Hiriwadunna Village Trek - (Habarana) SriLanka
Buddhism Sri Lanka - Hidden Treasures of Sri Lankan Buddhist Part 2
Bodhi tree at Historic Hiriwadunna is yet to uncover from the hidden history. There is no any archaeological proof to explain the rock crafts abandoned in and around the Siri Maha Bodhi Tree area. Specially the very rare kind of long grass type sitting next to the Bodhi tree
However Hiriwadunna is not a place simply to be ignored.
Hirivadunna is our first and foremost Heritage.

Episode 21 - Sri Lanka - Anuradhapura & Habarana / 365 days off
SRI LANKA: ANURADHAPURA & HABARANA
5th month on the road and a new destination: Sri Lanka!, we landed in Colombo from Madurai, India. The flight was only one hour and we got through immigration very quickly. First stop Negombo. The city is very close to the airport and is on the coast, super touristic as almost everyone arriving on the island spends the first night(s) here and we did too! Then we wanted to go north and hit the so called “Cultural Triangle” of Sri Lanka. Connections from Negombo were not very good despite what we had read in several guidebooks and online. Also we got hit by another bacteria before leaving India and we were not feeling very well so we were looking for some convenient transportation. A car: too expensive! A motorbike: would have been quite fun but how to manage with our backpacks (10kg each)?, Daniel said “why don’t we rent a tuk tuk?” He had just read a few blogs about it and the idea looked perfect! Also the tuk tuk rental office was only 2 min. from our hotel in Negombo. Deal! The owner explained us the process to get a temporary Sri Lankan driving license (Daniel spent half a day at the transportation administration to get it but this is another story) and then the tuk tuk was ours!
Anuradhapura here we go!
After 6 hours of driving including a few stops, we finally arrived in Anuradhapura. The city has a lot of ruins and beautiful buddhist temples. The weather was very hot but we still managed to see most of the sites. The entrance fee is rather expensive (about 25 Swiss francs or US Dollars) for one single day per person. It was a bit of a shock to understand that almost every Sri Lankan historical site registered at the UNESCO is under the same regulation. For us, this meant a huge amount of our daily budget would be dedicated to the visits. This is the first time since we left that we encounter such high prices to enter the sites.
Our second stop was a little closer and only 60km away, Habarana. It was a perfect place as a base to explore the surroundings. There is a lot to see and do around here and it is not always easy to decide where to go.
One of the highlight of our stop in Habarana, was our Jeep Safari at Mynneria National Park to watch elephants in the wild. A beautiful experience even if we would have liked to see less vehicles around the elephants. Some of the jeeps were only transporting 2 people but the car had a capacity of 4 to 6.
We also visited the Dambulla Cave Temple and liked it very much. Our walk to the Habarana lake at sunset was so peaceful, the place is well known for birds watching and we saw quite a few interesting ones. And also to be/remain fit, our little exercise climbing the Pidurangala rock!
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
- Anurhadapura: the dagobas (or buddhist stupas) huge mystic domes found in the ancient city. The water tanks or ponds where people bath and where they collect lotus flowers for the offerings at the temples.
- Mihintale: one dagoba on top of a rock and a magnificient view on the jungle at sunset.
- Habarana: the lake for birdwatching!
- Dambulla: the cave temple, its dozens of buddhas and the beautiful frescoes on the walls.
- Sigiriya: The hiking-climbing of Pidurangala, “the other rock” of Sigiriya, from which there is a nice view of the Lion rock.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Anuradhapura: Montana Rest a friendly B&B. The staff was nice and the food excellent.
Habarana: Weaver Bird Villa a brand new guesthouse of only two rooms. The owner and its staff are friendly. The room was large and comfortable, it is located in a very quiet location only a few hundreds meters away of the Habarana junction.
RESTAURANTS
We mostly ate at the B&B or guesthouses we stayed and enjoyed the local home cooked food!
BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
Rent a tuk tuk to explore the beautiful Sri Lanka!
Alma Tours in Negombo was our rental company. The vehicle cost about 14 Swiss francs or US dollars per day. Also be prepared and arrange an international driving license (which we didn’t do before leaving our home country!) this will ease the process of getting a local license for you to drive the tuk tuk.

