Gwili Railway - Heritage Steam Train Rides - Carmarthen, South Wales
The Railway:
The Gwili Railway, is a standard gauge steam railway located in the village of Bronwydd, 3 miles north of Carmarthen. Named after the River Gwili, alongside which it runs for 4 miles between Bronwydd Arms, Abergwili Junction and Danycoed, passing through picturesque farmland and steeply wooded hillsides.
The railway follows the original main line between Carmarthen and Aberystwyth and once formed part of a continuous link between North and South Wales.
RSH No. 71516/7170 Welsh Guardsman
Welsh Guardsman was built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn of Newcastle on Tyne in 1944 and was delivered new to the War Department.
In 1947, she was sold to the National Coal Board to work in Northumberland, from where she was then transferred to Cynheidre Colliery near Llanelli. From 1976 until 1980 she was kept as a source of spares at Pontarddulais, before being saved by the Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum.
On arrival at Bronwydd Arms, parts from other locomotives were transferred: the loco has the boiler from Hunslet No. 3822 and the cab and tank of Bagnall No 2758 of 1944.
The locomotive carries its war department number 71516 and was named Welsh Guardsman in a special ceremony at Bronwydd Arms. Following an overhaul at Llangollen the locomotive is now privately owned by Felinfoel Brewery and was rededicated at a ceremony at Bronwydd Arms on 9th June 2014.
History:
The Gwili Steam Railway operates a standard gauge preserved railway from Bronwydd (near Carmarthen) in South Wales along a short section of the former Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway that closed for passenger traffic in 1965, the track being lifted in 1975. The Gwili Railway was formed in 1975 and, by 1978, had purchased and rescued about eight miles of trackbed and was running an initial steam-hauled service on a one-mile section of it.

Gwili Railway, Carmarthenshire (getting up steam since 1961)
Featured in Keira Knightley's film 'The Edge of Love', Gwili Steam Railway is a great piece of history near our Carmarthenshire Holiday Cottages. (qualitycottages.co.uk/carmarthenshire/holiday-cottages-carmarthenshire)
Polly, our roving reporter met with Jeremy, one of the team of incredible volunteers who preserve this standard gauge railway. Jeremys' enthusiasm is infectious. Whether a steam railway fan or not, we are sure his cheerful narrative will draw visitors to its platforms from our holiday cottages in Carmarthenshire.
Quality Cottages short films aim to show those holidaying in Wales the unique things to see and great people to meet. We wish to show the story behind an attraction to add an extra flavour to a visit.
Preservation of this piece of history and the passion for Gwili railway is abundantly clear in Jerermys' narrative.
That's the thing about Wales really, we talk until the cows come home (..) we're very sociable people
The track starts at Bronwydd (near Carmarthen) in South Wales, and travels along a short section of the former Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway line. A steep climb out of Bronwydd village, travels through open fields and wooded hills, hugging the River Gwili all the while. A round trip takes about an hour. You can travel on the train all day for the price of one ticket. There are even opportunities to take a ride on a miniature railway and make use of a beautiful and tranquil picnic spot beside the river. Dogs are allowed to travel on the floor of the train. Round off your trip with a visit to the museum, well stocked shop, station building, signal box and the Gwili Tea Room.
The railways first arrived in Carmarthen in 1860 and can you imagine how people must have felt in those days. I suppose today it would be the equivalent of someone landing from the moon. Says Jeremy.

Gwili Railway, July 2018
Following my visit to Oakwood, and a night in my tent I start off day 2 with a visit to the Gwili Railway, upon my arrival I discover that due to the high fire risk following a spell of hot weather the services are only running on the southern part of the line. Not deterred by this I purchase my ticket and embark on a journey from Bronwydd Arms to Abergwili Junction, a journey of just over a mile.
Although disappointing that i was unable to complete the whole line, I still had an enjoyable journey on the Gwili Railway, and will certainly be aiming to return in the near future to complete the rest of the journey.

My visit to the Gwili Railway
On the 04/10/2017 I visited the Gwili Heritage Railway in South Wales. The line runs for 4.5 miles from Danycoed to Abergwili Junction via Bronwydd Arms. This video features the full journey over the railway starting at Danycoed.
GWILI RAILWAY the DMU on the new south extension
GWILI RAILWAY: Diesel Multiple Unit with members of the preservation society and shareholders on board travels down the southern extension and approaches Bridge 5 which carriies the A485 Lampeter road over the line with a special train on 16 November 2013. After a short stop, it returns to Bronwydd Arms.
Gwili Railway, Part 2, April 2019
After a brief break at Bronwydd Arms we board the heritage DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) for a front seat view of the journey over the 2017 extension to Abergwilli Junction. Upon returning to Bronwydd Arms we watch the unit shunt into the siding, and the steam service passes through non stop en route to Abergwilli Junction. Finally the unit departs the siding, bound for its stabling location at Llwyfan Cerrig as my visit comes to a close.
The journey alongside the river is beautiful, and the Gwili Railway is certainly worth a visit

Gwili Railway's Class 14 in Action. (HD)
Running daily is quite an undertaking for a small volunteer railway but the Gwili decided to try it this year. Having made the decision, the two steam locos went on strike and Jennifer was hired from the Llangollen Railway. I went to film this, but found that Jennifer was not running that day - whether broke or weekly washout I didn't discover. What I got was the Class 14, no. 14901, seen from the temporary platform at Cwmdwyfran, erected for special events.

This heritage line is a standard gauge Steam Railway 3 miles away from Carmarthen. Bronwydd Arms is the departure station for this train ride through picturesque farmland and wooded hillsides. The line follows the original route from Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. In its origin the line was an important link for south and north Wales. We visited the railway on June 5th, 2011.
