[TV ZONE] Gyerim Forest in Gyeongju, a Sacred Forest of the Silla Kingdom
Gyerim Forest in Gyeongju has long been regarded as a sacred place, as it is believed to be the background to the birth myth of Kim Al-ji, the progenitor of the Gyeongju Kim Clan. The forest was originally called Sirim at the time of the foundation of the Silla Kingdom. One day during the reign of King Talhae, a bright beam of light shone out of the forest heralded by a rooster's crowing, and a golden chest was discovered hanging from a tree. The king found a baby boy inside the golden chest and named him Kim Al-ji, and renamed the forest as Gyerim as well. The king made him his crown prince, but Kim yielded the throne to another prince named Pasa. However, Kim Al-ji's descendants eventually ascended to the throne, and ruled the kingdom until its end. A Monument commemorating the birth of Kim Al-ji was erected in the vicinity in 1803 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty).

[TVZONE] Yeongwol Cheongryeongpo which cherishes the sorrow of King Danjong
Cheongryeongpo is located at Gwangcheon-ri, Nam-myon Yeongwol-gun Gangwon Province, in the upstream of the Namhan River. Seo River, a tributary to the Namhan River winds Cheongryeongpo and its 3 sides are surrounded by the rivers and one side is precipitous. Yukyuk Bong(,or peak), also called Mt. Dosan rose up in the steep wall of rock. The place is a topography hard to get access to, as if were an island.
On the short-term throne, the king who had been little and powerless was dethroned and sent into exile to this Cheongryeongpo, Yeongwol, backwoods by his uncle Suyangdaegun who later became King Sejo. In Cheongryeongpo, the island which is not a island and which people come to on a small ship, how lonely and scared a little king was. Daeneungwon Royal Tombs and Observatory Cheomseongdae
Large ancient tombs of kings and noblemen of the Silla Kingdom can be seen around Gyeongju at the Daereungwon Tomb Complex (Cheonmachong Tomb). There are twenty-three large tombs located here; the most famous being Cheonmachong and Hwangnamdaechong. In an excavation of the area in the 1970's, Cheonmachong was discovered with a painting of mounted horse. This painting is the only discovered painting from the Silla Era
Cheomseongdae is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Asia.
Constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok (632-647), it was used for observing the stars in order to forecast the weather. This stone structure is a beautiful combination of straight lines and curves, and was designated as National Treasure No.31 on December 20th, 1962.
Korean researchers digitally reconstruct face of woman from Silla Dynasty
신라 여인 얼굴 첫 복원...뒷머리 돌출, 이마 좁아
Korean researchers have recreated the face of a woman from the Silla Dynasty using advanced technology.
The digital reconstruction provides a window into the past... and a glimpse of how people looked a time long ago.
Park Se-young has the details.
These little pieces of bone form the shape of a skull.
With a little technological magic, it turns into the face of a woman from the Silla Dynasty, 15-hundred years ago.
From the length of her thigh bone, we think she was about 155 centimeters tall and in her late thirties or early forties.
It took the local researchers a year and a half and lots of digital technology to recreate the woman's face.
First, they took CT scans of the bone fragments and created a virtual skull using 3D modeling techniques.
Then, with the help of digital illustration, the researchers added virual muscles and skin.
It is meaningful that we were able to observe and reproduce the face of a person from the Silla period through an analysis of her skull.
The circumference of the woman's head is about ten percent larger than the women of today, but her forehead is much smaller.
Through isotope analysis, the researchers also found that the woman mainly consumed wheat, rice and potatoes and did not eat much meat.
They said that because this is the first time the facial structure of a person from the Silla era has been digitally reconstructed, more research is necessary before they can say this is how people looked during that period.
