Gympie Gold Regional Produce Meeting at Cooloola Berries
Food and food tourism was on the agenda at a Gympie Gold Regional Produce industry meeting held at Cooloola Berries strawberry farm on the 18th of November 2014.
The event was open to farmers, horticulturalists, the tourism and hospitality industry, food manufacturers, value adding businesses – in fact, anyone who has anything to do with food in the Gympie region.
The Gympie Gold Regional Produce network has gone from strength to strength since its establishment through industry support three years ago. This event provided an opportunity for attendees to discuss ideas, gain inspiration and take the network to even greater heights.
Farm tours, open weekends as well as exciting updates covering promotional and business development opportunities were outlined at the event.
Cr Tony Perrett said, The support from our regional agribusiness industry has been critical to the success of this network development. The Gympie region is well recognised as being home to suppliers, growers and exporters of quality, fresh and processed food products and this initiative is serving to strengthen our growing profile.
The event also provided the opportunity for attendees to network with their industry colleagues, which, in the very demanding world of agriculture, farming and food industry is quite a rare occurrence.

Gympie Region - Tin Can Bay
A sleepy little village with a bundle to do! Seven days a week of safe sailing in protected waters and wonderful fishing. You can hire a houseboat, take a fishing charter, hire a boat or bring your own. Tin Can Bay is home to the Great Sandy Strait which is famous for its safe and calm water ways celebrated for a large number of water activities to be enjoyed and the abundance of wildlife that also call Tin Can Bay home such as resident dolphins - Mystique, Patch and Baby squirt. the once in a lifetime opportunity to interact and feed these rare Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins, stand in the water and get up close and personal with these guys from 7am every morning, to be enjoyed by the whole family or take it a step further and actually feed one of the dolphins their favourite fish for a small fee.
One thing you just can’t leave without trying is its fresh supply of seafood caught daily in Tin Can Bay. Dine in or like many savvy travellers stock up your holiday fridge and enjoy fresh prawns, crabs and fish right on the water’s edge. There’s sailing, horse riding, shooting, two excellent bowling clubs, an 18 hole golf course and a sealed path that follows the mixture of wild and manicured foreshore around the town. But the really unique activity is Kayaking, there’s miles and miles of pristine waterways alive with skates, turtles, dozens of fish species, dolphins, mud crabs, sand crabs, but if you just want a paddle, there’s Breakfast point, the Clickity Clack Shore, the floating tree and Snapper, Crab and Searys Creeks to explore. And then there’s bird watching, yes, you “twitchers” can have a field day, there are over 70 species of shorebirds around the “bay”. Some species fly up to 25,000 klms to get here, now there’s a recommendation.

G150 Interview with Abby from the National Trust
Hi I am Cindy Burgers arts and cultural ambassador of Gympie region. I am here tonight at Gympie regional gallery. We just had the G-150 launch and local presentation and I am here with Abby on the national Trust.
Abby- we’re looking at the publication of this year’s itinerary, we are looking at organizing number of categories we have been working with Gympie times for last few months. We have already been through number of those categories once we have got the remaining this month is commerce and industry, I am really excited for it to be here.
Gympie is more than Gold so there is lots more stories to be told. Next month we will be doing built environment that’s building, bridges, and churches, railways that sort of things and the final one will be on August will be on the people. We know people such as James Wood discovered [] , people like Andrew Fisher who was Prime Minister of Australia came from Gympie and there are lots of other people who have made significant impact on the Gympie region and on the world so we are just looking for the people tell us who they think is most important in those categories.
What we do each month is we run a lead article on Gympie times, it is opportunity for people to send a note or email to editor of Gympie times nominate anything that they think it’s in that category, criteria will be in that article. We ask people to look at that and nominate that will be great.
Cindy- thank you so much for explaining such a massive project. It will help our community so much we appreciate it.
