Japanese Shrine Arata-Hachiman Shrine in Kagoshima City, Japan
ARATA-HACHIMAN SHRINE (Kagoshima City)
Arata-Hachiman Shrine was built about 1,000 years ago.
Many people come to this shrine to pray for safe birth of babies.
It is also said that snakes (vipers) will keep away from you if you pray at this shrine.
Those who dislike vipers take the sand under the shrine building as good-luck fortune.
So, it is good for you to come to the shrine if you dislike snakes!

Shinto Shrine In Okitsu Japan
This video is part of a playlist documenting a fun, day-long outing to Okitsu Japan. This trip was made in an effort to try and discover the real-life location which may have inspired the famous Edo-period wood-block print artist Hiroshige Ando in making his print for the village of Okitsu. This famous print depicts a pair of hefty sumo wrestlers rounding a corner near the mouth of the Okitsu river. This print was include in the artist's famous print series titled The 53 Stages of the Tokaido. Click on the following link to see the playlist titled Searching For Hiroshige Ando.
Shinto is one of the two major religions of Japan (the other is Buddhism). Shinto is often considered to be the native religion of Japan, and is as old as Japan itself. The name Shinto means the way of the gods. Shinto is a pantheistic religion, in which many thousands of major and minor gods are thought to exist. The Japanese have built thousands of shrines (jinja) throughout the country to honor and worship these gods. Some shrines are huge and are devoted to important deities. Other shrines are small and may be easily missed when strolling along roads in the countryside.
Shinto gods are called kami. Kami are thought to have influence on human affairs, and for this reason many Japanese make regular pilgrimage to community shrines in order to offer prayers to local kami. The act of prayer involves approaching the shrine structure, passing through the gate-like torii, cleansing the hands and mouth with water and possibly ascending stairs to the main entrance of the shrine. Usually without entering the shrine the worshipper will throw some coins into a stone or wooden collection box and then rattle the suzu bell which is at the top of a long hemp rope. The worshiper grabs hold of the rope and shakes it back and forth causing the copper bell at the top to rattle. This is thought to get the attention of the shrine god. The worshipper then bows twice, claps his or her hands twice and then bows again. In addition, the worshipper may clasp their hands together in silent prayer. Shintoism and Buddhism have managed to find a comfortable coexistence in Japan. Evidence of this harmonious relationship is found in the fact that that most Japanese are married in a Shinto shrine, but buried by a Buddhist priest.

Japan 1962: around Yokohama and Kamakura 横浜鎌倉
From an amateur film taken in 1962. The camerawork is clumsy, yet these images may be of interest to those who know the present surroundings. Does anyone recognize them? May be the children seen have become old (wo)men after fifty years.
EXPLORING TOKYO'S oldest and historic SHINTO SHRINE (Suwa Shrine), JAPAN
SUBSCRIBE: - Suwa Shrine has long been famous for its big festival, called Nagasaki Kunchi (held on October 7-9 each year), and it is one of the largest in Japan, in terms of both the number of participants and the number of spectators. It has been designated by the government as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The whole neighborhood is filled with people dancing, carrying unusual palanquins, and pulling floats, while the traditional festival chants echo all around.

Queensland Hosts One Of The Worlds Oldest Military Sports
Dressed in full Samurai costumes and riding some of the best locally trained horses, the 16 archers charged down Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas battling it out to see who could hit three individual targets.
Tournament Organiser Glen Percy said it was the first time an accredited traditional Japanese horseback archery event had ever been held outside of Japan.
It was a rare and incredible display of ancient Japanese military skills - all the more unlikely for being held in the tropics of Queensland.
Yabusame began as a form of military training and combines the highest skills of horsemanship and archery. Competitors are clad in the hunting outfit of medieval warriors and shoot at three targets as they race by on horseback. To see this sport performed in Australia, on a beach more known as the jump off point for the Great Barrier Reef, makes it all the more unusual.

During the sakura season, the area surrounding Yasukuni Shrine becomes the most beautiful famous place in Tokyo for cherry blossoms. Although there is also the controversy of the war dead enshrined at Yasukuni, the shrine, where you can experience traditional events every season, has plenty of things to see.

Discussion: A fresh start for East Asia's leading powers?
For the first time in three years, leaders from China, Japan and South Korea met for trilateral talks. South Korean President Park Geun-hye hailed it as a complete restoration of the relationship. Is this just hyperbole or a genuine fresh start for the three powers? Our studio discussion brings together Yang Xiyu from the China Institute of International Studies, Eunjung Lim from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and Tokyo Foundation's Takaaki Asano for views from all three sides on what has always been a complicated relationship.
