Odense Travel Guide - Denmark Moments of Joy
Odense is the unofficial capital and largest city on the island of Funen (da.Fyn) in Denmark. As Denmark's third-largest city, it offers the traveller a mixture of an exciting vibrant night-life, beautiful street-scapes, great shopping opportunities & a rich cultural heritage. Odense is roughly in the centre of Funen, which lies between the larger Zealand island & the Jutland peninsula. The first recorded reference to the city dates back to 988 AD in a letter from the German Kaiser Otto III.
Some recent archaeological findings have indicated that a settlement has in fact been around since the Viking period. At that time, however, Odense was just the small centre of the Odin cult. In 1100, the first monastery, St. Knud's was established by English Benedictine monks.
Up until the middle of the 17th century, Odense enjoyed the position as a main trading-centre for the people from the surrounding areas. Local produce & livestock were exported from the city. However, a war with Sweden in the 1600s weakened the city's economy. This economic downturn continued until 1803 when a canal linking Odense & the Baltic Sea was opened. This swiftly changed Odense into a port city & over the next 100 years Odense quickly developed into the modern industrial city which it is today.
Odense is also the birthplace of the world famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen & the city proudly displays statues, parades & monuments in his memory. Andersen was born on 2 April 1805, in a tiny house on Munkemøllestræde, quite close to the cathedral. During his lifetime, Andersen created many famous fairy-tales which today are internationally famous. For example 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Ugly Duckling' & 'The Snow Queen'.
Most of Odense's attractions, bars, restaurants & shopping areas are very easily accessibly on foot. All of the city's main hotels & hostels are located within the city centre or train station areas. As a general rule all of the major attractions in the centre are between 5 & 10 minutes of each other.
A major exception to this is 'The Funen Village' (Den Fynske Landsby), which is about a 45 minute walk along the river. Similarly the zoo is on the same route & is roughly 30 minutes from the city centre. Both of these attractions are sign-posted all the way along the river.
For those interested in a more relaxed break, a river boat (Odense Åfart) can be taken from the bridge in Munke Mose Park (Nyvestergade) to the Zoo & to the forest next to 'The Funen Village'. The journey, which takes around 30 minutes, is a very relaxing way of seeing Odense river, the Danish countryside & to just relax on a summers day. Sometimes live jazz bands occasionally play on-board during the summer months. Row-Boats & Paddle-Boats can also be rented at the same location.
In the present day, Odense remains the commercial hub of Funen, and has a notable shopping district with a diversity of stores. Several major industries are located in the city including the Albani Brewery and GASA, Denmark's major dealer in vegetables, fruits and flowers. The city is home to Odense Palace, erected by King Frederik IV who died there in 1730, the Odense Theatre, the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, situated in the house that was the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. In sports, Odense has a number of football clubs including OB, BM, B1909, and B1913, the Odense Bulldogs professional ice hockey team, and the city also hosts the H.C. Andersen Marathon. Odense is served by Hans Christian Andersen Airport and Odense station, which lies on the line between Copenhagen and the Jutland peninsula.

A village from the time of Hans Christian Andersen
This film gives an introduction to the open air museum ’the Funen Village’ situated in Odense. A visit to the Funen Village is like taking a stroll in the countryside at the time of Hans Christian Andersen.
The museum includes some 25 buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century, all of which were moved to the museum from various sites in the Funen region. A village milieu has been created here comprising half-timbered houses, flower gardens, fenced enclosures, livestock and animals, a village pond and a village street - all surrounded by cultivated fields.

H.C. Andersens hus i Odense

ODENSE, KOLDING, RIBE, ESBJERG - DENMARK 2018 (H.C.Andersen, Ribe Viking Museum)
This time we took a short road trip and visited Odense, Kolding, Ribe and Esbjerg. On our first stop in Odense we explored the famous H.C. Andersen museum and his birthplace house. We really do recommend you visit this museum as it is 5 in 1 ticket and you can explore not only the museum but also the home where he was born, his childhood home, Møntergården- Museum of cultural history and The Tinderbox. Unfortunately due to bad weather conditions we didn't explore Odense as much as we wanted to, however we really enjoyed our short walk trough the city center. Our second stop was in Ribe better known as the oldest town of Denmark were we visited Ribe Viking Museum and explored the beautiful city center. The atmosphere of the city and it's architecture is impressive and something we truly enjoyed. On our way back we stopped in Denmark's youngest metropolitan port and city Esbjerg that is celebrating it's 150th anniversary in 2018. Here we simply had to stop to admire the great work of art designed by Svend Wiig Hansen called The man meets the sea. It is a 9 meters (30 feet) tall white monument of four seated males and it was installed on 28 October 1995. to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the municipality in 1994. We hope you will enjoy this video and give it a thumbs up. Please like and subscribe! See you soon...
