Aberdeenshire Council's Inspiring Aberdeenshire Awards 2016: the highlights
Inspiring Aberdeenshire took place this year at Haddo House on Friday, June 17, to celebrate the work of people – including council staff – who support their communities.
This year’s kind-hearted winners were selected from more than 160 nominees who worked tirelessly to support others, from young fundraisers to those helping communities during the flooding:
Inspiring Aberdeenshire 2016 winners:
Best of Banff & Buchan
George Ritchie: George teaches flute at Inverallochy School and encourages participation in local heritage events including the annual Temperance Walks at Christmas and on New Year’s Day.
Best of Buchan
Martin Danzinger and Theatre Modo: The troup take a creative, ground-breaking approach by harnessing circus skills to help young people to improve their life chances, confidence and self-esteem while celebrating and creating the culture and community of the region.
Best of Formartine
Andrew Robertson: Pipe Major of Ellon Pipe Band for 30 years. Despite retiring, he still attends all events and supports the band and earlier this week was awarded the British Empire Medal as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Best of Garioch
Fubar News: A Facebook group run by volunteers which worked to provide information during recent flooding with a 24hr service including updates on road conditions, accidents, blockages and even missing pets.
Best of Kincardine & Mearns
Joint winners were Fred Stewart and the Young at Heart Portlethen volunteers:
The Young at Heart volunteers provide a wonderful service to older members at the community centre every Wednesday, organising activities including armchair exercises, board games and just lending an ear to listen to reminiscences.
Fred is a local historian and has dedicated lots of time and enthusiasm to the local North Kincardine Public Art initiative with a map incorporating culture, heritage and cycle and walk routes.
Best of Marr
Ballater Charitable Chiels: A voluntary group that fundraise in Ballater for a range of good causes such as renovation of a bothy, children’s playpark, firework display, Christmas lights. The Chiels came into their own during the recent flooding on Deeside when they assisted with the evacuation.
The Doric Award
Inverallochy School: The school organises ‘Tak a Beat’ Doric Festival fortnight every year to celebrate Doric. In 2016 pupils researched long-lost phrases, speaking to members of their community and wrote Doric limericks. The bairns make catties tailies and paper shippies to sail and also learn bothy ballads as part of the event.
The Pupil Voice Award
Ethan Turnball, a Mackie Academy pupil: Ethan, 13, from Stonehaven raised over £10,000 for Clic Sargent.
Young Leader Award
Dale Sutherland: Dale was a key contributor of Young People’s Organising and Campaigning Group (YPOC) and as a looked after young person himself has been involved in supporting young people in similar situations. Dale is also an employee of Aberdeenshire Council in the ICT team and has used his technical skills to develop a ‘My Voice’ software system for young people, a system praised in a recent inspection of children’s services.
Outstanding Leader of the Year Award
Shelley Milne: Shelley set up and maintained Hope Floats Deeside, a community action Facebook page of great assistance during recent flooding.
The dust may just have settled after Inspiring Aberdeenshire 2016 but it’s never too early to think about next year!
Is there someone, or a group of people, in your workplace or community that would be worthy of an award next year? Who is a leader? Who has something to shout about?
Nominations will open later this year for the 2017 awards, so in the meantime, please consider if you know someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty in their job, or in the community, so you’re ready to put them forward.
