Exploring Charleston West Virginia as a Street Performer (Busker)
I spend the night in Daniel Boone National Forest and drove to Charleston West Virginia. My first stop was a bookstore because I think bookstores (and the surrounding areas) are a good way to get a sense of a town. I busked (street performed) near the bookstore (Taylor Books and Coffee) and people were really supportive. The ladies at the barber shop said I should come back and play a gig at the bookstore. Overall, Charleston West Virginia is a cool town with what appears to be a cool music scene. It's one of those towns that's next to a river, and it has brick sidewalks. They have the Haddad Riverfront Park with an amphitheater, and they had a show there that night but I wanted to catch JD McPherson in Richmond Virginia.
Within this video, I also talk about how and why busking worked better for me in small towns like Louisville Kentucky and Charleston West Virginia compared to Austin, or Memphis, or Nashville. I also talk about things I do to add legitimacy to distinguish myself from being a beggar. Because I am primarily interested in understanding the vibe of these cities and I want to encourage professional musicians to play on the street because it contributes to culture.

WWII Era Landing Craft
See the USS-LST - 325 steam into Charleston, West Virginia, turn around at the State Capitol and then dock at Haddad Riverfront Park. The ship which was built in the 1940s carried tanks, troops, ammunition and equipment to European shores. It can hold 30 Sherman tanks. Most of the 1,051 built were eventually scrapped or given to other countries, but this one was saved and converted to a traveling floating museum.

African American Life A Personal Perspective 2016 part II
On Thursday, June 30, 2016, Dr. Cubert Smith presented “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston.
Dr. Cubert Smith grew up in St. Albans and is a graduate of Garnet High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University, one master’s degree from Marshall University and another from the University of Guanajuato in Mexico, and a doctorate from Union Graduate College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Smith also received additional post-doctoral credit from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Smith taught in Kanawha County schools and at West Virginia State University. During Charleston Mayor Kemp Melton’s administration he served as director of Charleston-Korolev Sister City Program, a cultural exchange initiative with Korolev, Russia. Smith’s public sculptures are located around the Kanawha Valley, including at the South Charleston Mound, Charleston’s Haddad Riverfront Park, Yeager Airport, and West Virginia State University. Of special meaning to him are the bronze plaques he created for the doors at St. Paul Baptist Church in St. Albans.
A Cubert Smith sculpture was one of the works selected to represent the U.S. in the 2nd Black World Arts Festival held in Nigeria. In 1984, Governor John D. Rockefeller IV selected him as West Virginia’s nominee to attend the American Academy in Rome. He was again honored by Governor Rockefeller as an Outstanding West Virginian and was later recognized as an Ambassador for the Arts for the State of West Virginia by Secretary of State A. James Manchin. Smith currently lives in Charleston with his wife and daughter and is serving his third term on the Charleston city council.
