Highlights of Paro to Haa Valley Drive - Bhutan
The journey from Paro to Haa valley is through high altitude terrain located on western Bhutan. Chelela pass at 4000 m is worthwhile taking a break. The Himalayan view from the pass is spectacular so is the landscape of Haa valley. The Hatey village which was our destination beyond Haa town is picturesque place with greenery of cultivation plots, meandering river and a good place to explore albeit on mud stone track.

On Day 8 of our food and travel trip to Bhutan, we spent the night at Haa Valley Homestay and woke up to a beautiful morning. We spent the day exploring Haa Valley, and eating local Haa Valley Bhutanese food.
For breakfast I had butter tea (suja), and ezay chili dip made from a tree tomato.
Chogo - That’s the rock hard cheese I tried in Haa Valley town. It was unique, I spent about ½ an hour chewing on and barely even scratching the surface. You can suck on this rock hard cheese for a long time.
Hoentay - Hoentay are the local Haa Valley buckwheat dumplings, which are known throughout Bhutan and Bhutanese food you can’t miss when you’re in Haa Valley.
Back at Haa Valley Farm Stay we had a hot stone bath in the evening. It felt amazing to soak in a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath.

Haa Town, Haa Valley, Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan
Haa town in Haa valley, located at a high altitude of 2,670 metres, remains one of the least visited places in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and thus, retains a laid-back and unspoiled air of a place which time forgot. This region is one of the most beautiful and isolated areas in the kingdom, adorned with pristine alpine forests and tranquil mountain peaks.
Haa is the ancestral home of the Queen Grandmother and the illustrious Dorji family.
Haa was once the hub for commercial activities between Bhutan and Tibet and was an important trading route.
The Haa valley can be reached via Chelela pass from Paro.

HAA VALLEY:Indian Army’s new strategic location against China after Doklam Standoff.(Paro to Haa valley via Chele la Pass)
Haa District is one of the 20 dzongkhag or districts comprising Bhutan. Per the 2005 census, the population of Haa dzongkhag was 11,648, making it the second least populated dzongkhag in Bhutan after Gasa.
Haa District lies along the western border of Bhutan. To the northwest it is bounded by the Tibet. To the southwest it is bounded by Samtse District, to the southeast by Chukha District, and to the northeast by Paro District.
Haa contains Torsa Strict Nature Reserve, one of the environmentally protected areas of Bhutan. Torsa contains no human inhabitants other than military patrols and posts, occupying substantial portions of the gewogs of Bji and Sangbay. Torsa is connected to Jigme Dorji National Park via biological corridor, cutting across the northeastern half of Haa District.
The Indian Army maintains a military base in the valley to maintain security against incursions from China. The Chinese military has built roads into the Torsa Strict Nature Reserve and Haa District over the past dozen years clearly visible on Google Earth/Maps and other viewing platforms.
In the event of war, India’s Brigade-sized military presence inside Bhutan, stationed at Haa, allows it to attack the Chumbi valley from two sides, potentially cutting off Chinese troops stationed facing Sikkim.
Hence,the significance of Haa Valley is manifolds but at the same time you can’t take your eyes off from the beauty of this valley.