So Sri lankaa ???????? (Colombo, Habarana, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Bentota, Beruwala and Galle)
Hello guys, I know it's been a really long break from editing but I am back with another travel video and this time we kicked off 2019 with a trip to Sri Lanka!
Alot of temples, sweaty treks, waterfalls and breathtaking beaches.
If you liked the video, you know the drill!
If you are travelling to Sri Lanka any time soon, down below i have given a brief description about my trip and therefore head start to plan your trip.
So we boarded from Delhi and it took us roughly 4 hours to reach Colombo. Through out this trip, we will be covering 6 major cities of Sri Lanka.
So we hired a minibus from Colombo and travelled to Habarana, which is a 3-hour drive. Habarana is famous for its elephant safari and open grasslands.
Maintain silence when inside the park as there have been incidents where the elephants charge on the jeeps due to annoyance.
We travelled a month later to the terrorist attacks, so apparently, the tourism sector went down and we got personalised services all the time. Plus point!
From Habarana, we started early for the UNESCO World Heritage site, The Sigiriya Rock. It is also considered to be the 8th wonder of the world and the view astonished me with the unique harmony between nature and human imagination. I’ll advise you to hire a local guide to know more about the systematically planned architecture. It is a must visit if you are in Sri Lanka.
The guide also told us there is a long queue for the trek during the peak season, so be well before time.
Next stop was Kandy, which is the hill capital of Sri Lanka. It is a small town situated amidst the hills. The weather was chilly so carry your fleece.
In Kandy, visit the famous temple of the ancient tooth relic, situated in the Royal Complex of the former kingdom of Kandy!
It's a Buddhist temple, so make sure you are covered entirely.
You should visit the local sweet vendors and try their authentic Lankan sweets!
Next in line is Nuwara Eliya, which is apparently is the place where Seeta Maa was held in captivatio also known Ashoka Vatika.. Nuwara Eliya is a hill station so the temperature drops significantly. Do carry warm clothes.
Make sure you visit Lake Gregory, which is the heart of the tea country hill city. It is famous for its tea plantations, so don’t forget to spill some tea, sis.
Shoutout to Indian summer for serving us the best Indian food in Lanka, situated right next to the lake in Nuwara Eliya.
On our way to Nuwara Eliya, we stopped to see the Ramboda waterfall surrounded by the tea plantations.
One can take a quick break, and enjoy the view with some good tea and snacks!
Onto my favourite city, Beruwala has the most chill vibe and one can enjoy water sports and snorkel out there!
We relaxed at the beach and spent the majority of the time in the pool!
Next day, we visited the city of Galle which was a Portuguese town. It has a beautiful aesthetic vibe to it and don’t forget to get clicked near the lighthouse.
Do visit the mama’s cafe, which is the original cafe of a very famous cafe chain in Sri Lanka.
Galle has very vintage shops, so one can buy antiques from there.
One can also visit Mirrisa, for the blue whale sightings in the Indian Ocean. But it’s risky when its raining and the sea is rough.
On our way back we stopped at Bentota for the river safari, which was sad so you can skip it. I’ll advise you to spend your time at the beach, and watch the sun go down.
The last day we planned to visit, Colombo, where one can do a day tour and visit the Odel mall for souvenirs.
Sri Lanka is a small and beautiful place to visit. Don’t forget to drink there most special coconut water.
Also be careful with the spices, because they have their meals cooked in a lot of spices.

Hiriwadunna Sri Bodhiraja Forest Hermitage
Hiriwadunna Ruins along with its ancient bodhi tree lies just before Habarana Town about 1 km away from the main road.
This site came in to limelight few years ago when a local priest published a conspiracy theory book called ‘Apa Upan Me Helabima Budun Upan Jambudweepayai’ (අප උපන් මේ හෙළබිම බුදුන් උපන් ජම්බුද්වීපයයි) arguing that the Buddha was born and lived in ancient Sri Lanka but by a master conspiracy of King Asoka of India, this was made to forgotten with time.
According to this book, Buddha’s birth location Lumbiniya is located in Theldeniya, Isipathanaya where the Buddha preached the first sermon is said to be Isinbessagala Viharaya in Medawachchiya. Kusinara where Buddha passed away is at Budugala and Bodh Gaya where Buddha attained the blissful state the Buddha is identified as Hiriwadunna and the ancient Bodhi Tree which is at the Hiriwadunna Monastery has been identified as the original Sri Maha Bodhi where Buddha attained nirvana.
A large slab of stone, probably a Asanagara ( symbolic seat of Buddha) lies at the bottom of the ancient bo tree now partially buried under the roots of the tree has been identified as the Vajrasanaya where Buddha sat during enlightenment.
A stream which flows nearby has been named the ancient Neranjana River. There is type of tussock grass which is not generally not commonly found. This is said to be ‘Kusa Thana’ which the merchants ‘Thapassu Balluka’ offered to Buddha on the 7th week of enlightenment.
Ruins of a ancient Sakman Maluwa ( a promenade used for meditation) is identified as being made by the Muchlinda, the cobra king where Buddha spent his 3rd week after enlightenment. Ruins of the granite building nearby has been identified as the Ruwan Geya, where the Buddha spent his 4th week after enlightenment.
Irrespective of the validity of these comments in the book which has been rejected by most and even banned from libraries, Hiriwadunna is a place to visit for those who are interested in Sri Lankan history and buddhist heritage.
