Kamikura Shrine - Wakayama -
Located near the top of Mt. Gongenyama in Wakayama prefecture you first ascend a very steep stone staircase made of 538 steps to find tucked below a huge boulder where the Kumano deities were said to have descended from heaven to earth. Smaller than its main shrine, Kamikura-Jinja is where the famous Oto Matsuri fire festival takes place every year in February. Here worshipers run down the mountain carrying torches offering a unique spectacle rarely seen across Japan!

Hieizan Enryakuji Temple - Shiga - 延暦寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Often wrongly credited as one of the many beautiful temples of Kyoto, Enryakuji, is actually located on top of Mount Hieizan in Shiga prefecture. It is properly credited however as one of the most important monasteries in Japanese history as well as being the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders the Pure Land (Jodo), Zen and Nichiren sects.
Enryakuji Temple was initially founded in 788 by Saicho, the monk who introduced Tendai Buddhism from China and features as many as 3,000 other temples. Enryakuji Temple is also famous for its past army of warrior monks (僧兵 sōhei) who often engaged in power struggles with other monasteries and political leaders in Kyoto, as a counterbalance to power hungry individuals.
Note : Enryakuji Tem main hall is undergoing some renovation and will be covered by scaffolding until at least 2026.

Takinohai Waterfall - Wakayama -
Located in the center of the Wakayama mountainside, Takinohai (Taki No Hai) is an impressive bedrock river channel and waterfall. The myriad of potholes, both large and small, that dot the riverbed and surrounding rocks have been created over centuries of natural erosion by small stones washed downstream boring holes in the rock. And if you happen to be a fan of fishing, join the locals during summertime and try and catch some tasty sweetfish!

Kimon guardian Shrine palace of Wakayama castle Wakamiya Hachiman Gu

Kimon is called Onmyodo's direction for demons to come and go, and it is a disappointing direction, and there are many legends related to Kimon in each home.
Here at Wakamiya Hachimangu, a prayer for avoiding disasters is being held.

Shirasaki Coast - Wakayama -
What makes so Shirasaki Coast so fascinating? It’s thanks to the unique limestone rock formation you could, during a hot summer day, feel like being in the south of Europe or even Greece. Shirasaki Coast is not only famous for its beautiful landscape but also for good times around a BBQ or rent a small cabin for a unique vacation by the sea. However, as of 2019, the cabins and bbq area have been closed for renovation.

Nachi Falls - Wakayama -
After Mount Fuji, Chureito Pagoda, Obuchi Sasaba and Wakayama’s famous Taki Fall (Taki waterfall), the Seigantoji Pagoda is one of the world's most famous locations wherein a single picture so much of Japan’s beauty can be seen. Right in the center of Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) history, the shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites that exemplify the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that is unique to the Kumano region.
The product of its proximity to the main shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha, the Buddhist temple of Seigantoji and it’s gorgeous three-story pagoda is just as impressive as the 133 meters tall Nachi Waterfall, or Nachi No Taki, which has been venerated since the earliest Japanese people.

Momijidani in Wakayama castle 【 Travel Japan
Momijidani Japanese garden in Wakayama castle
The garden was built by Tokugawa Yorinobu in the early Edo era.
The bright red maple leaves are reflected on the surface of the water.
It makes the pond all the more attractive.
The admission is free.
It costs 450 yen to enjoy green tea with Japanese sweets in a traditional tea house.
You can also visit a corridor bridge between Nishinomaru and Ninomaru where only the lord and his retainer were allowed to pass in the Edo era.

Hachiman-jinja Annual Festival - Carrying of the Mikoshi
Earlier this month we went to see the annual festival at Haya Hachiman-jinja (a local shinto shrine) in Wakayama Prefecture. We arrived in time to catch the beginning of the mikoshi procession (a portable shrine).
tl;dw: drunk people attempting to carry a ridiculously heavy shrine. drop it and you anger the gods.

Thirteen wheeled floats decorated with flowers and lanterns were towed in the Shinminato Hikiyama Festival in the Shinminato district in Imizu city, Toyama Prefecture, on Oct. 1. Japan Diary: Kamakura
Our second destination in our Japan trip was Kamakura.
This is south of Tokyo and was a simple train journey away.
A lovely town with so much to see. We visited a number of the shrines/temples, but I highly recommend visiting the centre too. Loads of shops/restaurants!
The rain did not stop all day, but definitely added to the experience and gave us some great memories.
Subscribe for more Japan videos. We have 5 more cities to go!
