Hachioji Castle Ruins
On January 2nd Hiroko and I visited her father's grave near Mt Takao, to clean it and pray. Then we found a little known famous castle (100 top castle ruins in Japan) just a short two km away. As it was such a nice day we traveled up the mountain to check out the ruins (and a geocache hidden in the vicinity).
There is a huge amount of important history at Hachioji Castle.

Built: ~ 1580
Location: Mt. Fukazawa (On the old Koshu Kaido trade route)
Elevation: ~ 450m
Purpose: Outpost for Odawara Clan
Founder: Hojo Ujiteru (Odawara Clan vassal)
Attacked: June 23, 1590
Battle: One Day
Warlord: Toyotomi Hideyoshi

Uesugi Kagekatsu

The battle lasted one day but was very fierce.
Maeda attacked from the front, while Uesugi attacked from the back.
The castle fell.
The soldiers, women and children not captured, escaped and committed suicide by seppuku, or by throwing themselves off the top of a nearby waterfall, to their death.
It is said that the pond at the bottom of the falls, and the river below it, ran red with the blood of the dead...

Hey guys.
This is a quick vid about Hachioji castle ruins in, of course, Hachioji. It can be found just north of Takao station in Tokyo.
The history of the castle is a little mysterious, but there's a high chance it was besieged and razed before it was fully completed.
This was a hilltop castle that would have been a formidable position to try and take.
The waterfall has a legend, too. Apparently, when the castle was razed, many people committed suicide and the rivers ran red with blood. Today however, it's a stunning waterfall within a lush and vibrant area.
Please check it out if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, or just want to see a part of Tokyo that few people have. Access from the centre of Tokyo is pretty straightforward. Take either the Chuo Line or Keio Line (heading to Takaosanguchi)

Hachioji Castle Ruins 八王子城
Quick walk through the castle ruins starting at the bottom after passing the Shiroyama River moat, climbing the high stairs and entering the Main Palace grounds.
This is a National Historic Site and one of Japan's 100 castles.
The restoration and reconstruction of this site started in 1990 and is still actively progressing.

In the last part of the Age of Civil Wars, HOJO Ujiteru, a son of HOJO Ujiyasu of the load of Odawara Castle, build Hachioji Castle in the extensive mountain area as a protective fort of the west part of Kanto district. Toyotomi Hideyoshi has dispatched the troops of MAEDA Toshiie and UESUGI Kagekatsu for attacking Hachioji Castle in 1590. The castle put in fierce attack and as a result, it fell in only one day. Eventually, the Hojo ruined due to loss of the most important castle, which controlled the Kanto area. Thereafter, TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi has accomplished the ruling of whole country. After the elapse of 400 years, a part of the castle at the foot of Shiroyama and its ruin has been restored to its original state. A day hike through the woods near Hachioji's famed Haunted Castle that was destroyed in one day, 23 June 1590. Over 25 thousand were killed during the battle on one single day. The entire place had a creepy feel to it. Located in Western Tokyo, Japan in the Kanto Plain about and hour from Yokota AB, Japan.

It was a really nice day. If you get the chance, definitely check that place out! Be careful of snakes. Apparently this is meant to be a haunted place, but that's not my area of expertise.

Hachioji Castle 八王子城 - Waterfall
A waterfall of Shiroyama River. The river forms a moat at the side of the castle, preventing it from an easy invasion. This is also a place of ritual suicide of warriors, women and children when the castle fell to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Siege of Odawara in 1590 AD. It has been said that the river has been bloodstained for three days following the defeat of Hojo.
