пещера Гутманя)
Cave Gutmana ( latysh. Gūtmaņa ala) - the largest cave in Latvia ( and the Baltic States ) , located on the right bank of the river Gauja Gauja National Park , near the town of Sigulda.
The cave walls are built of red sandstone , formed in the Devonian period (about 410 million years ago) . It follows from the cave creek, which empties into the river Gauja .
The depth of the cave is 18.8 meters long, 12 meters long and 10 meters. The area of the cave is 170 square meters and a volume of 500 cubic meters.
Its walls ( as the surrounding rocks , slopes , and other surrounding caves and cliffs ) are filled with graffiti left by visitors for many centuries. These walls are made of thick red sandstone was formed in the Devonian period , more than 400 years ago millionoov .
It follows from the cave clean and cold stream, which flows into the Gauja River , which flows nearby.
As for romance, according to one version , in ancient times , the leader of the Liv named Rindaug told the rock wall up to a beautiful but unfaithful wife , who did not wait for him to war. Immured wife wept bitterly , her tears formed a clean stream, which is then gnawing cave.
The most famous legend - the legend of the Maya , known as the Rose of Turaida . However , the cave Turaida Rose - a single small cave , located close to the cave Gutmana , a couple of meters above.
The story is also about the healer Gutmane (Gutermann - from the German good man ), who has treated many people with water from the brook . In honor of the cave and called Gutmana .

Turaida castle, Sigulda, Latvia
Turaida castle, Latvia 2018
Turaida Castle (Latvian: Turaidas pils, German: Treiden, Treyden, Russian: Турайдский замок; meaning Thor's garden in Livonian) is a recently reconstructed medieval castle in Turaida, in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, on the opposite bank of the Gauja River from Sigulda.
Building of the castle was started in 1214, upon directions given by Albert, Archibishop of Riga to his Livonian Brothers of the Sword (soon to merge with the Teutonic Order) at the place where previously had stood the wooden castle of Liv. A 'castellum' type fortress was built and named Fredeland, which translates as 'Land of Peace', but became better known locally by the Livonian name of 'Turaida', which has survived until the present day. The castle was constructed largely in the classic red-brick construction of the Baltic crusading orders. Improving the castle's defensive system continued in later centuries, and in the 14th century, the tower shaped southern section was built; at the beginning of the 15th century, when fire arms were invented, the semi rounded western tower was built. Domestic buildings and living accommodation were also erected in the inner yard of the castle. Minor reconstruction work was carried out in 17th century although the castle started to lose its strategic importance. After a fire in 1776 it was abandoned and gradually became ruinous.

Gutmanis Cave in Sigulda - the widest and highest sandstone cave in Baltics
This is the oldest tourist attractions in Latvia. The cave contains signs from the 17th century.
Sigulda, Latvia
18th - 19th July 2014
We spent a lot of time walking around Sigulda, especially exploring the castles. The weather was beautiful until the afternoon of the second day. Just as we stepped off the cable car, the rain started, followed by thunder and lightning and even hailstones. The cable car was closed down leaving a group of people stranded. We were stuck there for a long time. Fortunately we were rescued by a man who was waiting for a friend from Serbia to come from the other side of the ravine. He took us and another couple to Turaida castle, where the rain was stopping at last. We saw him there later with his friend who either got the cable car when it opened again, or, more likely, got picked up on the other side with the car.
Turaida will have to be a separate video.
