A Taste of NORTHERN KYUSHU: What to Do in FUKUOKA, Nagasaki, Saga, and Oita in Japan
EXPLORING NORTHERN KYUSHU
I recently went on a fun FAM trip to northern Kyushu in Japan with Cebu Pacific Airlines. We visited Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Oita, and Saga and experienced some of the best things you can see and eat in those prefectures.
In Fukuoka, we visited Odori Park, Canal City, and Tenjin and got to taste local specialties like Hakata or tonkotsu ramen and mizutaki. We also had a great yakiniku dinner and got to pick persimmon at an orchard in Kurume!
In Nagasaki, we visited the Penguin Aquarium, 26 Martrys Museum, Peace Park, and Inasayama. We had dinner at Nagasaki Chinatown and got to try local specialties like toruko or turkey rice.
In Oita, we spent the morning at Mamedamachi, a small town in Hita, and had a fantastic hitsumabushi lunch. If you like unagi or eel, then you're going to love hitsumabushi!
Finally, we made a quick stop in Saga to visit Yutoku Inari Shrine. It's a Shinto shrine with those characteristic orange torii gates.
Many thanks to Cebu Pacific for sponsoring this trip. If you live in the Philippines and would like to visit the island of Kyushu, then you'll pleased to know that Cebu Pacific offers direct daily flights from Manila to Fukuoka.

Sapporo Beer Garden ᴴᴰ ● サッポロビール園
► Sapporo Beer Garden complex consist of several restaurants, most dominating is the huge Sapporo Beer Hall, where all-you-can-drink beer and all-you-can-eat lamb BBQ is the order of the day.
The lamb BBQ is a popular local dish named after the great Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan, and it's an absolute must to try if you ever visit Hokkaido. What makes it so special is the sauce you dip the meat in once it's done - a soybase with brown sugar, pepper, garlic and a hint of sake. Sounds strange? Perhaps even looks strange? - It's nothing less than amazing, and as an added bonus, you WILL stink of it for the following days. - Enjoy!

[ Journeys in Japan ] Artisans and Beauty Koshu, Yamanashi
Koshu is the former name for Yamanashi Prefecture. In feudal times, it was the base for the powerful Takeda warlords and many traditional crafts date back to that era. Koshu Inden is a way of decorating deerskin with designs in lacquer. Fine washi paper is used for calligraphy. And nishikigoi (varicolored carp) are often considered living artworks. Woodblock print artist David Bull visits the Koshu area to discover this world of natural beauty and artisan skill.

Arita & Karatsu pottery towns - unique footage
Arita and Karatsu pottery is admired around the world by lovers of Japanese ceramics. This video shows a couple of days that me and Moo spent visiting these traditional pottery making villages in Kyushu (Japan).
Actually we didn’t make any appointments. We simply visited the kiln in Karatsu and shot the footage on the spot. The pottery photos you see we took at the homestay we stayed in Karatsu, the kiln we visited in Karatsu, a local Karatsu tea shop and one shot of Arita ware from the Kyushu Ceramic Museum.
We also did a bit of sightseeing around the impressive Karatsu Castle and an observatory overlooking Karatsu. The observatory is a great viewpoint to appreciate the amazing pine forest in Karatsu. It has over 1 million pine trees and is certainly one of the most impressive pine forests in Japan. As you can see it’s situated right on the beach and is great place for a stroll or cycle. Lazily, I have to admit, we travelled around by car.
We shot more footage at Kyushu Ceramic Museum, and took a stroll around the backstreets of Arita. The ancient and pretty wall you can see borders a very famous ceramic kiln which for generations supplied porcelain to the Imperial Japanese household. When we visited we were the only people around (watched over by an ancient cat).
It’s not the first time we visited Arita and Karatsu and it certainly won’t be the last. Luckily it's just a couple of hours drive from our house.

小鹿田焼 大分県 Onta Kyushu JAPAN
Onta Village 小鹿田焼 is one of the most unique places to discover in all of Japan - and that's not just in terms of its ceramics.
Onta Pottery is the name of a type of stoneware pottery made for everyday usage -- typically called 'mingei' (folk art or craft) in Japanese. The community is situated in the Hiko mountain range, about 17 kilometres from the centre of Hita City, and is said to have been established in 1705 to make large wares -- lidded jars for pickled vegetables and fruit, water crocks, ash burners, and pouring vessels with small spouts -- for local farmhouses. At the time potters were themselves farmers, who produced pots during the 'off season' in agriculture. They are fired in a cooperative kiln.

Travelogue in Japan, Pottery town Mashiko, volume 17
We are attending class on pottery, part 4
Mashiko
Mashiko is famous for its pottery, known as Mashiko yaki (益子焼). Mashiko is the site of Saimyoji temple, one of the oldest temples in Tochigi prefecture, and the shrine of the Utsunomiya han, located in Kami-Obaa. Large noborigama kilns were first founded there in 1853, by immigrant potters from the neighboring pottery community Kasama in Ibaraki prefecture. Simple and rustic in style, the main glazes are a clear wood ash glaze, a white rice husk ash glaze, black and kaki (persimmon), sometimes decorated with enamel red, yellow and green. These are worlds apart from the courtly ceramics of Kyoto but yet very Japanese. Pottery has been made since Jomon times (over 10,000 years ago) in Mashiko, but modern Mashiko yaki dates only to 1853. The style was popularized by the potter Shoji Hamada. He was designated as NINGEN KOKUHO (Living National Treasure) in 1955. Because of Hamada, Mashiko yaki has been viewed as a good example of Mingei (Folkcraft) pottery.
Mashiko 益子 is a town located in the south east area of Tochigi prefecture, approximately 140km away from the central Tokyo. Producing quality clay, Mashiko has developed as a pottery town known for Mashiko-yaki pottery, where many potters have studios and many kinds of potteries are sold at stores. The number of the pottery studios and the stores reaches nearly 350 in all.
Since 1966, Mashiko Pottery Market is held twice a year, for about 10 days in spring, and 4 or 5 days in autumn. Not only from Mashiko town, pottery artists and venders from all over Japan also join the market to sell various potteries. This popular market is so large that it will take one day to look around all the stalls there. It is recommended to visit early in the morning (It starts at 9:00AM) as it also gets crowded in the afternoon. During the 11-day event in spring 2014, more than 400,000 people visited the market.
While staying with a Japanese family, having dinner together at their house, you will soon notice that the Japanese has her/his own chopsticks and rice bowl (Ochawan), and it is almost like a taboo to use those of others, even people in the family. It seems Japanese people have a strong attachment for their own everyday dinnerware. Whatever else it might be, finding a very favorite ones at pottery markets is an attraction for Japanese people, and it will of course be a fun for anybody.
