Shirahama Shrine - Shizuoka - 白濱神社 - 4K Ultra HD
Located along the east coast of Izu towards Shimoda on route 135, Shimoda hides a gorgeous little shrine sitting right by the beach. Although it is rather small in size, the Shirahama Shrine is none the less full of surprises. Accessible by a small bridge, the shrine’s entrance will welcome you with a large red torii sitting next to a several centuries old tree which still stands proudly after being damaged many times by natural disasters. While Shirahama Shrine’s main hall is clearly visible to all, only the very curious visitors will find a small passage that will guide them deep into the shrine’s forest and to the top of its hill to enjoy yet another hall, heavily protected, where god is suppose to rest.
But by far the most famous part of this shrine is in fact located hundreds of meters away from it, on Shirahama Beach and where another red torii is standing still and proudly facing the wrath of the sea. And since we always like a good teaser, this very same torii and beach will be covered on another soon-to-come video of Shirahama!

Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - Kanagawa - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Engaku-ji Temple - 円覚寺 - 4K Ultra HD : Like Hokokuji, Engakuji is not your average temple, and it is actually ranked as the second most important Zen Buddhist temple in Japan. Founded in 1282 by a Chinese Zen monk at the request of Hojo Tokimune (then ruler of Japan), Engakuji is in fact more like a closed village temple than an actual temple.
Indeed Engakuji features not only seven main buildings including the Sanmon (山門) as the main gate, but also a main hall or Butsu-den (仏殿), Shari-Den a reliquary hall (舎利殿), Butsunichia-an (仏日庵) or the burial site of Hojo Tokimune, Obai-In (黄梅院) a small temple containing a statue of Kannon, Ogane (大鐘) a 2.5m high bell as well, Mu (無) the grave of of film director Yasujirō Ozu and the private lodgings of many priests.
The “Japanese Village” atmosphere, with its many ponds, the cafe and restaurant make Engakuji one of the most interesting places to visit in Kamakura by a long shot!

☆Bits of knowledge〜〜
A shōtengai (商店街) is a style of Japanese commercial district running along a certain street. Shōtengai often connect to the nearest train station. Most suburbs and towns of Japan have shōtengai of varying size, and larger shōtengai may take the form of covered arcades that are blocked off to traffic.

Duty in Japan - Odawara Castle
Japan is filled with great places to visit, and Odawara Castle is just one of them. The NAF Atsugi Fleet and Family Readiness Center has directions to travel to Odawara Castle, which is about a hour train ride from NAF Atsugi. We hope you take the time to enjoy the many sites Japan has to offer while stationed here.

Atami Castle - Shizuoka - 熱海城 - 4K Ultra HD
Shizuoka Atami Castle - 熱海城 - 4K Ultra HD : Also known as Atamijo, this “castle” is in fact a pure tourist attraction that was built in 1959 on a mountain top overlooking the city of Atami, despite the fact that Atami never had any castle in its history!
To be fair, Atamijo is a good looking castle from the outside and with a stunning view of Atami from its observatory deck. But beside these two major features, and maybe its small museum, Atami Castle is in many ways a cheap attraction.. So unless you are planning to shoot some gorgeous photos of Atami, don’t waste your time visiting the place, just enjoy the view of Atami of this well designed, but fake, Edo period castle.

Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - Kanagawa - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD : Originally erected and founded by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1063, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the most important Shinto Shrine in the famous resort city of Kamakura, near Yokohama. Its popularity among Japanese tourists of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is almost without limit and its 1.8km long approach gives the shrine its unique sense of grandeur that unfortunately quickly vanishes once you are standing in the shrine’s main hall. But then again, it is only when you are looking back on your path that you can really appreciate the inner beauty of this temple.
Speaking of the shrine’s main approach, did you know that the two ponds flanking it have a dedicated meaning? Indeed the pond that features three islands represents the Minamoto Clan, while the other represents the Taira Clan, Minamoto’s arch rival and has four islands. While this may sound unimportant to most of us, the number four in Japan is also known as the unluckiest number since in Japanese its pronunciation is similar to the word “death”...

Tokyo - Sanja Matsuri (part 1)
Video clips from this year's Sanja Matsuri (18th of May 2013), held at the Asakusa district in Tokyo
From Japan-guide:
The Sanja Matsuri (Sanja Festival) is an annual festival in the Asakusa district that takes place over the third full weekend in May. It is held in celebration of the three founders of Sensoji Temple, who are enshrined as Shinto gods (kami) in Asakusa Shrine next door to the temple. Nearly two million people visit Asakusa over the three days of the festival, making it one of the three biggest festivals in Tokyo, together with the Kanda Matsuri and the Sanno Matsuri. Saturday features the neighborhood mikoshi, nearly 100 of them from the district's 44 neighborhoods, which are brought out around noon and carried to Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine to be blessed before they are carried back to be paraded around their neighborhoods to spread luck and prosperity. Many neighborhoods also have smaller children's mikoshi as well as women's mikoshi.
Kamakura Fireworks Festival 2016, Japan
When I attended Kamakura Hanabi Taikai in the summer of 2016, just hours after my plane had landed, I mostly took photos with my DSLR but I also filmed quite a bit using my phone. Long before, in January 2015, I tried my hand at composing music for the first and so far only time. Finding that mp3 a few days ago gave me the idea to put the two things together, and here it is. Not high quality, but fun to make. ^_^
Kanagawa Owakudani - 大涌谷 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Owakudani - 大涌谷 - 4K Ultra HD : Owakudani is an area around a crater created during Mt Hakone's last eruption some 3,000 years ago. Today Owakudani is still an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot rivers and hot springs are heavily present. Despite being a very famous tourist attraction where were you can enjoy, in some safe zones, a gorgeous view of Owakudani fumes and Mt. Fuji, the place also offers you the chance to purchase eggs naturally cooked in one of Owakudani's hot water springs. The eggshells are blackened by the sulfur and are said, according to local folklore, to prolong your life by a good seven years.
Unfortunately and as for today, Owakudani is currently closed due to an increase in seismic activity that, according to scientists, could lead to a volcanic eruption.