আজকে আমরা খুব সকালে বের হয়েছি। আমাদের আজ কের গন্তব্য হা ভ্যালি। থিম্ফু শহর থেকে বের হওয়ার পর ভুটানের আসল সৌন্দ্যররজ দেখতে পাচ্ছি। ছবি বা ডিডিওতে জা দেখেছি তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি সুন্দর। রাস্তায় কোন এক দোকানে ব্রেক দিয়ে নাস্তা সেরে নিলাম। ভুটানে সবচে বেশী সমস্যা হয়েছিল খাবার নিয়ে। তাদের ট্রেডিশনাল খাবার খেতে পারিনি কেমন একটা গন্ধের জন্য। তাই অনেক সময় ইন্সট্যন্ট নুডলসের উপর নির্ভর করতে হয়েছে।
আমাদের প্রথমে পুনাখা যাওয়ার প্লান ছিল তবে স্থানীয় কিছু মানুষের সাথে পরামর্শ করে হা ভ্যালির উদ্দ্যেশ্যে যাত্রা শুরু করলাম। থিম্ফু থেকে হা ভ্যালী যাওয়ার রাস্তাটা খুবই সুন্দর (নিচের লিঙ্কে দেয়া ভিডিওটি দেখলে কিছুটা বুঝতে পারবেন)
সারি সারি পাহাড় দেখতে দেখতে হা ভ্যালির চলে আসি। হা ভ্যালি মুলত কোন পর্জটন কেন্দ্র নয়। এটি ভুটানের একটি ছোট্ট শহর। চারদিকে উচু উচু পাহাড় আর পাহাড়ী নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত একটি লোকালয়।
হা ভ্যালীতে আসতে আসতে প্রায় দুপুর হয়ে যায়। আমরা খাবার খাওয়ার জন্য হোটেল খুজতে থাকি। কিন্তু খাবার দেখে খেতে ইচ্ছা করতেছিল না। একটা রেস্টুরেন্টে পেয়ে গেলাম ফ্রাইড রাইস । তারপর দুপুরের খাবার খেয়ে হা নদীর ধারে কিছুক্ষন কাটালাম। তারপর গেলাম ঝুলন্ত ব্রিজে । কিছুটা সময় কাটিয়ে চলে জাচ্ছি চেলালা পাস এর উদ্দ্যেশ্যে। চেলালা পাস যেতে হলে ড্রাইভারকে ১৫০০-২০০০ রুপী অতিরিক্ত দিতে হয়।
পারো ও হা ভ্যলীর মাঝাআমাঝি অবস্থিত চেলালা পাস ভুটানের হাইয়েস্ট মটরেবল পাস। অর্থাৎ গাড়ি নিয়ে যাওয়া যায় এমন পাসের মধ্যে এটি সর্বোচ্চ। এর উচ্চতা সমুদ্র পৃষ্ঠ থেকে ৩৯৮৮মিটার অর্থাৎ প্রায় ১৩ হাজার ফুট। আর হা ভ্যালীর উচ্চতা সারে আট হাজার ফুট। অর্থাৎ আমরা এখন প্রায় সারে চার হাজার ফুট উপরে উঠব।
চেলালা পাস পৌছার পর আমরা গাড়ি থেকে নেমে কিছুক্ষন চারপাশটা দেখে নিলাম। তারপর আরো উপরের দিকে উঠতে লাগলাম। যত উপরের দিকে যাচ্ছিলাম তত বেশী ঠান্ডা লাগছিল।জুন মাসেও মনে হচ্ছিল মাঘের শীত। শিতের কাপর নিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম তবে সেটি ব্যাগে ছিল। বুঝতে পারিনি উপরে এতটা ঠান্ডা লাগবে।
আকাশ পরিস্কার থাকলে চেলালা পাস থেকে চীনের জমলহরি মাউন্টেন দেখা যায়। প্রথমে আমরা বরফে ঢাকা জমলহরি পর্বত দেখেছিলাম কিন্তু কিছুক্ষন পরে আবার এটি মেঘে ঢেকে গিয়েছিল। চেলালা পাস দেখা শেষ করে চলে যাই পারো শহরে।

The Haa valley is one the more remote valleys in the kingdom of Bhutan. Off-limits to tourists intell as recently as 2002. I got the opportunity to spend incredible morning explore this valley by myself.

Paro to Chelela and Haa Bhutan - a different experience at December end
The road from Paro to Chelela is fantastic. But at the top of Chelela, the place is very cold and windy. On the way to Chelela to Haa , the view of the calm and quiet Haa is beautiful. Thanks to Mr. Subhajit Neogi of Nightingale Tours and Travel for arranging such a beautiful Bhutan trip.
