Day trip to GYODA, Saitama, Japan from Tokyo
This is a video all about my day trip to Gyoda city in Saitama prefecture Japan. Which is around an hours train ride away from Tokyo central station.
For my visit, I went to:
- See the rice field art from the observation deck of the Kodai Hasu no Sat.
- Saitama Kofun park
- museum of the Saitama ancient burial mounds
- Try the local Jelly fries and Tambo at Kodai hasu no sato
- Visit a traditional sock factory - Kineya tabi
- Grab lunch at ANDO for Soba noodle
- Oshi Castle
- Tasting Jyumangoku manjyu

The name Saitama originally comes from the Sakitama (埼玉郡) district of what is now the city of Gyōda in the northern part of what is now known as Saitama Prefecture. Sakitama has an ancient history and is mentioned in the famous 8th century poetry anthology Man'yōshū

At the Tabi to Kurashi Museum in Gyoda City, you can observe the skilled techniques and craftsmanship required to make Japanese tabi socks first-hand. You can even pick out the materials for and watch the creation of your own one-of-a-kind tabi!
During the 1930s, Gyoda City became the number one manufacturer of tabi in Japan, accounting for approximately 80 percent of production nationwide. This lead to Gyoda City becoming known as the city of tabi. Recently, Gyoda City attracted even more attention with the 2017 debut of the critically acclaimed drama Rikuoh, starring Koji Yakusho, Kento Yamazaki, and Ryoma Takeuchi, that follows the lives of tabi workshop employees and their quest to revive the popularity of tabi in Japan.
Although the relocation of factories to sites overseas and a decrease in people wearing traditional Japanese kimono have led to lower tabi productions rates, you can still purchase tabi lovingly hand-crafted by experts in Gyoda City. The process starts with you hand selecting your fabric of choice and watching as experts employ their knowledge and skills to cut and shape your very own tabi using an array of processes and techniques. While staff explain each step of the detailed manufacturing process, you'll find yourself growing increasingly attached to your new tabi as they take shape before your very eyes.
The Tabi to Kurashi Museum is actually a remodeled manufacturing warehouse, meaning you can fully immerse yourself in the history of tabi in Gyoda City thanks to the authentic building and machines. Because tabi are suitable for wear as socks even when you aren't wearing traditional Japanese clothing, they are ideal as a gift or souvenir for yourself or a friend! You can also come just to watch the friendly staff as they lovingly create unique tabi on other days of the month!

Saitama Seibu Lions Mascot's Kawagoe Adventures: Try Your Luck in Love at Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine!
Join Leo and Lina, the Saitama Seibu Lions mascots, as they visit Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, a famous matchmaking spot with 1500 years of history. The shrine, which celebrates the spirits of happy married couples, has been visited faithfully by generations looking for luck in love.
In this video, Leo and Lina try their hands at ringing the shrine's matchmaking wind chimes and fishing for fortunes.
Many people who visit the shrine believe that a wish written on a small piece of paper hung from a matchmaking wind chime will come true when the chime rings clear and bright. Every year, a popular event featuring these photogenic wind chimes draws a large crowd of young people and couples.
Fishing for love fortunes is a fun way to predict your luck in love. Called ai-tai, a double pun on the Japanese words for love (ai), sea bream fish (tai), and wanting to meet (aitai), these unique fortunes will lead you to a great catch!
If you want to gradually close the distance between yourself and your love, pick up a red thread pencil. In Japanese culture, a red thread traditionally connects two people fated to fall in love. Every time you use a red thread pencil, the thread gets shorter and shorter, leading you ever closer to your beloved.
