Hachiman-bori Canal - Shiga - 八幡堀 - 4K Ultra HD
Hachiman-bori Canal is the pride and joy of Omihachiman City. The canal is five-kilometers long and was used in the past to not only transport people and merchandises but also used to divide the city by class and caste.
It was in the late 16th Century that the Toyotomi noble family wanted to develop Omihachiman City by connecting it to Lake Biwa, and de facto made Omihachiman City into a huge trading post between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Walking Around Omihachiman(Shiga, Japan)
Ōmihachiman means Hachiman in Ōmi. When Hachiman Town (the forerunner of this city) became a city, there was the existing city of Yahata in Fukuoka Prefecture. In Japanese, Hachiman and Yahata are written with the same kanji, so Ōmi was added to avoid confusion. Hachiman is the Shinto god of war. His symbol is the dove.

Hachiman bori
This is the Omihachiman canal. I live right next to it. This area is home to the Himure shrine and the Hakuunkan (some building that seems to be important to the community).

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, which is close to Lake Biwa, has a long history of idyllic satoyama landscapes, including water sports. On the other hand, it is a place where the townscape which has developed independently as the Omi merchant birthplace is left. You can enjoy the scenery of “Hachimanbori Canal”, which is a place of rich nature and the place of people’s life, with a rowing boat or an engine boat.

Description
————————————————————————
The shops constructed from the end of the Edo Era in the 19th century into the Meiji Era created a well-organized area that has been nationally designated as an Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings. The pine trees that soar over the walls of the buildings further enhance this ancient townscape.

[JAPAN VLOG #3] Travel With Yui : SHIGA PREFECTURE
* An 11- DAYS- TRIP TO JAPAN *
We spent half day of day 3 in Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan with the cute sea creatures, didn't forget to get the Rikuro Ojisan's cheese cake at Osaka Station before taking off to our next stop, KYOTO!! We reached our homestay in Sakamoto late and couldn't go according to our plan to visit Kibune Shrine :( Spent the rest of the day to explore around the peaceful village and made friend with the friendly villagers. Had dinner at a nearby restaurant.
We got up early the next day and headed to Hikone first, visited Gokoku Shrine and Hikone Castle, went to Omihachiman and experienced the Hachimanbori Meguri, were surprised that everything in Omihachiman closed before 5pm but lucky enough to find an opened restaurant Hatsuyuki Shokudo. We really enjoyed our late lunch/ early dinner there, prepared by a friendly and nice japanese family. We highly recommend for those who plan to visit Omihachiman to try out the food there!!

Harie Kabata Spring Water System, Japan
The village of Harie has a unique relationship with water. Fresh spring-water flows through the town in specially designed canals which branch off to feed outhouses, or Kabata.
Residents use the water collected in their Kabatas for cleaning, washing and drinking. They even use the Kabata's cold water to keep vegetables and other foods fresh.
