Haunted Britain: Hadleigh Castle, Hadleigh, Essex, England
A (mind) trip to Hadleigh Castle ruins, allegedly haunted by a lady in white.
.
In approximately 1215 Hubert de Burgh laid the foundations for what was to become Hadleigh Castle. It was further enlarged and extensively reinforced by Edward III during the 1360's/70's, for use as a personal retreat (being close to London). By 1544 its use had somewhat ebbed and the castle had fallen out of favour with its current owner. The estate began to be broken up, the lands sold off and the castle stone sold for re-purposing. By 1575 the castle had become a ruin.
.
Perched atop a hill of London clay, overlooking the Essex marshes and the wide mouth of the Thames Estuary, renders this location bleak, exposed, and temperamentally gusty. This particular summers night was no exception, and even with a mic windshield a lot of the sound was unusable. However I have gone through all of the video I shot, and anything interesting has been highlighted and/or remarked upon in this final edit.

Hadleigh Castle in the English county of Essex overlooks the Thames estuary from a ridge to the south of the town of Hadleigh. Built after 1215 during the reign of Henry III by Hubert de Burgh
John Constable visited Hadleigh Castle in 1814 and made a minute drawing of the castle. This he developed into a full-sized oil sketch in preparation for a finished painting, executed in 1829 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year. The sketch is currently displayed at the Tate Gallery, London,

Hadleigh is an ancient market town and civil parish in South Suffolk, East Anglia, situated, next to the River Brett, between the larger towns of Sudbury and Ipswich. The headquarters of Babergh District Council are located in the town, which at the 2011 census had a population of 8,253.
Guthrum, King of the Danes, is said to be buried in the grounds of St Mary's Church in the town. He was defeated by King Alfred at the battle of Edington in 878. Hadleigh received its market charter in 1252. In 1438 administration was passed from manorial control to trustees. The market was eventually sold to Babergh District Council in the late 20th century.
Hadleigh was one of the East Anglian towns that derived its prosperity from its wool and cloth industries. It has a 15th-century timber-framed Guildhall and many fine examples of timber and brick listed buildings, some with highly detailed 17th century plasterwork or pargeting. Most of these buildings can be found in the High Street, Angel Street, Benton Street and the immediately surrounding area.
The town has a total of 246 listed buildings. The Georgian East House, on George Street, has been designated a Grade II listed building since 26 April 1950. In March 2013 plans by Babergh District Council to redevelop the site and build houses on the land behind were withdrawn after strong local protest. The property was once used for a range of community events and activities. Opponents of the plan had argued that the adjacent land had been used as a village green for the last 20 years.
The annual Hadleigh Show, first held in 1840 and also known as 'the May Show', is one of the oldest one-day agricultural shows in East Anglia. Organised by the Hadleigh Farmers' Agricultural Association, the show enjoyed 12,500 visitors in 2013. Benton End House, a Grade II* listed building on Benton Street, was originally a large medieval farmhouse. From 1940 it was the home of Sir Cedric Morris, artist and plantsman, who formed the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing there.
The Ansell Community Centre was set up in 2004 as a charity with the object of providing community facilities for the people of Hadleigh and surrounding area. Hadleigh has a Non-League football club Hadleigh United F.C. who play at Millfield.

The barbican and two striking drum towers – one later used by Georgian revenue men looking out for smugglers – are part of Edward's substantial building works during the 1360s.

Hey all, I recently joined the English Heritage which is an amazing society that is dedicated to keeping these wonderful historic locations open and available for people to visit.
In 1215 King John gave this area of land, known as the manor of Hadleigh, along with many other gifts, to Hubert de Burgh, his chief minister or justiciar.
Hubert was a trusted follower of the king, and was the custodian of two important royal castles at Windsor and Dover. At Dover he was soon to prove his great military skill by successfully defending the castle during a fierce siege in 1216.
Effectively ruler of England during young Henry III's childhood, Hubert built this large turreted castle as a statement of his power. His successful career came to an end after quarrels with the king, and he was forced to return his lands, including Hadleigh in 1239.
The castle remained in royal hands, but it was not until the time of Edward II, nearly 100 years later, that the king began to use the castle as a royal residence.
