Old Photographs Southend Argyll And Bute Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Southend, Scottish Gaelic: Ceann mu Dheas, the main settlement at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll and Bute. The village is located beside Dunaverty Bay, which at one end has a rocky promontory called Dunaverty Rock, where a fort was located. It is reputed that during the Dunaverty Massacre the Catholic MacDonalds were burned alive in their stronghold at Dunaverty Castle. The village is also reputed to be the location where Saint Columba first set foot in Scotland. The Battle of Dunaverty involved a battle in 1647. The events involved the Covenanter Army under the command of General David Leslie on one side and Highland troops under the command of Archibald Og of Sanda on the other. When the Covenanter Army arrived, they laid siege to the nearby castle and made small raids against the forces inside. Once the attackers had captured the stronghold's water supply, the defenders–by now running out of water–requested a surrender on fair terms. After agreeing to surrender and leaving the castle, the men, women and children were put to the sword at the request of Reverend John Naves and Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll. However, a number of people appear to have survived the massacre, including Flora McCambridge, the infant Ranald MacDonald of Sanda, James Stewart and a MacDougall of Kilmun. The village hall, now the Dunaverty Hall, was built as a drill hall in about 1913. In 1914 it was the base for C Company, 8th battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Records also show the existence of a drill hall in 1882 which was the base of G Company, 2nd Argyll Rifle Volunteers, from 1887 the 5th Volunteer Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

The Mausoleum has remarkably good acoustics, and this local three piece were keen to record some tunes. We were happy to oblige! We think it sounds great and hope you like it to!

Duke of Argyll
Duke of Argyll is a title, created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1701 and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1892. The Earls, Marquesses, and Dukes of Argyll were for several centuries among the most powerful, if not the most powerful, noble families in Scotland. As such, they played a major role in Scottish history throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The current Duke is Torquhil, the 13th man to hold the title.

Ghost Village Argyll Scotland
Polphail is a ghost village near Portavadie Argyll Scotland. It is a deserted village from the oil boom years. The village was never used and was left abandoned complete with furnishings which were pilfered and removed in small boats. It was a folly of the government at that time.
Glasgow's Tenement House
It’s day 82 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I'm in Glasgow, revisiting a great, if offbeat, museum. Something I love about my work: I get the joy of reviewing lots of sights and choosing which ones make it into the guidebook and TV show. While heavily advertised commercial gimmicks like wax museums, torture dungeons, and brewery tours attract hordes of tourists, other sights that take you back in time and connect you intimately with a bygone lifestyle get only a few thoughtful travelers. Some of my highly recommended sights — like the Tenement House in Glasgow (see my description below, excerpted from my Scotland guidebook) — may make people say “Huh!?” But they're the sights that might just make your day.
I also love the similar museums in Copenhagen (the National Museum’s Victorian Apartment), in England’s Cotswolds (the Earl of Wemyss’ Stanway House), and in Paris (Jacquemart-André Museum).
Which lesser-known sights in Europe have given you that fun, intimate, time-warp experience?
Tenement House
Here’s a chance to drop into a perfectly preserved 1930s-era middle-class residence. The National Trust for Scotland bought this otherwise ordinary row home, located in a residential neighborhood, because of the peculiar tendencies of Miss Agnes Toward (1886-1975). For five decades, she kept her home essentially unchanged. The kitchen calendar is still set to 1935, and canisters of licorice powder (a laxative) still sit on the bathroom shelf. It’s a time-warp experience, where Glaswegian old-timers enjoy coming to reminisce about how they grew up.
Ring the doorbell to be let in. Explore the four little rooms. Imagine a world without electricity (Miss Toward was a late adapter, making the leap to electricity only in 1960). Ask about the utility of the iron stove. Ponder the importance of that drawer full of coal and how that stove heated her entire world. Ask why the bed is in the kitchen. As you look through the rooms laced with Victorian trinkets — such as the ceramic dogs on the living room’s fireplace mantle — consider how different they are from Mackintosh’s stark, minimalist designs from the same period
Cost and Hours: £6.50, April-Oct daily 13:00-17:00, July-Aug from 11:00, closed Nov-March.
