Shrines that enshrine Hachiman are named Hachiman-jinja Shrine (Hachiman-sha Shrine, Hachimangu Shrine, Wakamiya-jinja Shrine) and there are said to be between 10,000 and 20,000 in Japan - making it the second most numerous type of Shinto shrine after Inari-jinja.

The origins of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine date from the time of the Emperor Nintoku (413 - 439), when he reguested Prince Takefurukuma-no-mikoto to subjugate the monster Ryoumen Sukuna, an incredible beast with 2 heads, 4 arms and 4 legs.

More than 1,500,000 people vist the shirine annually. The Takayama Matsuri (Festival) is regarded as one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. (along with Chichibu Matsuri in Saitama Prefecture and the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.)
The focus of the festival is the magnificent floats which are pulled through the strees of the town.
The Takayama Matsuri actually composed of two festivals: the Spring Festival (April 14th and 15th), in which 12 floats take part, and the Autumn Festival (October 9th and 10th) which features 11 floats. The Takayama Festival began about 350 years ago as a simple village ceremony. Since Takayama is in Hida, the center of Japan’s timber producing region, the town grew as an important distribution center for the area, attracting large numbers of sake brewrers, cloth merchants, woodworkers, and other craftsmen. As the result of these rich merchants’ support, and the pride in the high quality work of the artisans, the floats beccame more and more magnificent, as a result of competition developed among the various districts of the town.

日本 京都府京都市上京区 首途八幡宮を歩きました。
Kadode Hachiman-gu Shrine, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan
首途八幡宮の「首途(かどで)」とは「出発」を意味する言葉であり、源義経奥州出発の地ともいわれています。
当時この地には商人・金売吉次の屋敷があったとされ、彼は奥州平泉へと向かう義経を手伝ったと伝えられています。
その際に社で道中の安全を祈願して出立したといわれることから、首途八幡宮と呼ばれるようになったとのことです。
そのため、旅立ちや旅行安全の神社としても知られています。

The adjacent Takayama Festival Yatai Kaikan exhibits the floats used in the festival. You can get an up-close-and-personal look at these gorgeous floats which have been handcrafted by the artisans of Hida.

Sakura Cherry Blossoms in Hirosaki - Japan ᴴᴰ ● 桜まつり青森弘前⎮Japan Travel Vlog
►Hirosaki Castle Park is home to almost 3000 sakura trees, with over 50 different types - and in my opinion, it's THE best spot of anywhere in Japan to watch the cherry blossoms.
There are lots of great places around Tokyo to watch the sakura cheery blossom, but Hirosaki in Aomori isn't just great, it's an overwhelming experience, with sakura everywhere you look, in this beautiful castle park, with Mount Iwaki (Iwakiyama) serving as a perfect backdrop.
Aomori is located north of Tokyo, 3h10m by Shinkansen, right under the island of Hokkaido. Once you get to Aomori City, it's another 50 minutes by local train to Hirosaki, but well worth the effort, and I'd say it's something you should see just once in your life.
