Yasaka-jinja (jinja means shrine) respects Susanoo-no-mikoto, Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto, and Yahashira-no-mikogami.
Susanoo-no-mikoto is a great god in Japanese mythology, known for his defeat of Yamata-no-orochi (a large serpent with eight heads: a symbol of many disasters), redemption of Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto, and produced the ground great-discernment on the earth.
According to the legend of the shrine, its history may go back as far as 150 years before the Heian era, AC656 (the second year of the reign of Emperor Seimei). Along with the development of the capital, adoration to the shrine spread widely all over Japan. Today, approximately 3,000 satellite shrines exist in various parts of Japan.
The name of the shrine was changed to Yasaka-jinja when shrines and Buddhist temples were separated at the time of the Meiji Restoration. The shrine was originally called the Gion-sha or Kansin-in for a long time.

Japan Trip: Asakusa & Kamakura (Day 5 & 6)
Yo!, I gotta stay on top of these videos. Hella nostalgia going back and editing the video. Gotta stay up ^
KBlog Special (Tsushima Island) Part 3
If you would like to know what information I used to get my way around the Island please check out more information down below.
This video combines two days of my trip. As much as Izuhara City was bigger than Hitakatsu, I liked Hitakatsu much more. It was just more quiet. Though there is more things to do in Izuhara. I don't know if I recommend going to the Red Rice fields. They are suppose to turn red early September and I went late September. Either they didn't last very long with a red color tint or they didn't plant the red rice at all. Either way, I wouldn't really go unless you really REALLY want to see it. As for the squid boat thing. I was told that it's a hit or miss with seeing the boats. It depends on the weather and season and I guess it just wasn't my time to see it. The trip was great. I hope you find these videos useful. I was a little disappointed with the videos I saw on youtube, so I hope these will help. Enjoy your trip if you get to go.

Kagami-ryu Kiba Dakyu is a form of Japanese polo which is a cross between lacrosse and polo. It came over from China originally coming from Persia. In Japan it became popular with aristocrats between the 8th and 10th Century.
It fall out of fashion until it was revived in the 18th Century as a military training sport during the era of peace of the Edo Period (1603-1867). Kagami-ryu Kiba Dakyu started in 1827 for the Hachinohe samurai to maintain their horse and spear skills.
This demonstration along with Dakyu on foot is done on August 2nd during Hachinohe's Sansha Taisai Festival.

A Jockey's Jinja: Fujinomori Shrine!
Fujinomori SHrine has a long history. It was built before the relocation of the capital to Kyoto in 794. The shrine deifies twelve gods including Susanoono Mikoto, who are venerated as Ubusunagami (tutelary gods of hamlets) of Fukakusa area in the south of Kyoto.
The shrine is known as a place where the festival Shobu no Sakku (Iris Festival) originally started. People believe in the deity of the shrine for horses and winning in competition. There are two reasons for this. One of the reasons is that the Japanese words for 'Iris' and 'battle' are the same in pronunciation (i.e., both of them are pronounced 'shobu'). The other reasons is that the Fujinomori Festival, which is held on May 5 every year, includes a thrilling religious event called Kakeuma Shinji, when horseback riders thrill spectators with spectacular stunts. The enshrined gods include Prince Toneri, the first scholar of Japan and the editor of the Nihonshoki (chronicles of Japan). Therefore, people believe in the deity of the shrine for learning as well.
It is said that the main hall was granted in 1712 by Emperor Nakamikado and that it had been used as the office in the Imperial Court, known as the Naisho-dokoro (Kashikodokoro). The Hachimangu inner sanctuary located in the East behind the main hall and the Taishogun inner sanctuary located int he west are designated as important cultural properties.
Moreover, there is a noted spring named Fujinomizu, which means water never found in other places, in the east of the main hall.

The shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown flute. It was originally introduced from China into Japan in the 8th century and underwent a resurgence in the early Edo Period. The shakuhachi is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in ABS and hardwoods. It was used by the monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen (blowing meditation). The instrument is tuned to the minor pentatonic scale.
Aso Shrine at Mount Aso in Kyushu is traditionally held to have been a center of worship before the accession of Emperor Jinmu. The shikinaisha shrine complex at Ichinomiya in what is today Kumamoto prefecture was said to have been established in 281.
Records link the founding of the shrine to the reign of Emperor Keiko. By the middle of the 11th century, the shrine was involved in national issues as they played out across Kyushu. During the ascendancy of the Kamakura shogunate, the Houjo clan exercised a significant influence over the affairs of Aso Shrine.
This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the veneration of Tateiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, who was a grandson of Japan's first emperor and the brother of Emperor Suizei, the second monarch on the traditional list of emperors. In the same period that Emperor Jimmu was establishing his palace at Kashihara at the foot of Mount Unebi in Yamato province,Tateiwatasu was sent to Aso where he helped establish a number of agricultural communities; and later, he is said to have built a palace at Miyagi.
The original location of the shrine is uncertain because it was destroyed and rebuilt many times in or near the crater of Aso-zan. The present buildings date only from the Tenpo era (1830-1843).
Aso was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of the old Higo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Kumamoto Prefecture.
From 1871 through 1946, the Aso Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
