Great Canadian Parks #14- Gwaii Haanas National Park, B.C
Secluded & storm-swept, the Gwaii Haanas Archipelago is a magical place. The Park is made up of 138 islands in the Queen Charlottes, off the rugged northern coast of B.C. The Haida people call their islands Haida Gwaii; which means a place of wonder. The most significant cultural resource in the park is the mortuary totem poles at Ninstints; declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
Exploring Haida Gwaii
Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is an archipelago off British Columbia’s west coast, in Canada. Wildlife-rich Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site includes remote islands and temperate rainforest.
Haida Gwaii is an incredible remote escape. It's home to dense old growth forest, rugged coastline, and pristine natural beauty. We spent 5 days exploring this incredible island and we easily could have spent 20 more. This is a destination perfect for the outdoorsy adventure seeker. Every corner you turn leads to a unique and breath taking hike, view, or natural wonder.
In this video we highlight some of the incredible experience we had while in Haida Gwaii.
Venture to Haida Gwaii
In July 2011, Venture visited Haida Gwaii, a group of Islands previously called the Queen Charlottes, north of Vancouver Island. Here we spent time in the uninhabited Gwaii Haanas national park which is accessible only by boat or float plane.

landslide in Queen Charlotte, Haida Gwaii , province of British Columbia, Canada
The Village of Queen Charlotte, more commonly known by its residents as Queen Charlotte City or Charlotte, is a village municipality on Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the southern end of Graham Island at Skidegate Inlet and is a member municipality of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District.
It was incorporated in 2005, having previously been represented as part of Electoral Area F of that regional district, which was coterminous with the Queen Charlotte Islands (which now comprises Electoral Areas D and E).
The town site was established when the first sawmill in the archipelago began operating in 1908. In the wake of World War I, additional work force was needed to supply allied warplanes with lumber. The town infrastructure quickly developed, offering public education, a hospital, general stores and other amenities, even a newspaper.
Mining and especially fishing were other sources of employment in Queen Charlotte when the demand for lumber again increased by the second half of the 20th century. Today, many inhabitants are still working in these resource-based jobs but recently a shift towards more tourism-oriented employment has been observed.[3]
Queen Charlotte was incorporated in 2005 and now offers several motels, shops, restaurants, crafts and car repair shops, banks, an RCMP station and a hospital. It is also the location of the Queen Charlotte Visitor Centre, which is open year-round. With its small harbour, Queen Charlotte is often the starting-point for chartered tours into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site on southern Moresby Island.
Queen Charlotte is just 4 km (2.5 mi) to Skidegate with its BC Ferries landing and connections to Prince Rupert.

The Gwaii Haanas Vortex
There is a powerful vortex located near the southern tip of Lyell Island in Haida Gwaii within the national park of Gwaii Haanas.
Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands is located to the north of Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada and consists of two main islands, Graham Island to the north and Moresby Island to the south (where Gwaii Haanas is located).
Lyell Island, the location of the vortex, was the scene of a successful protest against the systematic logging of the islands back in November 1995. Hotspring Island is also found within the immediate vicinity of the vortex being located near the south east coast of Lyell.
The 'harmonics' or energy lines that create the Gwaii Haanas vortex have their beginnings in a lattice or net of energy that surrounds the earth known as the Heptahedral (or Hermes) Grid. The geometry of the relationships between the sun, the earth and the moon and even the centre of our galaxy play a fundamental role in the power of this Grid.
Its unique positioning on the surface of the Earth ensures the island of Haida Gwaii along with other major Earth power places is securely phase locked into the harmonic and resonant beauty of all Creation.
As the Earth moves through her changes we can take steps to help reduce the severity of the effects by our using our own focused, conscious intent for peace for all and especially for the planet that sustains us. Please see for further info on how this can work.

Canada: HaidaGwaii - Queen Charlotte Islands
Decaying Totem Poles at Skidans are visual reminders of the original natives who inhabited the villages in Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) off Canada's west coast. The Haida have inhabited the islands for over 10,000 years and were nearly wiped out in the 19th century by European diseases when traders arrived in the area and infected them with smallpox. Memorial poles are testimony to the culture that once thrived in these islands. Island Community Pride - Skidegate Days, Haida Gwaii, Canada
What perfect weather for Skidegate Days, one of the Queen Charlottes most awaited summer events.
Families, friends and visitors from around the world who happen to find themselves in the viccinity of Skidegate around that time in July, are naturally drawn to this day of festivities and pride, whose ultimate objective is to raise funds for local projects.
Skidegate is one two major Haida communities in the Islands, which have been losing population over the years, especially among the young, who often must look off the Island to find employment opportunities.
Creating more jobs locally and harnessing the potential of the tourism industry, which is increasingly in the spolight, certainly is one of the best possible ways to encourage the people of Haida Gwaii to keep calling the Charlottes home.
When you grow up in this, a most exotic Island paradise on the edge of the continent, making the call to move away is always a heart-wrenching one.

Queen Charlotte is just 4 km (2.5 mi) to Skidegate with its BC Ferries landing and connections to Prince Rupert.
